One of the best things about being open to new experiences is that you never know what is just around the corner, or behind Door Number 3!

I recently took part in a Focus Group discussion at the downtown Denver office of Fieldwork Denver. It was on the 26th floor of the Wells Fargo Bldg, and if nothing else, the view was fantastic!

The focus group topic was a "Health Issue Survey." Before I went I wanted to believe this topic would be interesting, but I had some serious doubts. But it turned out to be a lively 2 hours that went by very quickly. I came away thinking that perhaps I needed to mull over this subject a little more.

I met some interesting people, who had some interesting ideas/opinions about this subject. Only question I had was: Why was the entire group women?  Don't men have opinions about health issues?

The facilities were comfortable and rather upscale. The moderator, Mark, was friendly and knowledgeable. I came away feeling like I had actually contributed to a worthwhile discussion . . . . and even perhaps moved the subject forward a tad.

If you live in the Denver area and are interested in participating in future discussions with Fieldwork Denver, the website is http://www.fieldwork.com or call them at 303-825-7788.

Tell them RachelC sent you!

Kohl's Department Store

Today was the 1st time I've ever set foot in a Kohl's.

I was in a hurry and needed to get a little PJ gift for a family member who is having to spend a few days in the hospital. This Kohl's on Parker Road was convenient.

Since I am not a shopper, I was pleasantly surprised to find this store almost empty . . . of both customers and sales staff. The deserted floor gave me time to select just what I wanted without someone hanging over my shoulder with a "Need help finding something?" every couple of minutes.

After selecting my purchases, I looked around for a sales clerk, a sales desk, or just someone to give my hard earned dollars to . . . nada. After wandering around ailmlessly for a few minutes I finally realized they have the miserable place set up like a grocery store . . . all checkout happens up front by the doors.  Hmmmm . . . . interesting!

So who is watching the merchandise?  Cameras?

Lots of sales going on.  I only spent 16.51 and saved 33.72.  Of course, it was probably all overpriced to begin with . . . but, hey, I feel like I got a good deal! And that's what counts, right?

Las Hadas Mexican Restaurant

Category: Mexican

4 star rating

My family is from New Mexico . . . home of the best Mexican food in the US. . . . . so I am always just a tad skeptical when someone says let's go out for Mexican food in Iowa, Little Rock, NYC, Atlanta or Denver.

But, I was pleasantly surprised at Las Hadas. Mind you, it is not "Tomasitas" or even "Daves not Here" in Santa Fe, but the food was good and the service was excellent!

Our server, Eva Adriana Navarro Torres, was friendly, smiling and made us feel like we were the most important table she was serving. Eva is one of those spots of light that make small strip mall restaurants shine. Food was good and we shall return; but most importantly we will be sure to ask to be seated at one of Eva's tables!

Taco Bell / KFC

Category: Fast Food

1 star rating
 Update - 6/17/2009
Mill Valley, CA or Aurora, CO  . . . . . does it really matter? KFC is pretty standard . . . all across the country.

Remember when fast food was still food? 100% real food. Maybe the fast food burgers & fried chicken were a little on the greasy side, but they were still 100% food. Not any more.

When did KFC's Honey turn into Honey Sauce? And WTF is Honey Sauce? Packaging says it is ONLY 11% honey. ELEVEN PERCENT! The other 89% filler is several forms of sugar. So, if KFC can't provide straight honey, imagine what's in the potatoes, gravy & cole slaw? And the "butter," which used to be straight margarine, is now "buttery blend." And I don't even want to conjure up scary images of what's in the extra crispy chicken coating.

Charge a little more, please, and give me real honey & real butter. 100% honey. 100% butter.  Until that happens, I will just cook my own fried chicken, thank you.

I MISS MY MOTHER'S FRIED CHICKEN!

My Mother was not the greatest cook in the world, but there were certain things from my childhood that she did absolutely right! Cherry pie, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes & creamed gravy, meatloaf and, of course, FRIED CHICKEN. And it was all served with lots of love.

So, since I no longer have the privilege of her company or her FRIED CHICKEN AND MASHED POTATOES, I have to admit every once in a while I will drive through and get some KFC chicken and take it home. I never, never get the potatoes - they taste like styrofoam and the gravy - yuck, way too salty . . . . but the chicken does sort of remind me of my Mom's  . . . not exactly, but enough that I'm willing to be caught in MV at the KFC and willing to, every once in awhile, suck down all those bad calories.

REMINDS ME OF MY CHILDHOOD! Nothing that does that can be all bad, right?

    P.S.  JUST HEARD VIA THE YELP GRAPEVINE THIS IS THE MV PLACE OF URBAN LEGENDS . . . 2002 . . . OR ARE THEY LEGENDS?  HMMMM . . . . . .

80s Prom Elite Event at Hi-Dive

TIME WARP! Did you feel it too?

Hi-Dive was the perfect location for an 80's Yelp Prom! No matter what decade or "century" you were dressed for . . . . it was a blast!

I overheard that Hi-Dive got lots of good publicity out of this Yelp event. Great for them! The bartenders worked hard, but recommendations for next time: Smiles & personality would be helpful, if you want us back! Yelpers spend money too! Suggestions: How about 80's name tags for the barkeeps? Why didn't they dress-up too?

Tiffany C. outdid herself once again with the "dressing-up" Yelp Elite party obsession. She looked fabulous! The theme decos were fun!

Music was great 80s, Prom Punch had a real bite, authenic 80s prom dresses were everywhere and the "Flock of Eagles" hair was perfect! A time warp for sure!

So  . . . . anyone's guess how our beloved YCM is going to top this one off next time?????

KICKING & SCREAMING!

Today I was pulled by my lower jaw kicking & screaming to Burger King by my youngest son for lunch. Why, in all that is holy in food preparation, these places have survived is a complete mystery to me.

Never had stomach problems no matter what I eat; but, as a direct result of my lunch today, tonight I am eating Tums like they are going out of style!

Qdoba Mexican Grills are springing up all over.

There is a solid reason.

The food is really good.

Simple, healthy food.

Try the new mango salsa salad.

Qdoba actually gives fast food a good name.

Bovine Metropolis Theater

So I think I've tapped into another hidden secret in Denver!

THE BOVINE METROPOLOS THEATER!

A cute little comedy theater that obviously knows how to laugh at itself and how to make your longest, busiest working days melt into side splitting laughter!

We had the privilege of attending a preview performance of "Hit and Run: Musical Improv!" We were completely & totally entertained from start to finish. I'm looking forward to returning for another performance with friends and family. Tickets are less expensive than going to a movie . . . and good live entertainment really can't be beat!

The only thing I would change is the little offerings of store-bought cookies and cheese & crackers. Ugh!

Better to not have anything;
 better to just offer bottled water;
 better to sell coffee & cupcakes to make a few $$;
 better to get local businesses to donate  . . . . .

The one lost star? Because my head hurts from trying to decide if the name is a comedy statement, a western historical reference, or just a really bad oversight.

The BM THEATER? Really? No, REALLY?!?
That would have been hilarious when I was 12 or 13.
Hopefully my humor has matured a little since then.

    ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH!

Fourth game, WC playoffs 2009! The Denver Nuggets proved that they aren't just the blue & white team; they are the "Golden Nuggets!"  The point range hovered around 11 points all four quarters . . . with a final win of 120 to 101.

In the post game interview LA's Kobe said "They whooped us!" and he was right. The Nuggets WHOOPED some Lakers A * * tonight!

Both are great teams to watch. Tough games, equally talented. Never a dull moment. Next game is in LA. Golden Nuggets on top again? I'll be watching; will you?

Lookin Good Restaurant

A step back in time. LG was like shutting my eyes and stepping back into one of the street corner restaurants my grandparents used to take me to way back when. A locally owned place that probably hasn't changed in a decade or two . . . or maybe three.

I drove up to Golden & Littleton to pick up an 81-year-old auntie & a 90- year-old-cousin of my Dad's . . . . . I had promised to take them to lunch and "catch-up" on family gossip.

Looking Good Restaurant was their choice. Definitely not an elegant dining experience, but very friendly with a variety of good lunch choices. Service was good and quick. We sat and sat and caught up on all the comings and goings of relatives I didn't even know I had.

Didn't get a chance to try the "cherry" thingy from the bar . . . . next time!
Besides, I may need a drink or two for more family gossip.
