Alice's Tea Cup

Categories: Desserts, Tea Rooms

This might be a cute place for a girls' brunch date, but only if you all agree to wear pink frilly dresses (or at least put on the fairy wings provided inside). The decor was cute, the food was cute, the bathroom was cute, the entire thing was, well, cute. But beyond that, it's a long wait, our meal is nothing spectacular, and the tea was underwhelming and overpriced (sorry, tea snob).

That being said, you do have to come here once just to experience it, and then maybe wait to be invited back for someone's very cute and adorable baby shower.

I love interesting concepts that do well here, because they prove that people here appreciate the unique and the innovative, and they reinforce the fact that New York is as innovative and quirky as ever.

The cupcakes here are cute and half-bite sized. Each of them is constructed with individual care and attention. What's more, the presentation is so gorgeous that they'll cutesify any dinner or party table.

PS - my absolute favorite is the peanut butter and jelly!

Celeste Restaurant

An absolute treasure trove of a restaurant. I love that most of the city outside of UWS has no idea of its existence. Celeste epitomizes the kind of restaurant you think of when referring fondly to a "neighborhood" restaurant.
- Cozy and warm atmosphere with its brick oven and wooden decor,
- Italian food that is consistently delicious and bursting with fresh ingredients,
- Local crowd there to relax and wind down from a busy week.

love it.

B's Bikes

I had a specific brand/model/color bike in mind, and was waiting several months to find the perfect one. After contacting Brendan, the owner from B's Bikes, and learning that there's one that fits my nit-picky requirements, I raced downtown, across the L, and into Brooklyn to check it out.

I loved it, but it had to be perfect and therefore I wanted to change the wheels, the handlebars, the seat, the locks, the kick stand, etc etc. Ethan paitently listened to all my demands, spent over an hour making adjustments, and then spent probably another half hour answering my questions - "what does this do?" "why do i need that?" "how do i move this?" "am i insane?"

It's pretty much a fact - 1) I am a little bit neurotic, 2) B's Bikes is all kinds of wonderful.

Landmarc is simple, and it's good. The combination is enough for me to be sure I'll be there again sometime soon.

My friend and I went in without reservations on a Sunday night, and got a table right next to the glass - great view! The place was big, dimly lit, bustling with upbeat activity. The menu was simple - nothing over the top. We had a leek and shrimp risotto, mussels and fries. Both were within expectations, although nothing spectacular. It's definitely the atmosphere here that tops off my 4-star rating.

A completely funky dive bar filled with clientele who probably got lost on their way to Williamsburg, bartenders who were completely laid-back, and a wall full of cartoony pop art that were at first cute until you realize you're looking at penises and big orgies.

A fun bar to have a drink to start off your night, but probably would not be a destination bar for me.

Max Cafe

Neighborhood: Morningside Heights

There are sofas, lounge chairs, with a great laid-back vibe. If the place was a little bigger, I could see Friends being shot here. It's a cute cafe that's fitting for its location near Columbia University.

But Max only gets 3 stars, because the food is so mediocre it's bad. Perhaps the owners felt that the comfy couches could make up for blah-food, but not for this die-hard foodie.

Pranna

I came here with about 30 people for a club event. The place was modern-chic, with an immediate perception of 'space' when you first enter - Pranna's huge! We were on the first floor, but it looked like there was several sections upstairs for smaller, more intimate parties.

Service was great. Food was just okay, but to be fair we had large orders of appetizers to share instead of ordering separate meals.

Overall, big and pretty but nothing unique to wow me. I can see this as fun place to host a party, but make sure not to show up in sweats.

Awesome coffee, now in a more accessible location

more details coming, I just HAD to be the first one to review this place :)

Update 4/18th:
Ok now that i've sucessfully beat Sam P.(http://www.yelp.com/bi...) in being the first to review, here's my actual review :)

Joe's is probably one of my favorite "independent" coffeeshops in the entire city. Their several locations in the village have become go-to spots for everyone who appreciates quality, personally-made cup of coffee.

Luckily for those of us living uptown, Joe just opened up this new UWS location. The space is rather small with only a few small tables for temporary parking (which is why I didn't give 5 stars), but the essence of Joe's is there. I had been impatiently waiting for their opening day (4/14th). When I walked in, the place was bustling  and had a great atmosphere. Jon Rubenstein (Joe's owner) was there, along with a few friends/family members, and despite his busy-ness, chatted with customers and asked for people's names. I've always believed that a business is a reflection of its owner, and at Joe's, this is no exception.

Most importantly, the quality of the coffee was amazing . The baristas were definitely trained well, and each cup was filled with great aroma followed by equally great taste. What's more, their selection of pastries was delicious, all delivered fresh from well-known local NYC bakeries (Sullivan St Bakery, etc.).

Get their punch card - you will be back.

Cheerful little cafe to do some reading and relaxing. Their list of teas is extensive, although in my opinion a bit on the expensive side ($4.50-$7.50 per pot). They have sandwiches and cakes there, although none that I've had is all that impressive. Come here for the cute and cozy vibe.
