Maria's Mexican Restaurant & Cocktail

This place is the real deal folks.  I was amazed that there were any Yelp reviews out in Marysville, but glad people are getting out there.
I did my usual first time schtick and asked the waitress what she recommended which turned out to be a great decision.  Yea, I saw platters of fajitas and all that, but I stuck with the fish taco recommendation.
She did not steer me wrong.  Perfectly hot and seared white fish in crispy, oily corn tortillas.  That fish and tortilla and smattering of salsa was all this taco needed.  It was finished off with pretty darn good refrieds and sub-par rice (sorry, I'm Persian and it takes a lot to impress me in the rice department).  I also made the genius move of ordering tortilla soup to start.  The soup had a rich, chicken broth intensity, with the kick of spices.  It was finished with a small garnish of cheese and thinly fried tortilla strips that maintained a crunch even after sitting in the soup for awhile.
Why the four star then....the peach Margarita.  Super lame.  It had no real flavor profile, other than a mask of peach "flavoring" over a really bad mix.
This is my new Marysville stop if I have any more work out in Yuba.  Ill make sure to put in a request now...;)

Yes, the portions here are not gut busting.
No, there are few if any "roll" options.
Yes, the service may be a bit hands off or nonchalant, BUT
The food rocks my world.  Just look at the menu and show some respect for the care and commitment the owners have put in to sourcing some of the most unique seafood out there.
Every bite was soft, luxurious, and buttery all the way.  It was hard to show restraint, but my checkbook kept me in line.
This place is all Nigiri and that is how it should be.  Just save up and be ready for a sushi extravaganza.

I have to admit, when I first went here I was unimpressed by the look of these gargantuan salads.  Just avocado, egg, beans, sprouts, tomatoes and cucumber.  I mean come on.  I require at least five more ingredients.
This place is serious Berkeley...totally fruits and nuts and granola, but hey, for 8 bones it hits two spots.  The boyfriend and I love the bacon chef salad and the strawberry agua frescas.
The other awesome thing here is the BLT sandwich on their super sweet and soft brown bread.  I usually leave it behind when they give me a hunk with my salad, but somehow the sandwich is better.
Also, don't worry if you see a line.  These people know how to craft a salad in seconds and you'll be in and out in no time.  I second the excessive use of plastic wrap...it is pretty darn unbelievable.

I almost think writing more than this is too much.
Just make sure to mix the Tomato juice with V8, pickle juice, worchestishire, jerk sauce, and many more....
I promise folks...you want me making your BMs.

Here for a party and although it initially looked like a typical NB haunt, I was pretty darn blown away by my usual Whiskey Sour.  It had the body of a frothy Pisco Sour, but with two of my favorites instead.
Once I was sitting down enjoying my drink I was able to finally take a look around.  The bar is old timey, with that beaten and worn look.
I found the big dead space in the middle of the room to be a bit disappointing.  I wouldn't mind some dancing or figuring out some other use.  The crowd is 50/50.  Fifty percent cool, fifty percent not.  Take that for what its worth.

This place makes me happy.  So happy that I had my boyfriend's welcome to the city party here.  Its a Mission institution and brings me joy that years before my love frequented its beaten black booths.  Additionally, during Easter a group of bunnies and one anti-bunny (moi) convened on the 500 backroom for an hour or two of debauchery.
Awesome Bloody Mary's for a dive and one of the only places with a Jukebox and photo booth (but at $5 a pop its a major SF-style ripoff).
Furthermore, this is a mid week stop, because unfortunately the Marina creep has made its way to the 500 and unless you want to be completely frustrated I say stay away and hit up something else (or a friend's backyard).

Mexico DF

This place is the epitome of hit and miss.
The hits, including the margaritas, guacamole, carnitas, and chilequiles really sing here.
The true travesty are the misses, that really pull everything else down.  My girlfriend tonight ordered the carne asada tacos and they just looked awful.  We are talking sad, dry, chewy meat.  The same goes for many other items on the menu.  I just have a really hard time lauding a place that can take you from the best to the worst on one menu.
Mexico DF may be working out the kinks, and I will patronize it given the amazing happy hour and proximity to work, but I am becoming more and more wary to try anything new here.

Beware All!
There are Two Churro Guys out there.
One is great.  The other, NOT great.
Great guy is usually at 22nd or 23rd at Mission.
Not great guy is at the Ferry Building hawking his awful wares to unsuspecting pseudo-gourmands that frequent the Saturday Market.
Please....go authentic and support my Churro Man in the Mission.  When the churros are hot, they are pretty fantastic...for $2 in SF its pretty darn affordable.

This vegetarian stalwart has infinitely upgraded to cater to this yuppies heart by changing locales.  I went with my girlfriend for a super relaxed lazy Friday lunch, ending up sharing a bottle of wine and one egg and one thai peanut savory dish.
I'm a scramble person and this veggie delight did not disappoint.  There is nothing bland or overly healthy about my eggy tasty treat (which I personally appreciate...read Cafe Gratitude in SF).  Savory, fluffy eggs, with salty feta and sauteed vegetables.
The peanut saute was also flavorful and filling.  I am now sorry I did not save room for the desserts, because they actually looked appealing.  I am not a vegetarian hater, but I tend to lean heavily on the meat side of the fence, but Watercourse is coool by me!

My bf and I come here solely for the egg sandwiches on croissant.  They kick a&% even beside the fact that the coffee is one step above mediocre.  This place is perfect on a sunny day when you can grab your spinach, cheese and egg sandwich and sit out on the "patio" and bask in the East Oakland sun..;)
