This place has been around for a while and it's the best place to go IMHO in the city.  Good medication options here and it's not like some of the other places that seem to just be places people hang out at and enjoy their meds.  Cookies and tincture are great alternatives and it's kept my neurological pain at ease.

Chicago O'Hare Garden Hotel

Category: Hotels

1 star rating

I am sitting here with sweat dripping off me onto my glasses blurring my view of the screen in the sweltering lobby of the un-air-conditioned Chicago O'Hare Garden Hotel, perhaps the worst hotel I've ever been to and I used to stay at some GHETT-O places during high school for spring break in Panama City Beach, FL in the "redneck riviera"

Back to the matter at hand.  The walls in the halls are all scratched up and dirty, half the light sconces are broken and the carpets are dirty and beat up.

Not an impressive property, but it sure is cheap.  I was also welcome to some big splotchy stains on my sheets, a toilet paper holder that was barely hanging on for life, and all but one of the lamps weren't even plugged in so I had to plug everything in.

Well, I guess this place will make me appreciate every other place I stay at that much more :)

Well there are already plenty of rave reviews for Beretta so I will keep this short, but they have fantastic cocktails, amazing food and the space is pretty cool.  The only thing is it's a bit cramped in there when it's busy but if you have eaten out in NYC a lot then it's not a big deal at all and way more spacious than most Manhattan joints.

Great stuff and perfect place for a date or just a nice meal with friends!

So I met Mark from ShootQ here for lunch to chat photography business stuff and he took me to Ria's.  I immediately liked it from the outside and it's location across the street from the graveyard.

The food was outstanding too. I had the turkey sandwich which was perfectly grilled up and the salad that accompanied it was just right.  Mark had the baked sweet potato which was delish looking too.

They had an awesome mural on the wall too which was actually created by someone from San Francisco so there was a little bit of home there to make the environment seem even warmer and welcoming!

Spuntino Pizza

Ok dropped in here for a sub since I had eaten pizza for like 4 of my last 5 meals at that point in my trip and while the sub wasn't bad it was pretty standard stuff. The staff were pretty nice and it seemed like a chill spot and there really aren't many spots around this area.

I'd definitely suggest eating here over Hooters nearby and from all the great pizza reviews I've seen, I think you might be better off getting pizza than a sub.

My new 'worst-ever' restaurant experience happened here while I had a long layover at CLE airport. I dunno if the waitress had a particularly stressful day but it sure seemed like she was on the edge of a breakdown.  She was frazzled and forgot my order (I suspect), considering how long it took and the fact that it wasn't correct.  And when I asked for some ranch dressing on the side it took another ten minutes and I had to remind her about it.

The food was unremarkable, not that I expect that much from an airport restaurant, but I sure wish I went with one of the fast food chains instead of this local joint.  I guess that's what I get for supporting the one place I had never heard of...

Ah Momma Gs!  I will forever love the Momma's Love.  And the cheap ass beers, and the darts and the drunken times here.  It's not quite the same as the last time I came in there were families eating and everyone looked so sober!  Well the sandwiches were still good and they still have that same ancient hand pumped steamer that I love so much...

Well what can you say about chains like Outback.  They are pretty consistent with what they do and personally I'm not a big fan in general.  This one was what you'd expect and I'd give it a standard three stars but they get an extra star for their service.  Staff was pretty nice and attentive and the Manager that night, Sayeh Naddaf, was super friendly and checked in on me personally.

Maybe I looked outta place or they were nervous about me or something ut whatever it was I enjoyed the courtesy and teamwork.

Richard's Bar

 Update - 6/27/2009 1 photo
While the exterior is no frills, this is after all a dive bar and and the gruff bartender and numerous locals make this place a great way to escape the summer heat.  The A/C is blasting inside and while there are no beers on tap there's a decent selection of standard beers that you'd expect in this type of place.

I went in the late afternoon on  a weekday and everyone seemed to know each other.  I noticed one guy smoking and thought I had seen a no smoking sign, when the bartender came over to me and told me I had a drink on the house.  I looked down the bar hopeful to see the hot girl with the tattoos smiling back at me but alas nobody was looking my way so I had no idea where the drink came from.

Turns out it was Bob the owner who bought me a drink (as well as everyone in the bar.  Now that's the kind of bar I can definitely support and it was the 2nd time I had been here since it's close to my friend Sarah's place and not all trendy and hip like a lot of the places closer to her pad.

Never been at night, but definitely my favorite dive in Chicago...

Sweet divey bar.  The have the A/C blasting inside and the bartender is totally old school style, chomping on a cigar while he works away.  I love that it's also a package store so if you think you're going to drink six or more beers, just buy at the six pack price!

Red Bar

What can you say, this is a hotel bar that's slightly upscale but matching for the most part the clientele of the Hyatt it's in.  I exclusively stay here when I'm covering the NPC Jr Nationals outside of Chicago every year and consume many an adult beverage here as well as at least one meal.

Nothing special but it's not bad or anything.  It's a solid bet and when it's open I prefer to eat here than the schmancier O'H restaurant.  But being where the hotel is if you don't wanna take a cab to get out of the area then this is about your only option.

Cheers!
