Current Crushcarrot cake french toast from the South Congress Cafe in Austin, TX
Cute, quaint, reasonably priced and yummy! What more can you ask for? My son was especially enamored with the hen/rooster motif throughout (what is breakfast without a toddler squawking "cock-a-doodle-doo" at top volume?) and the complimentary Sanibel coloring book and crayons. The stuffed french toast isn't really "stuffed", but tasty just the same. All of the benedicts (they had several varieties - we sampled the Southern benedict with sausage gravy) come with olive eyes, and the coffee is top notch. Recommended!
After hearing so much about this place, we were really excited to give it a try. We split 4 appetizers - conch fritters (very frittery, not so much conch), conch chowder (spicy and delicious), peel and eat shrimp (fat and tasty), and a dozen oysters. The food was pretty good, but overly expensive for the bar atmosphere. Dark, dirty, dank interior with too loud TVs blaring Seinfeld did little to improve the experience. Overall, a little disappointed.
The sandwiches were yummy and inexpensive, and kids ate free! I had a bronzed mahi sandwich with sweet potato fries and Dan had a honey bbq chicken concoction on flatbread. The cashier was super-nice to a cranky Ayler and even came over to give him a toy. The interior was clean and modern with "Jack Handy"style posters everywhere, and the bathrooms were most impressive. Both men's and women's restrooms had changing tables, all immaculate with lots of space and even a place to strap your kid down if needed. Can you tell we'd had it with the tantrums? A nice alternative to fast food with swift, friendly service and reasonable prices.
"Everybody loves David's Bar-B Que"? Catchy jingle, but oh so wrong. This place gets the ultimate yuck - which magazine is it that gives the worst record review a shit sandwich? No matter - this place deserves one. And, appropriately, we had a very nasty diaper incident here (again, no changing tables, so we had to clean up in the trunk of the car) so even Ayler knows what's what.
Yum! I haven't yelped in months, but had to log on to give this place it's due. So good! I'd always avoided this place because a sub shop in an Albertson's plaza held such little appeal to me, but when a friend in Australia mentioned that this was one of the main things he missed about Gainesville, I thought I'd give it a shot... We went in on a weekend after being denied entry to the Beer Festival (thanks a lot, Ayler) and sampled a number of drafts (great selection) and two hot-pressed sandwiches. Everything about the sub was scrumptious - the bread, the meat (so lots!), the toppings, the garnish... There is even outdoor seating!
D'Lites is a specialty combo grocery / ice cream shop for diabetic and low-carb needs. Thank you thank you thank you! At last! My own pregnant, gestational diabetes, feeling-sorry-for-me self can now indulge in sugar-free, fat-free, low-carb soft serve ice cream in flavors like chocolate cheesecake, marshmallow, and peanut butter. And it's actually good! Yum! Not as good as the *real* stuff, but 100% better than any of the other sugarless varieties on the market. The staff is super-friendly, and on game days, you get free orange and blue sprinkles! The rest of their space caters to the diabetic sweet tooth with a variety of boxed and freezer items that lets you indulge guilt-free! YES!
I'm not usually a big fan of BBQ, but Adam's Rib (while also sporting a clever name for themselves) was delicious! When picking up my dry-cleaning at Rip's, the owner could not say enough good things about this place. He was so adamant, I decided to see for myself. The folks that work here did everything possible to make us comfortable - they were so nice, I'd come back just for them. I think this place used to be a Dunkin' Donuts. The atmosphere isn't so great, but they do a good take-out business, and besides - you are there for the food! Tender, fall-from-the-bone chicken, authentic collard greens, yummy green beans and mac 'n cheese so cheesy, it'll string from your bowl to your fork. Original blends of BBQ and hot sauces on the counter. Treat yourself to their homemade banana pudding for a happy ending, BBQ-style. I can't wait to try their breakfast specials.
Mmm...pizza. I've had to cut down on my pizza intake of late, but we made an exception on game day to get out of town and try Blue Highway. How lovely! The waiter was incredibly attentive and the atmosphere was really warm and relaxed. D & I split an antipasti platter (with some of the best hummus I've had in a long time) and a build-it-yourself "perfecta trifecta" pie of garlic, (huge cut chunks of garlic are always a plus!) spinach, and mushrooms. A few complained of the cornmeal-style crust (nope, not like Zelda's) but I really enjoyed it. We'll be back!

The new Entertainment books are in and there are coupons galore! Usually a good way to try a new place for the first time - I'm glad we didn't pay full price to try this new-to-Gainesville New Orleans themed chain restaurant. The food *sounded* great on the menu, but was awful on the plate. Steer clear of the shrimp pizza bake - it's reminiscent of those soggy cracker pizzas you may remember from elementary school. It was literally disgusting. Uninspired beans and rice, bland gumbo, and expensive beer prices abound. And the service? Abysmal. Boo! Harry's downtown is a better bet for this style all around.
Disappointing. I love me some pizza, but I generally prefer it to be made to order. They have tons of pre-made slices that they re-heat a la Leo's. Not wanting this option, we ordered a small pizza, a pasta side dish and a some garlic rolls - just to sample it all. Eh. Not bad, just not great. Awful, school-cafeteria-style lighting and ambiance, and flavors that underwhelm. Their radio spot is pretty catchy, though!
