BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse
Categories: American (Traditional), Breweries
Now I know why.
We had two beers there, the Nit Wit beer and the Lefe Blonde on tap--both excellent with really nice service.
This Cupertino location was also the venue for a friend's baby's first birthday party. They'd rented out the side room and BJ's really served us well: many kinds of deep dish pizza with great crusts, southwest style chicken salad with generous amounts of sliced chicken breast, ribs, broiled moist chicken, moist and flavorful salmon, and very good service.
Well done BJ's!

$6.95 for all you can eat decent food + dessert (How can you beat that?). Really great for a quick fix and alternative to ordinary fast food.
This place is reliable and consistent with a predicable good selection which changes little, if any. The music is the same CD (the same, the same, THE SAME) each time we go there--I think I've memorized all the tracks. This reflect the sameness of their food--except that their deserts can change from cookies to orange sections, to cream puffs (MMmmm), jello and ever ubiquetous almond agar agar.
Tea and soda and a desert are included. Only problems: they have a great fried fish that is always placed too near the door so it always is cold unless you can get it coming out of the kitchen. Skip the steamed Char Siu Bao dim sum and the pork (Siu Mai) dumplings.
They have a basic sushi roll (one flava) and wasabi and pickled ginger right at the desert section for some reason (prolly cause it needs to stay cold)
But if you know what you like and you don't expect much more, it's better than MacDonalds/Burger King for the same price! And the staff is nice there too!
We had stopped in for a mid day break and immediately determined that this place had better coffee than the vaunted Jailhouse cafe (for less) and had better breakfasts (again for less) and served some breakfast items all day long.
They also had a terrific couple of specials that we took advantage of (see pics). The setting was a splashing Koi pond and shaded, inviting outdoor area, that was relaxing in every way.
We ordered at the counter and they gave us a plastic fruit to set on the table to indicate where our order was to be served.
The Wild Salmon Burger was large, thick, hand-made and delicious, served with a choice of Salad, chips or soup--we opted for the curried zucchini soup.
The Cobb Salad was served with a vinaigrette that paired perfectly with the hand chopped chicken bacon and blue/goat cheese. That too had the soup of the day and we were delighted with the rich, chunky curry-spiced zucchini soup.
In every way, this place is exactly the kind of place I love to hang out--especially if I'm on vacation. It is not fussy, or formal or touristy AND it is reasonably priced and serves excellent food; a tough combination to find.

Unfortunately even a day later in the shop they did not have our shots in the right place or date. We even checked on-line but they do not have an ideal way of locating your particular pictures.
You need to locate your date, the company you adventured with, the time of your adventure (AM/PM) and then you scan page after page of shots looking for your raft or kayak.
So I'll write an update when they post our pictures, but it's a bit disappointing to not see them even a day after the event.
Their Ice cream is good if a bit pricey but they are generous and make a mean shake (Try the Chocolate Peanut Butter).
I've removed 1 star because of a few things on the return visit.
First, they were crowded and I think the kitchen was overwhelmed because my Eggs Benedict and all the entrees came out late. My home fries were on their way to lukewarm and were not good.
Second, the coffee is not worth $2.00 and so I skipped it (although I tried a sip again to verify how weak this coffee is). This is coffee they are clearly stretching.
Third and most importantly: this place charges too much for their food. 1 large waffle with syrup and a few blueberries and they want $11. Same with three large ginger-spiced pancakes. $11. For a side of bacon they want $4. A "Large" glass of orange juice (maybe 4 oz) was $4.
Their value is seriously lacking and I will not be back if I can find other Moab breakfast places that are more reasonable.

This breakfast-only place (7 AM-12 PM) is known for its breakfasts; and deservedly so, although nearly $11 per entree is steep.
The portions are big and the flavors of our Eggs Florentine with fresh spinach and spicy sauce, the perfectly done home fries, and my 3 egg Chorizo Scramble with sour cream, salsa, and corn tortillas were excellent over all.
The Italian Roast coffee was OK --not particularly rich tasting, nor too weak. My wife had two cups and was convinced that it was decaf.
The waitress was really very nice and attentive.
So overall very good and worth a trip if you are traveling thru Moab.
Oh well: what we did discover was that our first visit was not a fluke. We tried two other of their beers, the Derailleur Ale and the Elephant Hill Hefeweizen; both good.
None of the beers have much foam carbonation to them, so are maybe a bit flatter than a commercial beer.
The Hummus appy was good with sun-dried tomatoes and apparently fresh hummus that might have stood more garlic, but it was still a very nice starter.
The special was a Shrimp Pene that was very nicely seasoned with large juicy shrimp. The Rainbow Tortellini was really good. The two Texas Pit Smoked entrees (Chicken and Combo) were each large. The chicken as 1/2 a large chicken and their onion rings were as good as ever. The chicken, tri-tip and Ribs on my Combo were very dry (1/4 chicken breast and wing), excellent (tender juicy), and superb respectively. The ribs were perfectly smoked; juicy and meaty--some of the best I've had recently.
Fries on my combo were good but not great.
The Cole Slaw was very good but maybe could have been a larger portion to balance the huge meat portions, but that's nitpicking.
We had more than enough to eat and then take home for leftovers.
Service was very very good and a real pleasure (thanks AJ).
All in all, a real feast and for not too much for 4 people (about $85 with drinks and before tip).
Definitely on our list of Moab places to return to.

The Microbrews are very good. We had a Rocket Cycle Wit Beer and a Scorpion IPA were very good ($3.50 ea.) and were perfect additions to the
- $9 Yummy Fish tacos (with real, crunchy, taco shells, vegetarian chili, and rice) that had jicama sticks seasoned with cilantro.
- $8 Sliced prime rib sandwich (generous lean) meat with cheese that had a terrific horse radish sauce and fantastic beer-battered onion rings. The only thing is the bun came off a bit soft--more like an oversized hot dog bun when it could have been a nice Italian roll.
Nice relaxed decor with outdoor themes of Moab, biking, 4WD site-seeing, kayaking, handgliding, rafting, etc.
Deserts looked good enough to come back for; so we are!

Bryce Canyon Lodge
Categories: Hotels, American (New)
So you arrive at Bryce Canyon around lunchtime ready to marvel at the myriad of hoodoos (via all the many overlook points) but also suppressing a growling stomach. What to do?
Eating at the Bryce Canyon Lodge is good to very good. Their selection of food for lunch is limited by the Department of the Interior-contracted Xanterra corporation, which gives the place a more of a food service cafeteria feel than a rustic Utah lodge dining restaurant. This is not a really bad thing, just that the Xanterra corporation's presence could have been a bit more muted and less apparent in the restaurant.
This review is restricted to lunch there, not the lodging or the souvenir shop.
You can either pig out at the Bryce Canyon Taco Bar for $11, which is quite good by the way, or you could choose from a rather sparse menu of standards, Appys: Chicken Quesadilla or Buffalo wings - $9
Two lunch salads for $9.50 each, or one of eight burgers and sandwiches all roughly $8.
The Navaho Trail Grilled Cuban (Sliced roasted pork loin, honey ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on a pressed hoagie roll) was very good and would have easily been my choice second to the Taco bar.
The Taco bar had all the fixings you could want for a taco; seasoned sliced chicken breasts, ground beef, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, olives, shredded lettuce, onions, tomato chunks, your choice of either taco shells or warmed tortillas. The shells were busted but they were thin and crisp and served as an excellent base to the above fixings. It's even got your standard sides of Spanish rice, re-fried beans and black beans--all pretty good.
The Rim Garden Burger and Inspiration Cheeseburger were reported to be good by our friends.
I recommend paying the additional 65 cents to upgrade the fries to the excellent sweet-potato fries.
The coffee was quite good by food service standards but was nearly $3 with unlimited refills.
The service was very friendly and the setting was rustic and very very old lodge-like, full of dark browns and heavy-feeling timbers.
This place in Torrey was decent for a burger. I had the Pastrami Burger which was big and had decent fries. The special a Bleu Cheese Grilled Chicken burger was very tasty and was a pleasant surprise. They also served fish and chips but while OK, looked the farthest thing from fresh fish for sure--looked very much like a Van deKamp fish dinner.
Still, the place was a bit barren (with decoration consisting of antique-looking metal signs with many jokes) and it felt a little dead overall.
If it is still there, when you pass through, it is not a bad burger place.
Date

No really.
3.5 stars for the food (3 for the chicken fried steak and 3.5 for the Parmesan Chicken and 4 for the Oreo Cookie Pizookie--YUM) and nice atmosphere and the good service from Frank.
Plus: an Extra 1/2 star for something I see rarely happening: they brought out pieces of their deep dish pizza to serve people waiting for a table (which could be long. TIP: call ahead and reserve a place in line. They only do reservations for parties of 10+).
So between this location and their Cupertino location, I must've lucked out because I am really pleased overall with them.
