Kendall College

Categories: Colleges & Universities, Cooking Schools
Neighborhood: Goose Island

5 star rating
 12/13/2005
Kendall College is not only one of the premier culinary arts school in the United States, it also houses a dining restaurant that is open to the public Monday through Friday for lunch (12 noon -- 1:30 p.m.) and Tuesday through Saturday for dinner (6 p.m. -- 8p.m./ 8:30 p.m. on Saturday).

The dining experience is hosted by culinary students who also are the servers and the chefs.  The entrees are worthy of any fine dining restaurant, but at a casual dining price. Please comment on your dining experience, since your opinion will help prepare these student chefs to become the future chefs of five star restaurants.

Kendall College sits on the Chicago River near the Halsted and Chicago intersection. The location may seem familiar to people who haven't visited Chicago in a while and you may think you don't remember a culinary college at that location. You're right. The building that now houses Kendall College use to be the test kitchen for Sara Lee. Now that's what I call recycling a well loved product.

Melting Pot

The first time I tasted fondue delights from Melting Pot was at a catered event. The fruits were so fresh and the chocolate fountain was a marvel. Now I see chocolate fountains at several restaurants. It seems as if every restaurant wants to fondue. Melting Pot is a great place to go with girlfriends to talk, laugh, and relax over a simple yet delicious dessert experience.

Agami

Neighborhood: Uptown

When you walk into Agami it's like diving into an underwater eatery. The orange copper tone colors of tiled walls and sea-shaped sculptures are reminiscent of scenes from scuba diving adventures. My favorite section of this Japanese restaurant is the arc-shaped bar with a sea foam blue counter that reminds me of the different hues of water seen on any Caribbean isle.

My friend ordered the Eel Garden Roll, which I declined to taste because certain things in the sea are too scary looking for me to swallow. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Rice Crispy, which is the chef special. Spicy tuna is placed on crispy rice and garnished with jalapenos. Hot sake makes this dish perfect.

Red Ivy

Categories: Nightlife, Restaurants
Neighborhood: Lakeview

4 star rating

What is the opposite of the green ivy that grows inside of Wrigley Field? Red Ivy, the new sports lounge across the street from the second oldest ballpark in the U.S. The sports lounge has several flat screen TVs to watch sporting events, a bar, and a restaurant dining area. This is the perfect place for all of us north siders not wanting to make that long trek downtown to eat at one place and drink at another place til the wee hours.

The menu has all the standard fare like pizza, sandwiches, and appetizers, but it also has pasta dishes that are filling and most importantly delicious. Red Ivy is the new hot spot in Wrigleyville and will be even hotter when baseball season starts.

Equinox

Equinox is a home and garden store that has been the jewel of Lakeview shopping for years. The store sells vases, porcelain ornaments, and other unique items that are perfect for bookshelves, mantels or tables.

The best time to shop Equinox is during the Christmas season. Over 20 tree designs are displayed throughout the store with various ornaments ranging from Christopher Radko to golden angels.

The customer service is top notch. Phenomenal. Are you treating me with respect? kind of shock service.

CD One Price Cleaners

Category: Dry Cleaning & Laundry
Neighborhood: Lakeview

5 star rating

Cleaners Depot, CD One Price Cleaners is the cheapest cleaners in the Lakeview neighborhood. Twice a month I walk ten blocks, pass five cleaners to pay the low price of $1.99 per garment at CD (the price increased from $1.50 since the CD first opened).

CD cleans clothes only and no leather. I had my floor length winter wool coat cleaned for $1.99. A hat cleaned for $1.99. A silk blouse cleaned for $1.99. I can have 10 items cleaned for less than $20 compared to only five at the cleaners around the corner from my residence. The cheap price is why the line to Cleaners Depot is always out the door.

Mity Nice Grill

To get to Mity Nice Grill (MNG), you have to walk through Foodlife, the smorgasbord food stations at Water Tower Place. MNG is simply decorated and is the average wait to be seated by the hostess and give your order to the waiter restaurant. The food is okay. The bread is average. I actually prefer to eat at Foodlife.

Carmine's

Category: Restaurants
Neighborhood: Near North Side

5 star rating

This Chicago Italian eatery sits in the heart of the Rush Street restaurant area. With Tavern on Rush next door and Hugo Frog and Gibson's across the street, Carmine's summer outdoor patio is the perfect place to people watch.

When I eat at Carmine's I order the same two dishes, 'Linguine with Broccoli and Shrimp,' fresh linguine with tender shrimp and broccoli florets in a garlic and olive oil sauce or the 'Molto Grande Whitefish,' fresh Lake Superior broiled with a lemon butter sauce, served with potato onion torte and sauted spinach.

The portions are so large you have to take half of the meal home. I usually take my leftovers for lunch the next day and the aroma has the entire office asking where I purchased my food.

I must admit the first time I ordered the linguine with broccoli and shrimp I thought I could recreate the dish at home and impress my friends with my newly discovered culinary skills. Let's just say substituting vinegar and olive oil salad dressing did not come close to the fare at Carmine's.

Irazu Costa Rican Restaurant

Categories: Latin American, Vegetarian
Neighborhood: Bucktown

3 star rating

As the only Costa Rican restaurant in the city limits, I had to try it at least once. I must say the sweet plantains were better than what I had when I was in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The avocado, onion, and cilantro salsa is not spicy. If you want spicy, go to any Mexican restaurant.

I like the friendly casual atmosphere and how the servers and owners address you by your first name.

I appreciate restaurants that serve organic food and GDS falls into that category. The best night for dancing to Chicago's own "House Music" is Monday and the floor is crowded until 4 a.m. The patio is the place to have dinner in the summer, especially watching the boats pulling up to the dock. Fortunately, I haven't seen any diners fall from their boats into that dirty Chicago River.
