West La Dental Health Center
Category: Dentists
Neighborhood: Culver City
F*CK this place. Do not go to this dental office. First off, I spent almost an hour with an inexperienced dental assistant who couldn't get my x-rays correct. They had to bring in a more 'experienced' person who basically was more rough, jamming the film into my mouth, making me gag. And on top of that, the dentist who "examined" me is extremely rude and an A-hole. His name is Arash Sabbagh-Fard, D.D.S. So if you see this doctor's name in any dental office--LEAVE IMMEDIATELY. His chairside/bedside manner is absolutely horrible. I basically came in their for a routine cleaning and check-up and all he did was look at my x-rays, and told me I needed all these procedures that was going to cost me $10,000 on top of what my insurance could cover. He didn't even bother to do the cleaning I originally came for and him and his office manager (Ericka Peralta) were continuing to try and sell me on the "needed" operations, making me feel like an idiot for not doing it. After I didn't agree to the procedure and wanted a second opinion, they charged me $46 and basically let me out. In my experience in any dental office, the doctor typically examines and cleans my mouth before making any diagnosis. Arash simply looked at the X-Rays and jumped to quick conclusions which basically caused me to question his diagnosis because he didn't even examine my teeth or ask me any questions.

Southwood Barber Shop
Category: Barbers
In our days of salons, cosmetologists and stylists, its hard to find a good-old barber shop a guy can go to get a haircut. The guys at Southwood Barber Shop will cut your hair very well and when you walk into the place you are greeted with a warm welcome. My barber, Jack, takes the time to really cut my hair, making sure everything is nice and clean and doesn't rush the job.
This barbershop has the look and feel of a traditional barber shop, complete with a vintage barber pole and cash register. Prices are reasonable, costing $15 a haircut with discounted rates for seniors.

I'm no expert on cars and the maintenance of them but I do know enough to know when a mechanic is just trying to edge another sale out of me. If you're looking for a good, honest, helpful, and independent auto mechanic, Perucho Auto Repair is what you need. I recommend this place because the man who runs the place, Gilbert, gives you a genuine diagnostic and recommendations for your car as oppose to more "big-name" corporate alternatives (i.e. dealerships, jiffy-lubes, and sears) who try to manipulate you into giving them more money. Gilbert did diagnostics on my car right in front of me, showing me things that were needed and not needed to be done. There were some occasions where he recommended that I not need service and I didn't feel too bad or unsure about it. I just know he was being honest with me and was out for me and my car's best interests. Unlike places where I've gone like Sears or the Honda Dealerships, where they make me feel like I'm an idiot or force me to do certain repairs and are only out for their best interests as oppose to their customers. The quality of work Perucho Auto Repair is great and he walks you through what he did when you pick up the car. Oh yeah, the prices are reasonable and significantly less than more corporate alternatives.
Only drawback to this place is that, there's only one or two mechanics so it may take up to a day to finish your car. So you'll need to bring someone with you when you drop off and pick up your car. However, I'd trade long great quality personal service over impersonal over-priced quick service any day.

I hate the service & repairs of this dealership with a passion. They are underhanded, sneaky, and downright dishonorable. If a zero rating were possible in any way, they would get a negative ten.
My experience with service associate Francis Villanueva is one of the many perfect examples of underhanded, sneaky and dishonorable service employees there. (Note: My poor experience with them was about a year and a half ago but I'm still so upset about it, I must yelp about it to prevent further injustices to future potential customers.) I don't want to bore anyone with the details but basically, he and everyone else there just tries to slime their way into getting business from customers. They "suggest" services that are sometimes unnecessary and they charge this ridiculous $139 diagnostic fee which isn't even credited towards final repairs. So, if you basically ask questions on what's wrong with your car and they figure out what you're supposed to do, they'll f'ing charge you for it. Other places would at least credit the diagnostic fee towards any final repairs or do it for free.
BOTTOM LINE, DON'T GO HERE. YOU WILL BE RIPPED OFF.

American Sushi House
Categories: Sushi Bars, Japanese
This is my favorite sushi spot in the Bay Area. They have reasonable prices, friendly service, and hearty servings. The choices of sushi are plentiful, offering both traditional and contemporary sushi as well as other things like Bento Boxes and such. One of my favorite sushi is called the "French Kiss." All in all, if you're in the Peninsula, and you want some good sushi, go here!

Portfolio Coffeehouse

I stopped by this Cafe during a short trek to Long Beach. It was a hot day and I wanted some kind of iced coffee. I chose this cafe because of the "Voted Best Cafe" sign on their window. Overall, I think it has a relaxing vibe and a very nice vintage feel. My peanut butter blended ice coffee was pretty good. I would have given this place 4 stars but I felt the service wasn't too great as I felt rudely rushed by the barista when I was ordering. And, they charge to use their computers.

Butterfly Bistro - CLOSED

I hit this place up on a Sunday night looking for a chill spot to have a drink with a few friends in San Bruno. The servers and staff were all very warm and friendly and made my first experience really pleasant. I can't comment on the food, but the bar was cool. Although, the sofas and ottomans were somewhat hard. If you happen to go to the bar, ask Burt to make you a "Micah". Final word, if you're looking for a chill bar in San Bruno, this would be your choice.

Lost Souls Cafe
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Downtown
A terrific and humble cafe located in the Old Bank District in L.A. They offer an alternative "coffee house" atmosphere with local artwork, music, poetry readings, and speakers to compliment the great beverages and food they offer. My personal recommendation on their menu is the "Special Ube Shake" which is a blended taro drink--good stuff. If you're looking for a chill atmosphere to hang-out on any day of the week either by yourself or with your comrades, Lost Souls is it. Ooh, there's free wireless Internet access for customers and if you're lucky, you might run into Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling.
