Cafe Nouveau

The kind of place to take your mom on mothers day, or your sweetheart for brunch on the way to Santa Barbara for the weekend (that's what we did). The parking could use some help, but the food and service was delightful.

An old Ventura house turned into a cafe, this little gem is just the spot for a breakfast/lunch/brunch. We were sat within 5 minutes on a Saturday morning at a seat near the window by the entrance. We ordered a bree and papaya quessadilla and the BBQ chicken salad. They were both very good. Odd to put fruit in a quesadilla, but it tasted good to me. We also had a very strong Mimosa. The glass of iced tea was humungous. With the meal came a nice cornbread blueberry muffin and then after the meal they served these yummy little muffins with a creamy topping that left us with a very good taste in our mouths.

You can put a hula skirt on a burger, slap on some lip stick and play some hawaiian music, but it's still a burger. Throw in some tacos and some salads, some beer and some shakes and BAM, you've got Islands. TVs with surfing and skateboarding stuff are all over as well as Tiki and surf board decorations. Your table looks kinda like a surf board too. For kids, they got the usual kids meals, but you can sub out french fries for carrots and applesauce. They also have pretty cool kids menus/activity books that kept me, err, the kids entertained.

It was neat at first, but the novelty has worn off. A few things have turned us off lately. The last few times we've been there, the speakers weren't working right and it sounded horrible, the movies they were showing weren't good for little kids to watch, the employees seemed to be out of it or not care about the place. The froyo tasted OK though and the kids enjoyed it. I'm just not that into it anymore.

Wow and double WOW. This place is great. The best frozen yogurt experience I've ever had. Better than Penguins even. Here, you are in control of everything the whole time. This beats punkberry by a mile.

You get a cup, fill it with whatever mix of flavored frozen yogurt you want and then add whatever toppings you want. You are in control, you decide everything, it's that simple. They weigh it and then you pay. You can get as much of anything as you want. They let you try all of them too. My only gripe is that they give you such a large cup that you end up getting more than you really need. But really, you can get as little or as much as you want. I halfway filled two of their smaller cups and left paying $8. I can picture people coming in with $5 and going back and forth weighing and then adding until it gets up to $5. The place is painted bright and the staff are very friendly. I even met the owner. Very nice. For anyone who wants to be in control of your fro-yo, this is the place to eat.

If you like it when a cute, friendly girl serves you an ice-cold schooner of beer while you watch sports and chow on some delicious burgers and fries, then this is the place for you. Ever the popular place for locals at lunch, Cronies is also a great place to watch the game too. I don't go to sports bars very often, but when I need my fix, I'll come here again.

Stopped here with the kids on the way back home from camping at Refugio. Nice little MickeyDs. Sports memorabelia everywhere, friendly staff and nice bathrooms. The kids were so tired they started to fall asleep while they were eating. Food was as expected. That's all I'll say about that.

You're in, you're out. Bada-Bing Bada-Boom.

There's no mulling over what you want here. You come for lunch, you stand in line and  the line moves fast. You better know what you want before you get to the tortilla guy or you risk having a 10 person pileup behind you, kind of like those check-card commercials. Having been there before for dinner, I knew what to order, but lunch is much more fast paced.

The menu is simple, almost like a mexican In-n-Out: Burritos, tacos, fajitas; made with chicken, steak, carnitas or veggetarian. They'll make it however you want, you just tell them what to do with the ingredients they have. And do it fast cause the line is moving. Oh crap, what kind of salsa,....um.... Hot!  No more choices please, just wrap the damn thing up and let me outta here!

Whew, I made it. Back in the car where I could catch my breath, I tasted this fat handfull of a chicken burrito I ordered. The chicken was tasty, the rice I could have done without, but it filled me up quickly. The "Hot" salsa wasn't that hot. If it's hot, I get hiccups, I wasn't even close to hiccupping. It tasted like tabasco to me. The Pico de Gallo looked fresh, I should have gotten that. I know from past visits that the chicken is a little too spicy for kids so don't include it in a quesadilla. I liked it though. The tortillas were good quality and the service, although fast, was actually pretty good.

Thick, juicy, warm and pink inside. These are some of the adjectives that come to mind when I think about their steaks. The taste is tremendous and the feeling in your mouth makes you want to smile after each bite. My mouth is watering right now thinking about it. I don't go here very often, once in a blue moon really, but this is the steak you judge all other steaks against. Served with beautiful green asparagus and tasty mashed potatoes you can't go wrong. I can't wait for them to build one near me in Thousand Oaks.

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market

I've been here once and I like it and don't like it. It's a supermarket like Ralphs/Vons/Albertsons but it's also got some healthier options like Whole Foods/Trader Joes. For example there is a box of fruit loops but then there's some Trader Joe's looking brand of healthy loops. The selection of different types of items is weird: they don't have every type of an item but just a few select ones. Prices are reasonable and in some cases cheaper than the other grocery stores in the area. The things I did like are the sampling booth in the back, where I had some delicious pieces of burrito and the self-check outs. Also their selection of ready to make meals for the oven or microwave are nice. These are the things that regular grocery stores need more of.

All Things Tea

So you like tea? Well let me tell you. I enjoy me a good cup of tea at least once a day. If you're a real tea snob, you know that you have to use loose leaf tea to brew the perfect cup. You also know that you need good quality water at just the right temperature.  But where do you get the tea and where do you get the right equiptment to handle loose leaf tea? I've bought stuff online and even been to "Teahala" (mispelled purposefully) in the mall but nothing beats this place yet.

Recently opened, this is a very personable little tea shop with huge tins of tea on the shelves, a beautiful granite countertop and everything that has to do with tea. Donna, the owner,  takes pride in her work and will find just the right cup of tea for you. My wife told them what types of flavours I liked and Donna found just the right ones for me. I went back myself to buy some tea for my mom and enjoyed smelling several teas and trying some of their samples. They are extrememly nice here and I look forward to restocking my tea tins soon. I've enjoyed my tea every day because of them. I've also seen coupons in the local papers and mailers. Well done All Things Tea.
