Careful: A couple of drinks with your good-enough brunch, and you'll be out $50.

I'd been here for a great brunch before, but finally tried it for a last-minute birthday dinner as a foursome on a Saturday night around 9. Even with a reservation (called in around 7), there was a wait, but the manager was very apologetic about it. We opted to sit inside and enjoy the clean, blonde-wood-addled country kitchen vibe, complete with framed kids' drawings on the wall.

Our waiter, while desperately in need of a haircut, was very friendly and spent time with us on the wine list, eventually recommending a bottle that turned out to be really wonderful. And with the restaurant's dedication to local, organic ingredients, it's no surprise the food is awesome. Here's what we feasted on: bread with excellent pate (and French butter and some kind of paprika spread, but the pate was the thing), cheese plate (very good), and beet salad with goat cheese fondue for the apps. The BF had the special entree, a $30 ribeye that should have melted in his mouth but didn't: a little disappointing. And kind of a small portion. So that's where I'm subtracting a star. But my scallops were, as the waiter had promised, "gorgeous." So buttery and wonderful. And they came on top of a thick, spicy carrot puree that was really good, and covered in pea shoots and pickled cipollinis (sort of an onion thing) that I shoveled in enthusiastically, too. Our companions liked their risotto and sturgeon, but I think I got the best meal. I was in heaven. Seriously, get the scallops.

When it came time for dessert, we were all bummed to hear they'd run out of the chocolate souffl, and the rest of the desserts were a bit nonplussing: grapefruit cake and avocado ice cream (?!) for instance. But I got the strawberry rhubarb sorbet (note: not a hint of rhubarb; boo) and we convinced the birthday boy to share the grapefruit cake a la mode so we could have the kitchen put a candle in it and sing to him. Surprisingly enough, the cake was a hit. Even the usually dessert-hating BF was digging in.

We left with our wallets considerably lighter but happy as clams.

Don't eat here. Get a cupcake to go, but don't eat here. I had probably the worst huevos rancheros ever here -- the eggs were totally overcooked, no runniness whatsoever, and the amount of black beans was pitifully small. My friend said her salad was good but I could tell the lettuce wasn't even fresh. And the service was slooooow. Don't bother.

Here's a review: I got my dress at the Bridal Garden. And isn't that basically all you need to know? I'll go on: Didn't find it overwhelming at all -- it's organized very thoughtfully, so once they explain the system, if you know what you want, you know right where to start. And it's a manageable size. I tried on a bunch of interesting dresses, none of which were quite right, and then the very helpful saleswoman, Corinne, asked me if I was "up for fun" (well, yes!) and brought out a dress she loved, this gorgeous, whimsical, PERFECT Anne Barge dress. It was a trunk-show sample and fit me like a glove. At about $1000, it was about 65% off = a great price. And I'd be supporting a charity for NYC kids instead of the money-grubbing wedding industry? I put it on hold for a nonrefundable $100 deposit (which turns into a donation if you decide not to get the dress) and came back the next week to get it. Now I have a wedding dress hanging in my closet. Yay! Sure, I'll have to get it hemmed and cleaned (though there no stains or anything, just a little surface dirt on the straps), but I'll deal. Anyone wanna recommend a tailor/cleaner?

I went here for a private party, which is the only way I'd ever want to go. It wasn't an open bar, unfortunately, so we only got to sample two sugary cocktails: a watermelon margarita and a pineapple mojitos -- for a holiday party? Out of season much? And they ran out of wineglasses within 10 minutes of the party starting, serving refills in plastic cups. Not very classy. The space is pretty enough but ridiculously small. I have no clue what it'd be like on a regular Wednesday night, but I'm not about to navigate a velvet rope for the privilege of paying $25 a drink to find out. There are plenty of other cocktail bars in the city I'd rather frequent.

In this order: Helpful, charming-yet-gruff waiter; truly mouthwatering beef skewers and pho; lovely, sweet condensed-milk coffee. A nice, easy, casual, delicious, and cheap dinner when you're down Chinatown way.

I finally made it to the Jakewalk! Cute little wine bar with great cheeses and wines, including a $5 glass of pretty good Montepulciano. Can you beat that? I submit that you cannot. Next time (and there will be one) I'm getting the fondue for two.

The ONLY thing wrong with this place is the almost comical number of people who will crush into the small space, clustering near the door in the hope of eventually snagging a table. The red wine was mostly delicious (save for one shitty Portuguese glass), the service very good (the bartender/host offered our party of three a nice corner table even after we'd said we wouldn't mind keeping our seats at the bar to eat), and the food delectable. Two words: pig's ass. That's some sandwich. Just get there early (or late). The people started piling in after 6:30. Also, I approved of the unexpected (read: weird) music mix, which included Amy Winehouse and Guns 'n' Roses.

This place gets a "pretty all right" from me. Our sever was friendly and funny (though I'm not sure a waiter should ever address a patron as "buddy") and very helpful in getting us two rounds of $3 happy-hour Hoffbraus before the 8 pm cutoff time. The menu is pretty heavy, in general, but I went for a healthy-seeming quinoa salad with grilled paprika shrimp, grilled veggies, and greens, and I was really happy with it. It was probably better than the lackluster ghoulash my brother got and even the juicy cheeseburger the BF got. The decor is nothing to write home about, and it's weirdly cold in there, temperature-wise. Bring a sweater and an appetite, and you should be all good.

If you, like the boyfriend, fear a giant, loud, overdone SEA-esque eatery, fear not. We came here for a family dinner and the food was really good. 'Specially the apps/small plates: we can definitely vouch for the dumplings, braised pork, and calamari. I had the country curry soup with tofu, which was yums; boyfriend declared his massaman curry one of the best he's had in recent memory or some such superlative. And they brought us free beer (or wine) -- unlimited -- because they don't yet have a liquor license. Server was uncommonly nice, let us take forever to order and didn't try to rush us out even though the place was filling up and we were hogging three tables between us. The decor is clean and modern and pleasing, the music isn't too loud (except in the bathrooms, which may make you think you're in a club circa 1999), and the prices are very reasonable (meeting my dad's request of an "economical" spot). My new go-to Union Square restaurant!
