I was so intrigued by the idea of an African restaurant and dance club, but the food didn't impress me.

Awesome atmosphere though, which is much appreciated when you're waiting an hour for a table, filled with cool plants, "exotic" decorations, and bartenders will to serve you elaborate alcoholic concoctions.

Hey look! Another hipster bar.

It's got a patio, the patio's great, go when the patio's open, hang out on the patio!

I can't quite put a finger on it, but I really enjoy eating here. Simple, cheap food, served on linoleum tables, that's never bland. Engaging to eat, and interesting drinks like honey wine.

Yeah, it's a hipster bar, but I'm ok with that!  It's a sweet place with awesome local beers. I've only been when it's filled with people standing and talking, but I'm ok with that too.

I'm not sure exactly what it is about this place, but I'm sooo enamored by it. I used to live just below it so I'd come up about once a week and stare at this beautiful city I love.  It has great views of the Mission, the Castro, and the Pac Heights area. It's also a great place to watch the fireworks, provided it's not too foggy!

Sure it's a tourist attraction, but it's in North Beach, which is a cute place to walk around. Bring your binoculars so you don't have to pay for the telescopes, and spend a while walking around and scoping out views of Alcatraz and the Bay.

Looking at San Francisco is one of my favorite things to do, and Bernal Heights gives you a unique view from the South. The entire Mission district sprawls in front of you, and you can see the bay off to your right and the Financial District off in the distance.

Plus, you can get ice cream at MaggieMudd's as a reward for hiking up that big hill :)

The Phoenix Bar & Irish Gathering House

Man, if you put "Irish" in front of anything, it makes it better.

Think about it.

irish coffee != normal coffee

Ok, that's the only one I can think of right now.

BUT! The Phoenix has Irish Nachos, which are like normal nachos, but made with potatoes instead of tortilla chips. So like, the best meal ever.

irish pub != normal pub

I'm so in love with the idea of this place -- a "socialist feminist fashionista clothing store"!! Unfortunately, the clothes are too feminine for my personal style though :(

Shaye owns this place, and is one of the coolest people I've ever talked to.  She has an adorable little dog named Cuba, who will whine as soon as you stand from your initial squat to pet him.  When I visited, she was busy painting a canvas while behind the counter (she painted all the art on the walls as well).  She told me stories of when she was a tango dancer in Guadalajara and as I flipped through the racks, she nonchalantly mentioned that everything was 50% off the lowest price. Oh.

As mentioned below, there's also a unique system of "checking out" clothes, which I love. It makes so much sense, especially since many of the clothes I'd want just for one night. The clothes are from various individual designers, including Shaye herself.

The best part of this place is just the atmosphere.  It feels like your grandmother's closet: full of fancy things that you're free to play with and try on and look at yourself in vintage mirrors. How fun :)

I was driving back to Boston from a spring break excursion when we decided yes, we needed some coffee. Yelp came to the rescue yet again, leading us to this kickass vegan coffeeshop - I had no idea Richmond had such a young hip vegan college scene.

This place also reminds me of the Otherside Cafe in Boston. Dusky lighting, tasty vegan entrees, and a sweet upstairs where you can hide from or spy on your fellow patrons.

If I ever pass through Richmond again, I'll definitely stop here for an espresso fix!
