Tick Tock Diner

Slightly more expensive than a diner should be, but it's convenient. Before the movie earlier this week, C. and I went here for a quick dinner. She got the chicken soup, which was pleasant if not overly flavorful. And I got a grilled cheese. The grilled cheese came with a pickle and small cup of cole slaw -- no fries -- and still cost more than $5. Regardless, the grilled cheese was tasty and well prepared. Good for a one-two punch with the 34th Street AMC.

I might like this better than the slightly larger AMC on 42nd Street! It's slightly out of the way, of a more moderate size, and therefore a slightly better movie-going experience. That said, it does show only first-run mainstream movies, really, and the tickets now cost $12.50 a piece. Thank goodness for my AMC gold tickets. Didn't get any snacks or soda because the line was quite long, so I can't comment on the concessions.

We had a good dinner here a couple of weekends ago. Nothing fancy, just a couple of cheeseburgers, some fries, and drinks. The burgers were good -- not amazing, but good -- and the meal was fine. Nothing fancy, but convenient and decent.

My son wanted waffles for breakfast during a recent visit, so we went to IHOP. He ended up getting the Junior Rooty, but I got a Belgian waffle. Both were great. If you can, skip getting juice if you're thirsty. They now sell pints of fresh-squeezed OJ for $2.99 -- with free refills. That seems like a good deal, but you don't really need a pint of OJ, much less a refill. The coffee is much more reasonably priced. $2.29 gets you a pot.

They'll have moved to their new location by now, but my son and I stopped by a couple of weekends ago. I was generally impressed by their selection of new books and graphic novels, but I was particularly pleased by their long boxes on the floor -- $1 a comic, which is a bit pricey for a budget bin, but theirs are organized by character, if not by title -- and their sale shelves of graphic novels.

We picked up several important arcs in trade paperback -- Dark Phoenix, Trial of Galactus, etc. -- for half price. Not sure I would have bought the books otherwise, but this is a great deal for those books.

Worth checking out if not just for the sales rack.

Golden Hair Salon & Barber Shop

The site of my most recent haircut. After a political protest and rally near the UN, I was walking down Second Avenue when I walked past this place. I think the cut was about $10, and the barber wasn't too chatty -- but it was hella better than my last haircut in Greenpoint, and I'd go again. The cut's growing out well, too.

They do "all kinds of mens haircut," and they also repair watches, change batteries, and do other watch stuff. They might also sell men's shoes, which isn't uncommon for these places -- not entirely understandable, but not uncommon.

I'd get my hair cut there again.

Awesome. A great old-style family restaurant with some wonderfully kitschy interior and exterior design elements. The food is basic and good. I had the fried chicken, and I think C. had something less fried... perhaps there was broccoli involved. The food wasn't amazing, but it wasn't bad. And the price is reasonable. Not sure if I'll become a regular, but if I'm in the mood for fried chicken and some ambience, it's on my short list.

A very impressive used bookstore in a little shopping center that's a little maze-y. But seek it out. The proprietor is very nice, their selection is wide ranging, and their science fiction paperback selection is especially impressive. Their sf books run an entire side of an aisle, and while there recently, I picked up several books, all for about $1 a pop. If you're into sf books, start here to see what they have. I'll be back!

C. and I ate here before a show last weekend. It's a small, but solid Italian eatery. Not overly crowded for a somewhat early dinner on a rainy evening, but there was at least one other couple there. C. got the gnocchi in butter herb sauce, and I got the penne with red sauce. Both dishes were very, very good. Their red sauce is fresh and delicious.

We also got dessert, C. the tiramisu, which was OK, and I a lemon ice, which was fine. Not too impressed by the non-entree items, but I'd eat here again in a minute. Good to know about, as it's just outside my usual stomping routes in Long Island City.

This is a convenience store located in a rest stop along I-87. I bought two postcards here after a weekend camping in the Catskills, and the prices were quite reasonable. They even had several card options that had pictures of actual places in the region.

Otherwise, they had your usual mix of candy, sundries, magazines, and other items. The rest stop in general has food, restrooms, etc., as well. Not a bad rest stop.
