I hate when 5 stars are overused. Not every place you go is insanely awesome.

Microplay Video Game Stores

been going here for a few years now. they have a decent selection of games here for pretty much any system, do repairs on most systems, and their customer service has historically been good. normally i'd give this 4, maybe 5 stars, but i went in here last week to see if they would do repairs on my fc twin (dual nes/snes system) that i bought from them last year - apparently they've never even opened one up before and the person at the register seemed like they could care less (no suggestions, no help, no pointers, no thoughts). i suppose it's not too expensive of a system to repurchase, but it kind of made me feel like i got hustled.

also, prices on their nes games have skyrocketed since i last went in here. perhaps demand is going up, but still, i'm not paying more for an nes game than a used ps2 game.

Sahota Palace

Category: Indian

5 star rating

i'm somewhat of a rookie with indian cuisine (only eaten it a few times in boston, nyc, and 'cuse), but this was the best indian food that i've ever had - and one of the better meals that i've had in the 'cuse area in a while.

location = it looks the little skechy from the outside (located next to firestone auto in the dank liverpool plaza).

ambiance = the interior is decent: an open room with tables, very clean, with dim lighting. a tad on the tacky side, but things like that don't matter when the food is awesome.

menu and drink selection = a few indian beers, a few wines, mango drinks and lassis for drink selctions and the menu has a very wide variety of traditional dishes (tandoori breads, lamb, vegetarian, curry, tandoori, desserts, ect...). entrees range from $10-$15.

meal = so awesome. the complimentary flour chips and sauces (don't know the traditional name(s) of these) were so delicious and really got me pumped for my meal. the chips were really light, crispy, and a bit garlicy and spicy. and 3 sauces were excellent - 1 was an oniony, red sauce, 1 tasted like a pea and cilantro mix, and the other one was a brown, smokey sauce. these were all great. the cheese pakora (deep fried cheese with spices) was ok. the breading was excellent, but it was a little too dry for my liking. the garlic naan was amazing: really light and airy and crusty on the outside. and the chicken mango was very good: tender chicken, pieces of mango, and a sweet, tangy, and spicy sauce. big portions too. i have enough left over for another meal.

i want to go back right now.

5 stars? yes sir.

Bob's Sub Stop

5 star rating

a hidden gem and one of my top 3 favorite places for subs. every sub i've had here has been good (when i worked in the area, i was especially addicted to the chicken, russian dressing, tomato, lettuce, cheese sub... the name escapes me...). their hours are a bit funky and it's a tad on the pricey side for lunch on the go, but it's worth it when you are getting great subs with that small-town charm.

the service is extremely friendly too. my first time here i didn't know it was cash-only and i couldn't pay for my lunch. they let me come back the next day and pay for it. totally awesome.

Not a bad place for pizza. I like the gyros here (it can be hard to find decent ones in cny) and the fries were pretty good. I've heard their philly cheese steaks are great, so I'll have to try one of those on my next visit.

pros - located downtown. close to some bars and restaurants. easy parking (i found a free on-street space 1 block away). close to a metro rail stop. excellent exterior and entrances to the stadium. decent food selection (dippin dots and a moe's southwestern grill score huge points).

cons - very small merch store that is totally cramped. below average grounds crew (it looked worn out and was prepared lackadaisically prior to the game. it was a windy day but still - there was dust flying everywhere and even directly into the players and fans eyes on some occasions). the out of town scoreboard was painful to read (it's a small screen that cycles through all mlb and milb games and takes forever to see specific game). the "main club level" seats are too far away from the field (i know the ballpark was built with the intention of landing an mlb team, but this takes away from the intimacy that makes minor league games so great). and lastly a very blase crowd (take it from a chiefs fan - even if you have a dreadful team there's no reason why you still can't clap, cheer, and heckle).

overall, it was a nice experience and the ballpark is in a superb location, but it misses on the little things that make minor league baseball fun.

Papaya

probably the best dining experience i've had in new york state outside of nyc. the interior is very hip and contemporary, has excellent lighting, a large amount of seating, and is located right on one of the main drags for getting your drink on in downtown buffalo (chippewa street). the food and drinks were both excellent. i opted for a caribbean martini (tasty and very strong!), shrimp tempura roll (sooo good - very fresh ingredients and honestly some of the best sushi that i've ever had), and as a main course the papaya fresh catch (a mahi-mahi style fish... the name escapes me... it was great. nice and tender - topped with a roasted red pepper basil relish and an addictive spicy coconut sauce).

overall, just a great experience. great service, great food, great location, and great vibe. just a heads up - it's a tad on the pricier side on yelp's "$$" rating scale. average entree ranges from roughly $18-$25.

The Museum of the Earth

4 star rating

i can't believe that i went to college at ic and never realized that this museum was here. it was excellent. really interesting displays of dinosaurs, trilobites, and extinct animals. very well done galleries too. i think the whole thing may be a bit too mature of a subject for 5 year-olds to really comprehend and get a grasp on, but they would probably enjoy the giant t-rex skeleton head and such.

my one critique is that i thought that it could have provided a bit more information on darwin himself than what was actually there, but i still enjoyed the museum none the less. i'd say the whole thing can be done in about an hour.

as a young adult, i enjoyed it way better than the science center. AND the museum of the earth was free on this particular sunday. score!

The Pour House

upstairs gets 3 stars. personally, it usually gets a little too crowded for me. despite the long bar, it usually takes forever to get a simple g&t. and if all the seats at the bar are taken, you're kind of s.o.l.

downstairs gets 4 stars. it's a little more low-key. there's no windows so it almost feels like you're in some sort of underground cave. it's a square bar (quasi-tiki none the less), so there is plenty of room chill out and to order drinks.

i haven't had the food in quite a while, but i prefer going here on the off-peak hours (weekend mornings) as it's probably one of the better places to get a pub-style brunch in boston.

best fried seafood i've ever had. it even beats most places that i've been to in new england (in my opinion). great fish sandwiches, awesome haddock, good coleslaw, and some of the best fries in central new york.

they have strange hours and it's take out only (there are no tables to sit down and eat at). the place is very small and there's usually a line of people  heading out the door. SO worth waiting in line for though.

a good location for a hospital and friendly staff members (all over the building). however, my family member's room definitely needed a good cleaning. also, some of the nurses and bedside aids were a bit loud during my visits - which kind of defeats the purpose of letting your patients rest.
