Grindz!!! If you craving Korean and you know how to get here, GET HERE!!! The food is so ONOLICIOUS and they give choke (a lot)!!! The Kalbi is good, the chicken is good, the Meat Jun going broke yo' face! They even sell Taegu (sweet & spicy dried cod fish) to go! Yummy's is great but as far as good service and great prices topped with food that taste so good you would risk your stomach bursting, just to force one more bite of the Kal-Bi or Korean chicken in your mouth...
Ho, I getting hungry... gotta book my flight back home now... Like Race?

Zippy's...what more of a staple of 'local mix-plate style' food can there be?
My all time usual order when I come back here? THE CHICKEN/CHILI MIXED PLATE. Why? Those are probably 2 of the best signature items on the menu. Yeah, the Zip pack has the teri beef & spam and yeah, the spaghetti is good too...but the fried chicken vs. Zippy's famous chili? mmmm...that's a tough one. Might as well get both, right?
Zippy's is the fail-safe place to go when you're hungry in Hawaii (mainly Oahu but I think Maui has one too now) and most of them are open 24 hrs.
The reason I chose to write about this one was that a couple years ago, we stopped by this one on the way to Haleiwa from my cousin's house in Mililani. It was here that I barely "discovered" the breakfast menu. Yeah, all those childhood years I lived in Hawaii and countless times I've been back, I never ordered from the breakfast menu. My favorite: the Portuguese sausage sandwich and an "Orange Bang" (whipped orange juice) to drink.

Wow. I haven't been here in such a long time but I can still remember all the times my Grandpa ordered me a "Loco Moco" for breakfast. He always used to take me here, I guess was his favorite spot. Back then, the Loco Moco came in a styrofoam bowl, so that the rice, hamburger patty and gravy covered egg all fit on top of eachother perfectly. And oh, so ONO. -That's how I remember Loco Moco's.
With the recent rash of "Hawaiian BBQ" places popping up all over the mainland, the franchises and wannabe's have diluted what is unique to the staple of Hawaiian 'cuisine'. I'm just glad that I can still go back "home" and find places like Kandi's (and Blaines) that still provide the ambience and real meaning to a "Hawaiian Drive Inn" and not just a gimmick to sell "Local" food. Next time I go back to Hilo, I'll hit the place up and give a more up to date review. Aloha.

I ain't gonna lie. I'll spend $30 on myself here. I mean 1 plate is $12, a soda's $1 and there's a smoothie truck right in the vicinity, so you do the math. I don't know why everybody's scared of the #2? A little spice is good for you, speeds up your metabolism, clears out your sinuses and probably resets your palate. But the scampi is the way to go...12 big ass Kahuku shrimp, a stick of butter, a couple splashes of white wine and about 4 tablespoons of minced garlic. Whoever is satisfied with 1 plate is depriving themselves. You only live once and there's only one Giovanni's Shrimp Truck. And while you're ordering 2 plates, make the second one spicy.

Well, for my 100th review I thought I'd review something special. So I'm going to review my own cooking. =P I'll update this review with pictures whenever I happen to cook something that's "a hit"...and maybe even occasionally when I disappoint myself and make something that tastes like hot dog water.
I've been cooking now for about 8 years. Some recipe's I've "borrowed" from my Mom and Grandpa...some recipe's I've found on the internet and some recipe's I just make up as I go. I would say my cooking today has evolved and I can pretty much make anything I've made at one time or another on the fly... I get in "moods" for certain types of cuisine every now again...Cajun, Mediterranean, Mexican, Japanese, Thai... but my Bread-n-Butter is "Local Food", you know, same stuff you would order at L&L's...except mine tastes about 100 times better.
Well, I didn't want to be biased so I'll start off with a 3 star rating and if some of you ever get to try my cooking, please feel free to 'Yelp me'. Mahalo's...
Although all 3 of these sauces are outstanding, being a "Food Pyro" (I love spicy sh*t) I used the "BBB" sauce on everything. Pork ribs, beef ribs, chicken, bacon & eggs, sandwiches... I think the kicker was during Christmas, when I marinated a top sirloin roast in it. Even though that roast was one of the last entrees out of the oven, it was the first one gone... with several victims perspiring and asking for more at the same time.
So this past weekend I finally paid a visit to the source of this infamous sauce. Needless to say, the food was DELICIOUS. I had the "taster", where you can order your choice of 3 meats. I opted for the Brisket, Memphis sweet smoked Pork (pulled pork) and Rib tips. I initially ordered the Tri-Tip, but at the last minute changed it up to the rib tips. For my side dishes, I got the Mac & cheese and the potato salad. It also comes with a corn bread muffin.
Both the Brisket and smoked pork were ridiculously tender... the rib tips - not so much. They weren't horrible, but lets just say I should've stuck with the Tri-Tip. My wife found a new friend in their "Texas Red sauce", which she doused her Pulled Pork Sandwich with. (we bought a bottle to take home) The potato salad was a perfect texture, with a little tangyness to it = delicious. The mac & cheese was creamy, cheesy and mmm, mmm good! The corn bread muffin was a little on the dry side but at that point I really didn't care!
Oh , I forgot to tell you that we ordered their "Chili-cheese & Brisket Fries". WOW. That's all I can say. Just WOW...
One thing I WISH I WOULD HAVE ORDERED: The St. Louis style Pork Ribs. My son ordered them & couldn't finish his, so... what the hell, right? After about half a swallow, I was convinced that I'm getting a whole slab the next time I go back to Memphis Minnie's. I haven't had that kind of regret since I forgot my camera that time I saw Jessica Alba in a 2 piece bikini at the Kahala Mandarin Hotel... (did I just say that out loud?) Oh well...
So, with all the praise I've just given this place, you're probably asking yourself: "Well then why did you only give them 4 stars?" It's simple. Portion size. Since my dish was $16.95 & included 3 items, I was thinking it would be a HUGE pile smokey BBQ... eh, it was ok. 4 slices of Brisket, about 3/4 cup of pulled pork & 4 rib tips. I hate to sound like a pig but dammit, I was hungry! Then I see some guy with a plate FULL of pork ribs... so again, it's no mystery what I'm getting next time.
Bottom line: Eat Here. If you like spicy, please try some "BeezleBob's Breath". (hint: it's not on the table)
But beyond all the "Willy Wonka-ness" of this tiny store lies the sole reason I would drive all the way back to Windsor, California...
...Coppa Mista by Gelato Classico... (no, it's not a book...or a perfume...)
If you don't know what it is, you better ask somebody. Nobody told me what it was, I had to find out for myself. I know now that I don't have to drive ALL THE WAY to Windsor to get it...
But I would if I had to...
Date

We first ate here for lunch and I had the "Smoky Mountian Chicken Plate". which was said to be a "staff favorite". Guess what? ONO... On our last day in Hilo, we ate here again and I had "Da Braddah", a 3 egg omelette with Portuguese sausage, ham, bacon, green onions& cheese...If that doesn't sound good , Eff-U! You're pupule. (crazy) Out of the numerous choices of pancakes, I ordered the Coconut pancakes and drizzled them with their Guava, mango, coconut & passion fruit syrups... MMMMMMMmmmmmm....... I wanna go back... =(
