The Edendale Grill

Category: American (New)
Neighborhood: Silver Lake

5 star rating

Housed in a 1920s fire station, this restaurant really retains the charm and atmosphere of silent era Hollywood.  The food is expensive, but worth the occasional splurge.  The outdoor patio and Mixville bar are also really cool.  This is a mellow and relaxing place to spend a summer night having drinks and chatting with friends.  While street parking is hard to find, they do have valet service, which is helpful.  I would also strongly suggest making a dinner reservation since the restaurant itself is small and can fill up quickly.  If you go to their official website, they even have a link where you can make your reservation and confirm it online, which is very handy!

This review may be wildly unpopular and I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm just calling it as I see it.

The service at this place is terrible.  The host is really slimy and hit on me.  The portions are INSANELY huge to the point where is just downright wasteful.  I mean seriously, their pancakes are like the size of jet engine tires.  There is no way a mere mortal can begin to eat all of that food.  Then of course pancakes don't exactly keep or lend themselves to being leftovers so it winds up being wasted.

The last time I was there they were extremely rude.  I was seated and waited for another friend to join me.  She was running  late since there was no parking to be found.  When she arrived they informed us that it was too late for her to order any food since they just seated a big party and those people were more important.  They literally told us this.  I was stunned.  All my friend wanted was a bagel, which I doubt would have thrown their kitchen off track or anything like that.

They were just so rude that I decided the excellent french toast wasn't worth the poor treatment.

Ragg Mopp Vintage

Category: Used, Vintage & Consignment
Neighborhood: Silver Lake

One thing I notice about Los Angeles is that you can often find good bargains by shopping in less "trendy" or obvious areas.  I notice that most vintage shops in Los Angeles tend to be on Melrose or La Brea or in that vicinity.  Ragg Mopp is at Sunset Junction in Silverlake and is well worth the drive.  While I've never had any direct dealings with the owners, the sales woman has always been incredibly friendly and helpful to me.  The only downside is that there doesn't seem to be any air conditioning in the store and when you have a big shopping impulse in mid-July, that can be a problem.  There is also no parking so walking up a hillside with many shopping bags....kind of rough when already in mid-heat stroke over the whole no AC thing....but I digress.

Otherwise, they do have a great selection and pretty reasonable prices.

Rocket Video

I often rent films based on my mood and where I'm at in the city that day, so I am one of the few people who still sets foot in a video store.  Rocket Video is a place that I love for one big reason--they carry bootlegs!  They have "Los Angeles Plays Itself" on a bootleg DVD and it is impossible to find this!!!!  In order to rent it, you have to pay to get a regular rental, but that's ok.  I'm perfectly happy to do so.  Plus Rocket Video actually has a parking lot, which is helpful and fairly rare in Los Angeles.  They have in store events and special guests from time to time as well.

All in all, Rocket is a good resource and worth dropping by if you are in the Hollywood area.

Cinefile Video

Category: Videos and Video Game Rental

4 star rating

Cinefile is a really fantastic video store and certainly one of a dying breed.  It is pretty much what my home video vault would look like, if I had the money to have a home....and a vault.  They have an incredibly selection, much of which is organized by directors which makes it really easy to have your own little at home retrospective.  Cinefile also has some pretty obscure silent films that I've never been able to find anywhere else.

The only downside to this store is that the customer service isn't exactly sterling, to put it mildly.  I've often been puzzled by their rude or simply inattentive behavior.  You'd think in the age of Netflix that they would seriously make more an effort to welcome people who actually want to come in person to their video store.

That said, I still try to look on the bright side  of things.  Since they do have such good titles I'm willing to let things slide.  Plus they are right next to the Nuart, which is convenient for the multi-tasking cinefile!

Alex Theatre

This 1925 deco movie palace is a true gem!  It now functions as a performing arts center and features everything from concerts, films, ballet. theatre and various other events.

There is a parking garage less than one block away that is very inexpensive!  There are also several restaurants you can walk to in the immediate area.

They have the Alex Film Society, which has several events throughout the year.  I attend the Three Stooges Festival every November!  They also show extra shorts and bonus items before each film.  Every September they host a Vaudeville Extravaganza that is fantastic!!

They also have FREE historic theatre tours several times a year!!!!!

This is a beautiful and first class venue!

(By the way, it is only one of 3 movie palaces to have a forecourt in Los Angeles.  The other two are the Egyptian and the Chinese.)

This theatre is so beautiful.  The architecture, design and restoration work is spectacular.  This a first rate place to see a movie!

The only thing that saddens me is that this theatre doesn't show movies on a consistent basis.  I wish they did!!

If you get a chance to attend the Los Angeles Conservancy Series "Last Remaining Seats" then you will get a fantastic movie / live show experience at the Orpheum.

Check out both of these sties to find out more and see photos!

I love what the American Cinematheque has done with this theatre.  They are really doing a great job of programming films that compliment what is playing at the Egyptian.  They also show more classic Hollywood films and family films which is great.  The theatre is clean, well kept and the sound and picture quality are superb!!!  The only downside for me is that there is only street parking.  Otherwise, this theatre is excellent venue and a great place for cinephiles who live on the West side!

The Way We Wore

Categories: Women's Clothing, Used, Vintage & Consignment
Neighborhood: Mid-City West

I collect vintage clothing and this store is fantastic!  They have super high quality vintage clothing.  I love their 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s pieces.  The staff is friendly and helpful.  The prices are super high, which is depressing.  One of two pieces for me would equal a month's rent!   On the other hand, the quality is so good that it is understandable.

Overall, this is an excellent store with beautiful and high quality goods!
