The Well
Category: Lounges
Neighborhood: Hollywood
Not my usual choice for bars (stinky, smokey, cheap), but this place felt comfortable none the less. The food was about average which is pretty good for a bar. The drinks were ok, though you have to deal with the whole... "Yes I am a bartender... wait I mean an actor... well yeah I had some work lately, just did a SAG dig... oh hey wait, I have my head shot..." Type of service.. though what should I expect, it is Hollywood. One of the bartenders didn't understand what a "soda back" was, so I guess they might be new to the whole "real alchoholics keep hydrated" system.
Jukebox was alright, crowd was ok... well.. it was ok because it wasn't packed. There was your mixed bag of Hollywood whatevers, and some yuppie business man whatevers there. Not the kind of place I am going to find a date, unless they be slumming or do a credit check.
Metro Info: Right down the block from the Hollywood and Vine Red Line Station, watch out for urine on the sidewalk on the way though.
There needs to a be new category for this type of bar, let's call it "faux dive". It looks nice and comfy, and there was no obviously sticky spots on the floor, nor obviously sticky people that inhabit this place. Still though... I would rather deal with stinky, sticky, drunkards then pay $6.00 bucks for a cocktail. Yeah they have PBR.. but real alcoholics need cocktails.
The jukebox had good jams in it, if only they could all be played. For some reason you could play song 96, but not song 69....
Had some french fries, and yeah they were pretty damn good. If you have high blood pressure they might kill you though.
So yeah, great place to go if you want "dive'ish" atmosphere, without the dive characters, or cheap drinks. Though who am I to judge, the stickier and dirtier the bar the more i like them.
Metro Info: Walking distance from the Red Line's Hollywood and Vine Station.

The Chalet

We ate dinner down the street last night, and had to find out what was so special about this place. We stopped in for a couple of cocktails, and damn I get it.
The place is nice, it's clean, has mad style, yet isn't pretentious. The place was about half way full when we got there and filled up by the time we left at around 11:00. Pretty impressive for a Tuesday night.
Most of the time I love places like the chalet because of their atmosphere, but end up hating them because of the crowd. The crowd here didn't put me off. Most people were there with a group of friends and having a good time. Not the usual "sizing you up" looks, or "who are you?" looks i expect from a "hip" joint.
The low lighting was great, it makes everyone look attractive, so yeah... first date place all the way, well at least for those of us that need all the help we can get.
The jukebox had an amazing selection, and music being played was diverse from the selection. I didn't hear a repeated hit the whole time which was nice.
Only down side, while the girl bartending was damn impressive with her ability to juggle the crowd of people ordering I think she could have been utilizing her bar back a bit more. Can't the back handle cashing people out? Poor the beers? I didn't have to wait too long, and I really didn't mind watching her work, but yeah the poor guy didn't seem like he had much to do.
Metro Info: Another place in the heart of Eagle Rock on Colorado Blvd, too far from any metro line. You will have to drive, there didn't seem to be any off street parking and it was ok on a Tuesday night, but I could see parking being an issue on a Friday.

This place was authentic, the sign said serving since 1954, and when I walked in I felt surrounded by 1954. No faux authenticity contrived by some "flair" company to decorate this place.
Seating was amazing aged red booths, and nice dim lighting with some great yet sort of campy artwork on the walls. I felt like I was in a scene from Good Fella's.
The crowd was mainly older patrons that looked like they had been coming here for decades. You couldn't cast a movie better to fit in this atmosphere if you were making a movie.
At the end of the dinning area was a grand piano with a lady playing and singing. JESUS! It was great.
The food was on par, the steak I ordered rare wasn't quite rare enough but the mushrooms covering it made up for it. My partner in crime got the lasagna and I had plate envy, it looked amazing and it apparently tasted amazing. I had a Dewar's and ginger before my meal, and it was mixed perfectly, strong but not too strong.
The bar area was classic too, I could see this becoming a regular haunt for an after work drink. Not fancy, and not divey, just right.
If you have family in town, scratch the buca de whatever off the list and bring them here for a real experience.
Metro Info: Too far from the gold line or anything else. It's nestled in the center of the things to do in eagle rock so you have to drive. They do have a good amount of free of street parking in back, which is the jam.

We stopped in for lunch and sat outside. Mistake... It's on the corner of relatively busy streets. You can smell the exhaust of beaters and have to talk over the noise of some guy riding his midlife crisis Harley mobile. Other then that the outside seating was good, plenty of shade a grip of seating.
The inside reminds me of something you would see in Vegas, you couldn't not look at a big plasma screen TV if you tried. If you are one of those sports people, go for it. I'm not so I won't.
From the looks of it the lunch crowd is mainly working pro's from around the area. Though there were some special characters sitting outside that worked their way through a half dozen cocktails for lunch, that's the life.
Food was good, I had a seared ahi salad. The ahi was good, but the greens were kind of wilted, and soft. Not worth the price though there are probably better things to eat there. They serve sushi, but uhhh I dunno about sushi from a posh sports bar.
I plan on coming back at night just to see how the bar crowd is, and because they have tons of outside seating for the smokers. I have a feeling it will be middle aged men, but who knows.
Oh ya, they have underground parking at this place, kind of crazy, but should make for easy parking.
Metro Info: You can sneaker express it from the Sierra Madre Gold Line Station or the Allen Gold Line station. If it isn't your scene you can walk to the colorado too.

This places does the whole opentable thing, which is the jam. I got myself 100 open table points for the res. Someday I might get a $20.00 whatever they give out.
They have a huge bar in the front which looks pretty inviting, if i worked in downtown I could see trying to frequent it. They have a pretty nice selection of fancy cocktails. I tried out the Primero Mojito, and it was the best Mojito I have ever had, though... Yeah the difference between the best and worse Mojito I have ever had isn't that big. Booze with sugar and mint, is simple and good.
The food was good, maybe a bit pricey, but not much to fret about. The atmosphere was modern, or post-modern.. or wait I mean 1960's modern? I dunno.. It was tasteful, and not over done, and didn't seem cheap and thrown together like uhmmm yeah a room at the standard.
One downfall, the bathroom was less then pleasant. For the prices and compared to the rest of the restaurant I would have expected better. It wasn't dive bar or gas station bad but it wasn't good either.
Would I go back? Sure... I had a good time, and the food was good. Though I was kind of pissed off that when I asked for a cucumber cocktail that steph mentioned in her review ... They didn't have it! Who's the lier here?
Metro Info: This place is a couple blocks away from the 7th/Metro Red Line Station... A good way to travel and a nice walk amongst big buildings on the way.
They have a pretty good lunch menu, and surprisingly good sandwiches. Their "Italian" style french fries are really good (if you can handle how salty they are).
I wasn't interested in getting a big meal today, so I ordered a salad. Mistake, their salad was massive. I split it with a co-worker and still couldn't finish more then half of what was left. Can we all just get over the Seinfeld obsession of the "big salad". The salad was pricey too... 13 bucks for a salad... Next time I want to ask if I can get half of it for 7 bucks. They can send the rest to the starving children in Africa.
They have a bar there too, but it doesn't look like a fun place to drink. Lunch crowd is usually people that work in the area, and the dinner crowd is mainly families. I wouldn't feel right unleashing my drunk sailors vocabulary with them around.
Metro Rail Info: You could walk to it from the Sierra Madre Gold Line Station... Though I don't know why you would, there is probably food of this quality where ever you live for about the same price.

First off the produce is sub-par like all the other Von's I have ever gone to. All the fruit and veggies seem torn up and flavorless. On the flip side their selection of booze is impressive. You can get everything from Stone Ale to PBR and Sparkz in the beer aisle.
I have had some of the best and worse check out clerks here, it's spotty. Today I waited in the express line for 15min while the clerk kept running out of change. A customer finally had to break a hundred for her because the manager didn't seem to know what to do. Lame.
A big plus about this place in my book are all the "special" people that seem to frequent in or around the Von's. I got to gawk at a lady wearing a big black tshirt that went down like a skirt, with one leg in fish net stockings and the other in a solid black stocking. Life as entertainment makes me smile.
They also have a wells fargo in there so you can hit an atm or cash a check or get a new mortgage on your house.
Metro rail info? Naw, I am sure you would rather shop closer to home.
I work with a couple of hong kong ex-patriots, and let them do the ordering for us when we go here. We had 5 people that ate ourselves stuffed, with boxes of left overs, with a total bill of 40 bucks. You can't beat that.
The food is good, not your orange chicken whatever Chinese food. This is traditional Chinese comfort food. If you haven't had this kind of Chinese food you will be pleasantly surprised.
If you are a cracker like me, bring someone that knows Chinese food, it will be easier to order and select what you want.
It is also next to a snooker club, with the same name. I don't play those games of skill but if you wanted to play snooker, you could.
Metro rail info? Naw... too far from any gold line station.

It's out west so forget good parking we ended up parking in the neighborhood behind the place, finding a spot there seemed pretty miraculous in itself. Your mileage may vary.
The decorations are simply put, horrible, and obvious, well unless you are into the whole burning man thing, or ufo's or whatever. It feels like Disney's tomorrow land but on a middle school kids budget. We sat in what i guess are kitsch re-purposed seats from cars, comfy but thats about it. The music was whatever techno and it was a bit too loud and not really the jams i want to listen to while eating.
They had beer and wine, no cocktails but thats fine. So yeah then there is the food! My friends got the Earth salads and they looked amazing, I just waited for the pizza. We split a large pizza, which is actually LARGE. The cheese was amazing and fresh, all the toppings on the pizza were incredible, and the crust and sauce were popping.
I am generally not too impressed with pizza, but this was worth the drive across town, and worth dealing with the rest of environment of the restaurant.
