The Yellow Leaf Cupcake Co.

Bonus points for not sucking as badly as Trophy or Royale. Also, their flavors are creative -- and they actually put a dollop of Nutella inside the Hazelnut cupcake and a dollop of apple goop inside the Apple Turnover cupcake. I tasted those two, plus vanilla/chocolate and orange.

The cake portion is great. The right texture and moisture level, and no weird aftertaste. The frosting I was not a fan of. If I wanted to eat the equivalent of a room-temperature half stick of butter, I wouldn't need a cupcake to do that. I guess I prefer frostings that are stiffer, with less butter, and maybe more sugar.

And I was a bit disappointed that the cupcakes' flavors weren't more intense, neither in the cake nor the frosting (though I would settle for just one of those).

My previous review still stands but I'm lowering my rating a bit due to a few minor complaints. The hallway carpets look faded and sad, and there's a stain outside the garbage room that they tried and failed to remove. Also, due to people not rinsing out their glass before recycling, the plastic bin is super smelly and I asked them to rinse it out, but no progress yet. The pool cues in the billiards room have worn out tips, so you can't even use them. And just as a personal preference, the beige walls in the public areas are rather boring and the elevator upholstery looks like something only a grandmother could love.

Edit: Within 2 weeks of my most recent review, they have fixed the carpet stain and pool cues. They are quite receptive of feedback. :)

This place is a hidden gem in the middle of downtown. While not inexpensive, it is fairly affordable if you have someone to split the rent with (and if you can do without a view). It's got a nice exercise room, a pool and hot tub, sauna, billiards room (possibly converted to an "entertainment room" in the future), a lounge good for parties (has kitchen), and an 8th floor terrace with 3 grills, a dog park, and a cute little fountain. The building is fairly new, so the apartments are nice. I've only lived here a few months but the only complaint was a temperamental thermostat in the apartment, but I got them to get us a new one. The building has a concierge, but I haven't found any good use for him. We also have a security person at night, and the doors are locked at night and sometimes during the day. If you decide to live here, please let me know, as we get a bonus for referring new tenants.

Tasty and filling. Four courses that included several foraged items and things I've never even heard of before, much less eaten. I'm a fairly picky eater and not much of a hippie despite being vegetarian, but if you can get past the set menu idea and the hippieness of this place, you'll be treated to 4 courses that have had quite a bit of thought and effort put into them. The menu changes, but here's what we had: sesame sunchoke appetizer, wild foraged miner's lettuce salad, pecan cheese and cauliflower lasagna main course (yum), and Theo Chocolate truffle dessert. (The one major downside, all four of us who ate here had digestive issues afterwards.)

Eaten here twice, first time as part of that 30 for 30 thing. They have a decent selection of vegetarian-friendly items, but overall the food is not that great, too small, and too pricey. The apple (currently pear) and cheese salad was good. I love tomato soup, but theirs is just not good. Some tapas are nearly impossible to share, such as the mini crab tower and the potato croquettes (there are only two). There are far better restaurants in the area (almost any Tom Douglas place), so don't bother coming here.

They know how to make rice right, unlike In The Bowl. Great faux sesame beef.  The faux orange chicken was quite good, though not really chicken texture. Both dishes could have used more veggies (and maybe less actual orange pieces in the orange chicken). It feels rather middle of nowhere and the decor is nothing to brag about.

This is the furthest grocery store I could go to, and instead of walking to Whole Foods (WF) or driving half the distance to QFC, I even go an extra block past Madison Market to get here. Street parking is limited in this neighborhood and yes, the parking garage is slightly traumatizing, but your best bet for a spot after noon is from 2pm-4pm M-F.

I think the store is laid out backwards and you have to do a bit of backtracking to keep all your cold items till the end. The store is certainly small compared to QFC or WF, but it also means I can get 2-weeks' worth of food for 2 people in 30 minutes. Yes, a majority of the items are TJ's own brand, but they're good quality and certainly more affordable than WF.

 Update - 2/4/2009
If you want Dahlia-quality food without the high expense of dinner here, I recommend brunch (haven't lunched here yet). Sure, the glass of (good) OJ is $4, but let's ignore that for now. We came here on a Saturday and had the grilled cheese with tomato soup, and the two eggs your way (might I recommend scrambled?) with smashed potatoes (heavenly), your choice of meat, some wilted greenery, and a lovely buttermilk biscuit with jam. And by lovely I mean "I would like another please". A+ dishes all the way. So we came back again the very next day for brunch to swap the 2 dishes. And ignoring the fullness of our bellies we took home a bag of sweet hot donuts.

I should come here more often, but I don't want to go broke. I had salmon this time, which was good, but they only cooked the outside which I'm sure was on purpose but not my style. My boyfriend had carrot-something ravioli and it was delicious. It seems like they have expanded their dessert menu since I was last here, so I had the apricot tart with ginger ice cream. It was unique and yummy. I'm tempted to give them an extra star for their table bread not being sourdough.

Five stars for the meal I had (halibut), four stars for the overall menu. As the website says, their menu does change daily, which is unfortunate for picky eaters and people who don't like surprises. My halibut came with potatoes and chanterelle mushrooms, with some other edible things thrown in. And it was worth every damn penny. I highly recommend sitting at the bar while eating your meal. You probbaly won't have to wait nearly as long for a table, plus your "waiter" (aka the bartender) is never more than 10 feet away. Nothing else on the menu appealed to me, but then again, I'm a picky eater.

Brunch time. Great quiche (red pepper, fennel, chevre) -- fluffy and rich. The cured salmon thingie was good too. Also had the baguette with butter, honey, and jam. Zero complaints. Well, except that they had nothing chocolatey for dessert.

Free: pizza, ice cream, booze for my guests, and a navy blue elite tshirt to go with my navy blue elite hoodie. What's not to love? (Also, snagging a table right in front of the pizzas...priceless.)

This place lives in the shadow on Dahlia Lounge, literally, figuratively. I can sum up my feelings by saying the food is good, but I don't plan on coming back, unless it's just for appetizers and dessert. The spreads with pita are pretty good. We had the Skordalia garlic, the red pepper, and the Kalamata-fig -- 5 stars for making me like something with olives in it. The pita was just average. The Black Cod was a tiny portion (probably because it was a special smaller portion size for the 3-course Dine Around Seattle thing) and good but boring. I should have taken a photo, it was so laughably tiny. I had high expectations of the smashed garlic fried potatoes (more like one giant potato blob), but I should have known better -- I've never liked the potatoes at a Greek restaurant. The roasted mushroom side dish was good -- every time I eat at a Tom Douglas restaurant I temporarily stop hating mushrooms. The warm chocolate-cashew tart (with random pear wedge) was yummy. So...3.5 stars, rounded down for overall disappointment.
