Best restaurant in the neighborhood! Great for a date, or get the to-go for sitting on yer duff at home. Nice atmoshpere, great prices for the amount of food. Um, and it's probably one of the best Dominican food places in Boston. Yep!

I have friends who work here. So i am jaded. But aside from that. There are some very good folks there who try very hard to create a great garden center.
It's pricey, no joke, but there is plenty of stuff worth the cost. Little plants, quality products, starts, etc.
Plus they always carry my fave mulch. (unless they run out at the end of the season, which is fine because they at least sell mulch when Home Depot has already seasonally switched to the time of year that they stop selling mulch - which I do not understand - some people want to buy mulch in October).
So anyways, they sell local veggies, have hay-rides around the property sometimes, and just lots of great products, from soda to maple syrup. I can't complain. I love driving out there. There's this huge mansion on Allandale Road and it has gas-lanterns at the head of it's front entrance. Romance!

I decided it's only fair to give these guys a 3 stars on being a cool bar. It gets crowded and a little erratic, but that's my main beef with the bar. And speaking of the bar, the bar upstairs, meaning the structure, the part the dranks are placed on, is super cool.

So, this is no place to go to for brunch. Again, I can't stand being seated in the worst spot when there are other better options, and that totally happened here. It was weird, I'm always dumbfounded by hostesses that seem to care so little about your experience. Hostesses of the world remember, you are the first person the customer interacts with, try your best to make them feel good about coming into your damn restaurant!!

So we didn't even bother to get food, because after a fine mix of bad seating, rude staff and a failing to do her job well waitress... it's 3 strikes you're out, or at least we were out... of there... fast. We decided to spend our money at a restaurant where they seemed to want to earn the money.

But part of me doesn't blame the staff for our desire to leave. Truth be told, who the hell wants to work a beautiful sunny Saturday morning in a dungeon with little babies all around you. The South Ender baby-makers don't even know if it's day or night, which is why having brunch in a basement doesn't bother them. But I'm sure it takes its toll on the staff.

I will from now on only go the Beehive for drinks... at night.
We went to Pop's and had a great breakfast.

I just spoke to Chris at Pemberton farms, and Chris knew his shit about the plants in the garden center. Now that I have the number, I'm siked to use it. He was able to know what I was asking, but threw in some other useful info as well, including his own personal observations about different plants and the details on what's for sale at what prices. I felt like he understood what kind of customer I was, and spoke to me in that manner. Meaning, he's smart. He had a total townie accent, so don't let that mislead you. I don't, but I'm not sure if other people don't.

SIDENOTE:
And related to townie accents... in Ohio (where I am from), sometimes a townie accent means country, which might mean a more isolated experience, which could mean... more ignorance, not less intelligence, but just a point of view based in being exposed to less. But I've noticed that the townies of Greater Boston are some of the smartest, well-informed, and wittiest folks I've ever met as a large group of "local regulars".
So what Boston townies are grumpy! (Chris wasn't, he was quite neutral). But maybe it's because they're smart enough to be upset. Ignorance is Bliss.

Time to Yelp the garden centers!!!

So I'm a food lover and professional gardener. I was on Pemberton's website today to get some pricing information on their products, for a garden gig I have. The whole site was dedicated to the market!!! Okay guys, I know you make lots of money with your fancy stuff, but some people do buy your plants. Granted I'm not there a lot... I only have a few customers in Cambridge. And I've ever been annoyed with bad customer service from the garden staff, which I actually figured was just stress. This area is one of the most hoity-toity parts of Cambridge. I can only imagine the old bitties who make the garden staff haul stuff all over the place for them, so they can take it back home and have it hauled out the car by some subservient gardener who is hired to create some cheesy and perfect looking garden beds.

So, cool hippy punks are not what they are used to.

But I've had some fine times there, where the staff and I share a few words and a smile. I expect that from garden center staff, I like them to be nice and talk with you... you're buying plants after-all, plants are special.

Well, I will say I don't know if they have the mulch I need. I think I'll call right now and see how nice they are on the phone...

This is funny already. The only phone # on the website is for their food-gift ordering part of the biz. The lady was like, "you'll have to call the garden center". I say, "I'm sorry, this was the only phone number on the website". She's replies "I know". I wonder how many calls she gets that aren't for her. Anyways, if you have a gardening question for Pemberton Farms, here's the number... 617-491-2244.

Woof, that guy sounded busy, he's instructing staff "go get the wheelbarrow!" while on the phone with me. He was little short, I guess he was busy. They do have the mulch I want, I think. I asked for Old Dark Bark from the Coast of Maine mulch company. He said they have Dark Bark, but not Old Dark Bark. $5.99 a bag. He ended conversation politely and with a Thank-you, which of course makes up for him being a little short with me. You can be a little rude with me... just as long as you wrap it in a pretty bow.

Well kids, that's Pemberton's garden center for you. As far the market goes... I get the pre-made samwiches and interesting drinks. They have all sorts of alternative drinks to enjoy. I don't like cane syrup or lots of sweetness. It does seem expensive, but that's the neighborhood for you.

Oh, and I also like to hit their perennial plant sale in the fall.

Like Boy George stated so plainly... "Do you really want to hurt me, Do you really want to make me cry"? I didn't cry, but I did get upset. Mostly because my enchantment with Pops vanished. Poof. Maybe he was a new waiter?
Anyways... they did my other pet peeve. When I hand my plate to the waiter or waitress, to have it packed up to-go, I want everything on the plate. Now, if you threw away the bread, I wouldn't care. Often restaurants do, and sometimes, they give you fresh bread to take home. But that's not what got thrown away.
I ordered a fancy salad, and small salads came with the two meals that were ordered. My dad didn't eat his salad, and I didn't finish all the the salad I had ordered. So when I got my plate ready to have it packed up, I consolidated all 3 salads into one super yummy to-go pile of dressed lettuce and things. Yum Yum, I love salad when it gets a little old. That's me. Not everyone feels the same way, but I have met people who do.
I get my meal back... no salad!? Just my sandwich. I was like "where's the salad"? The kid is like, "oh it's dressed and gets soggy and I always throw it out". What happened to asking someone if they want their soggy salad? He acted like I was a crazy woman for wanting it, because no sane person would eat that stuff!
So I ask for what I've lost. He knew that it was a big ole' salad... it was my dad's little salad along with my big one. Guy brings back the tiniest salad, as if to rub the request in my face, and continue his sense of pride, because he's absolutely right that noone wants pre-dressed salad to-go.
I look at it. I'm angry now. There's no sense of apology in this particular interaction. It's insulting. But he does not know, I don't pay people to be insulted and not get the food I want. I go to manager on the floor, and say, "Hi, the salad that I wanted to-go was thrown away and it was bigger than this. I would like more salad if that's alright". And she got me a bunch more salad. But, probably did it knowing that it costs the restaurant nothing to do this. But upsetting customers, does cost the restaurant something, it costs them probable respect.
So, dumb waiter, you risked how I might feel about the service at Pops for your own sense of rightousness. Again, you are "not a nice guy", and I hope your job there is not tainting my love of Pops for very long. Sorry to be so mean.

I think I have a big ole' crush on Pops. I mean, it may be a little early in our relationship for me to be saying that, but just like, every time me and Pops hang out, I just feel so good.

Our waiter asked me how I like my eggs, and I said "soft scramble", and they came out just perfect. Eggs cooked just how I asked them to be, always earns big points. I felt special. My friends enjoyed their food as much as I. And the Bloody Mary I ordered, wasn't too strong, wasn't too light, and exactly what I wanted after being so  pissed with my experience at the Beehive.

I've never had a bad time yet. I could be falling in lurv, but I'm too scared to say it. I love the garden in the back. I like the decor. I enjoy the staff. And the menu is pretty exciting and seasonal.

Doubletree Boston

Neighborhood: Chinatown

Looking for a low-cost hotel right in the heart of Bostontowne was the first challenge. And pretty much, this place is not low-cost. But amongst the more fairly priced establishments, the Double-Tree seemed to have some nice amenities plus location.

Now, when they say valet parking is $36 and "self-parking" is $0... that means you can find a meter or another parking garage. If you don't need your car, maybe take a taxi or the Orange Line to the New England Medical stop... but the T is right there, so you don't have to lug your stuff too far.

We were greeted in the front with the smell of fresh baked cookies. There were baskets of fresh baked cookies. Even after check-in, we were handed these packaged disks, which looked liked... Roomkeys? Shaving kit? Coffee?... No, they were fresh baked cookies, handed to us as nonchalantly as if every hotel gives you fresh baked cookies. We held them close, and lo, they were warm.

Then off to the room! Our bed was made of clouds. There were at least five giant pillows per person... no asking for more, you'd seem crazy to need more. "Sweet Dreams". That was embroidered on the premier pillow. The bed was expansive enough to fit Snow White and all of her little friends.

One interesting note, apparently Emerson students are also enjoying pillows that are not hand-me-downs or bought from Target. Emerson is using part of the hotel as supplementary student housing. You can smoke cigs with them out on the roof deck, next to the jogging track on the 2nd floor.

Just beyond this jogging track is the elevator that hotel guests can take to the YMCA gym and pool amenities. We enjoyed the Jacuzzi while watching the multi-gen, bathing-capped residents of the neighborhood bob around.

Oh! The main reason we stayed at the Double-Tree was for the "Sleep-in Package", for no cost more than the regular stay, according to the internet. Which meant that check-out was at 3pm and not the regular noon check-out. Which makes the whole idea of being at a hotel SO MUCH MORE WORTH IT. Now, the check-out for the valet is 2pm, so don't let them charge you an extra $9, just because you stayed one more hour, and they neglected to tell you the about the valet check-out time.

And during our "sleep-in time", we did hit the Jacuzzi some more and bought some pork buns in Chinatown. We like to enjoy our hotel stay!

Cookies, Clouds, Chinatown... can't beat it.

Apple Store

(don't use the stairs, more on that, after this)

Well, I should've known. I know how capitalism works, how did I forget for a second?

So I have Powerbook G4, and it had a tiny amount of juice spill on it that definitely got into the display and shorted it out. But. I had a feeling that the computer (motherboard) was fine. I go to the Apple store to have it looked at and possibly repaired. I'm told they don't do repairs there, it has to be sent to Texas. Texas? These guys are clearly not members of the Think Global, Act Local gang. Texas is far away from Boston, and you'd think there would be someplace in New England to send it!? Regardless. I say "Really?" and then ask " How much does this cost".

A BLANKET REPLY IS ABOUT TO BE GIVEN TO ME, although it doesn't seem that way at first.

After several minutes of him searching his computer in order to give me an answer, I finally get one.

"$1,140".

I picked up my computer and said thanks and walked away. I called my computer tech friend, who later opened it and inspected the damage, turned it on using an external monitor, and then ran a hardware test. The computer is fine; the monitor is not. I'm using my Powerbook right now, with an external monitor.  Okay, now the cost Apple quoted me, was the cost of a new Powerbook G4. If there's one sitting in a warehouse somewhere and someone wants to buy it, it costs $1,140. So I guess they were just going to get all my stuff off the damaged computer and load it onto a new one and sell it to me as a "repaired computer". When in reality, I can get the monitor fixed for less. The quote I just got from the Computer Loft in Allston is $750, and from Orramac in Watertown, the repair will cost  $500-600. I asked about used monitors, and they both said if I find one, they will install it for $150.  So I went onto the computer to find out the costs of a display from http://www.macrecyclin...... $300-425. On Ebay, if I search for parts/repair, I can find a broken machine with a screen that works for much less than that.

So for $200-575, depending on my efforts, I can get my computer fixed.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST!!!!
THE STAIRS

If you have ever had any moment of vertigo in your life, or even have the tiniest amount of fear of heights, or if safety is just plain important to you... DON'T TAKE THE STAIRS! They are fucking scary and I don't know who thought they were okay. THEY ARE GLASS STAIRS. They are the last place I would want to be if a fire was nearby. There are so many reasons why. First, people scared of the stairs will go slowly, then other people will push them out of the way. They are slippery, so if sprinklers went off, so many people would fly all over the place. Glass conducts heat. And worst of all, they go around in a circle, which only makes you kinda dizzy. I hate Apple now.

They don't care about me, the computer owner, an Apple computer user since 1983. They only care about looking cool and selling stuff - as much as they possibly can. That god-damn egotistical Steve Jobs (who I seriously love/hate forever).

City Farm Greenhouse and Nursery

This is my favorite garden center in the UNIVERSE. There is so much love I have for this place. I can't believe I am lucky enough to have found it. No place compares. Love Love Love Love.

It's owned by an extended Italian family. Giuseppe, the main guy, is my hero. He's fucking cool, nice, smart, funny and full of life. Plus, everyone else is very nice, esp. the granddaughter, she thinks I'm funny. Which is good, because I am.

But you may be thinking, what makes this place so great, other than Giuseppe? Well, simply stated, it's the best garden center in Boston. They have all the basic plants at a great price. This is important because I say... screw those fancy tomatoes, where you'll be lucky to get a few fruits. And screw those exotic perennials, the ones the yuppies just "have to have it". I want a classic European garden, with flowers, herbs, food planted amongst pretty bushes and trees. I don't need over-priced pizzazz. City Farm is real gardener's garden center.

Oh and I haven't even told you the best part yet. My lord, it's my sanctuary, their greenhouse. You've never seen anything like it, or smelled anything like it. I swear it's not only good for your lungs, but being in it is like environmental therapy. I joke with them all the time, saying they should rent it out to a massage therapist to work in. It's so beautiful, and everything is so alive. There are plants that are 20-30 years old that will blow your mind. There are bonsai's and water features. There are baby plants, and flowering plants, and clover and ferns growing all over the ground. I just bask in the wonder and joy of their greenhouse.

Everytime I go there, I get a little happier, more relaxed and okay with life.

I have yet to take advantage of their florist service. I actually like to go to Cobwebs, the antique store that sells flowers, which is located on Centre St. in JP. I go there every time I'm invited to a b-day or wedding and need a gift!

Because I love Lionette's so much, I can't help but think that Plum and the Butcher Shop are trying to copy them and take their business. They are both owned by the #9 group, which owns several restaurants in town. Whereas Lionette's is owned by a pair of brothers. Plum Produce's stuff isn't that great either, it's just "perfect looking stuff". I'm someone who gardens and shops at farmer's markets... I know that perfect looking produce is a fantasy. The best fruits and veggies often look imperfect. Like tiny peaches that are so so sweet. Or tomatoes with huge fissures, but the inside is solid yummy tomato with few seeds. So the look of their perfect produce is a turn-off. Looks like aliens farmed it. Or robots. Or robot aliens. I've never eaten anything from there because I'm scared of its sterility.

The staff was mellow and laid back. I like more exuberance from staff, but at least they weren't rude or freaky. The selection is out of this world. If you like to cook and eat, go to this store. It'll blow your little cooking/eating mind. Dried mushrooms of all sorts. Dried teas of all sorts. Dried everything of all sorts. Flavored salt. Spice mixes. Various containers to put your things in. On and on and on in spice heaven. They earn the Prestigious Fluffy Tree Award.

Yet, according to other reviewers, be cautious of bugs. But hey, that sh*t happens.
