Haunted History's Cemetery French Quarter…
Category: Tours
But here's a side note: All tours are totally dependent on your tour guide. I took the Haunted History Ghost Tour and was bizored out of my pea-picking brain. I suggest you pop into the Decatur Street city tour store front and talk to one of the folks there before booking a tour. They can tell you who is the best at what not. When we were there they even called to see when the person they were suggesting was working next. Do not go by the ten gazillion borchures which all pretty much say the same thing and have really cool graphics.
These tours are a great way to learn the history of the city in a fun way. Pay attention, and do NOT forget to tip the guide. He needs a beer.
Yes, I agree with all previous reviews that the space, location and table service are improvements. I like anything that brings food closer to me.
Katie and I did splitsies on a sandwich and salad and we were both pleased. Our waiters seemed a bit wet behind the ears...or he might have fallen prey to Katie's beauty. That happens all the time when we go out to lunch. Either way he was attentive.
We should do a lunch UYE here slightly before or after the lunch rush. If we do, pay attention to the address. They are not as easy to find, but totally worth the effort.
That being said, you cannot crumble just ANY cornbread in milk. It has to be super sweet. Mak's Place in Commerce makes the best cornbread I've ever had the privilege to crumble. And the cornbread was not the only thing to make my "best I've ever had" list.
Best meatloaf...seriously. And the tomato gravy served over it was insane. I had them put extra on my mashed taters. It was that good. I had corn nuggets. How do they get creamed corn deep fried?
My Mama (grandmother) had chicken fried steak. Her teeth ain't so good so we asked if the meat were tender enough for her to chew. The little gal behind the counter said they'd sure nuff tender it up some more to be sure. And they sure nuff did.
Crap...slipping into hick mode. Okay, it was almost worth the drive from Dallas to Commerce. Beats the pants off all the stuff we have masquerading as home cookin' here in Dallas proper.
Food at Mak's was better than a crocheted slop jar. Thar it goes again.

The Ozona Grill & Bar
Categories: Breakfast & Brunch, American (Traditional)
Here is the warning though...the gravy is terrible--conglomerated milk gunk--no flavor. I had to put a whole shaker of pepper in it. I had fries on the side with the plan of dipping those in the gravy also, good thing I had queso. Bad gravy can ruin a whole meal.
Chips and queso are good. Drinks were strong enough. Service was eh. Patio was nice, but we ate inside since it was still pretty warm out. Inside was way way way too cold. We were pretty uncomfortable and my gravy got cold fast, which was NOT a plus.
Burr and blah. That's the official ruling.

JG's Old Fashioned Hamburgers

I was fully prepared to give this place a low rating. Atmosphere is weird and a little dodgy. $20 got us two drinks, two burgers and cheese fries. The cheese fries were just okay.
Then I took a bite of the burger. Fresh well-seasoned meat cooked to perfection, bun toasted on the grill with butter, real cheese as opposed to fake conglomerated yellow oil patty and fresh fixins saved this place.
Go ahead and eat inside even though it looks like an exploded flea market. The outside was not pleasant with all the loud foot traffic selling their wares in the parking lot. There are plenty of other families inside..hiding.
Katie and I were waffling about one night, not knowing where to go or what to do. We'd eaten dinner at Scalini's and I was in the mood for jazz...not a lot of places to go for jazz in Dallas. We ended up at the Balcony Club. Okay, seriously I was hoping we'd go there. I like the place and hadn't been in aggggeeeessss.
The crowd is mixed, but definanatly not a 20-something scene. There will be some younger folks and some older folks, but the average age hovers around the 30 to 40 bracket.
Jazz is cool, drinks are strong. Need I say more?!
Then La Calle Doce saved the day.
"Yes you may have our brand new room. How about an all you can eat fajita bar with all the fixins' for $9 kids and $11 adults including drinks?! Sure you can bring your own dessert. And yes, we will keep bringing food until everyone is full and happy."
La Calle Doce, I love you. XOXO
Either way I'm a big fan of corned beef hash. And I don't care if it's out of can, even though it looks gross right when you let the can shaped giant conglomerate of corned beef slide out and it retains it's cylindrical appearance. I still love it.
And the Gold Rush Cafe has it. Most places don't bother. The eggs were fine. We did run out of tea a few times. The place wasn't packed but those who were there early on Friday morning seemed to be regulars.
I'll give it another whirl. I never pass total judgment until I've had the pancakes. I bet they would put the hash on them for me.
Needless to say, I did not eat said fish...which I had named Oliver.
I do not eat crawfish. I do not really like any shell fish except for shrimp and then it has to be fried or in a sauce over pasta. Fried fish fillets have to be super fresh or I won't eat them.
All that being said...I really like Big Shucks. The crabcakes are AMAZING. The shrimp salad is spicy. And the whole "honor system" at the register renews my faith that people are inherently good.
This is my go to place after an event when I need to have a beer and unwind.

I'm not really a sit outside and watch a long game kind of gal. And that's okay because I'm totally a drink beer sit in the club and eat prime rib kind of gal, and the latter is what we did. The ballpark has a great buffet. Prime rib, assorted imported cheeses, nine layer dip, grilled Tilapia, garlic chicken breast, artichoke heart pasta salad, cinnamon rolls, fresh fruit...the list is outstanding and includes hot dogs and nachos for the purist.
The club seating is nice with table clothes and comfy chairs--no stadium seating here. And you can see the game just fine. They also have a GREAT dessert bar for a little more, but I had prime rib and port cheese for dessert.
The game was great. We almost didn't find the car! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING ME GRANT, JACK AND RUSSELL! Y'all are the best EVAH!
