A hidden gem off the beaten path in Menlo Park, selling everything from seeds to gigantic trees. Everything is well-organized and well-labelled and the selection is stunning. Support a local business and shop here instead of OSH or Home Depot!
Huge hardware store with great selection that is a no-brainer alternative to Home Depot. You will never have trouble finding someone to help you as the store is very well staffed and the staff is friendly almost to the point that I wonder if they are medicated (only joking). I believe that they must treat their employees well because everyone seems happy to work there. Support a local business! They are an ACE hardware, but ACE is a co-op and each store is independently-owned and there is nothing cookie-cutter about this place.
A pharmacy the way it should be. Instead of a giant store like Longs or Walgreens that carries 90% crap that has nothing to do with health, Maximart is a small operation that does what pharmacies should do: fill prescriptions and sell health-related products. If you want a great pharmacy where they will come to know you by name and bend over backwards to meet your needs, this is the place to go. Support a local business and go to Maximart!
I could spend hours at a time in this wonderful store. They basically sell almost everything you could possibly need to turn your house into a green-friendly home. This includes: clothing, beds, cleaning supplies, flooring, paints and stains, carpets and rugs, countertops, office supplies, kitchen supplies, and general household products.
I'm renovating my townhouse in Santa Cruz, and I'm buying beautiful countertops (made from recycled glass), wood floors (sustainable wood with low VOCs), paint, stain, and pretty much everything else I need. The staff is outstanding in its knowledge about environmentally-friendly building and is an essential resource to any homeowner or contractor wanting to learn about casting aside the ways of the past and looking towards a greener future.
The building materials section is almost like an art gallery as the products are just so gorgeous. It's great to go to a store where everything looks so beautiful instead of the usual experience of hunting around to find the one thing that you like in a sea of crappy or ugly or toxic products.

I can't believe I never found this place until recently, but this is a phenomenal pet store. If you care about what you feed yourself, why not care about what you feed your pet? Here you can find real pet food, not crap filled with meat by-products, fillers, preservatives, and other ingredients you can't pronounce.
They also have a great selection of environmentally-friendly pet toys and many other products for dogs, cats, bunnies, birds, and so on. The staff is exceeding friendly and knowledgeable and after one visit, we will never go to Petsmart or Petco again.

By far the best grocery store I've found on the Peninsula and a stellar alternative to Whole Foods for both grocery and health/beauty products. The store is locally-owned and has very high standards for carrying the very best in local and organic products (locally sourced products are nicely labelled on the shelves). The staff is also knowledgeable and friendly and very responsive to requests to carry new products.
Between the Mountain View Farmers Market and Country Sun, you can banish Whole Foods from your life.

Great little garden supply store and nursery with very knowledgeable and friendly staff that are a great resource for organic gardening. They are not only a place to buy gardening supplies and plants, but a genuine education center to learn sustainable gardening practices.
Hands down, the best kitchen supply store I've even seen (and I've lived in a lot of different places). If you don't live in the Santa Cruz area, drop by on the weekend sometime and check this place out. Not only does it offer an amazing selection of high-quality products, but the store is well-staffed with very knowledgeable and friendly people that really know kitchen and cooking supplies. If they don't have something in stock, they will special order pretty much anything for you.
Skip Williams-Sonoma and go to a place with a soul instead. Don't let the name fool you. It's not an intimidating place only for professional chefs or only high-end products. They have a great selection of products across price ranges, unless of course you only want to buy cheap crap that will fall apart within a year and then maybe the place is not for you. :)

Gelato Mania - CLOSED

Very good gelato place with a good selection of fruity and non-fruity gelatos. They have outdoor and indoor seating, featuring these somewhat hilariously huge booths that could fit like a dozen people. There really needs to be a separate Yelp rating system for how cute the staff is. This place ranges between 4 and 5 stars for the cute guys on staff. :)
Chocolate is our favorite restaurant in downtown Santa Cruz. It's basically a European-style caf with a very unique menu with selections that try to be as organic as possible. Our favorites include the pasta rosettes, the vegetarian caesar salad, and the cashew-curry salmon. Also, the hot chocolate is probably the best I've ever had. They have a half dozen varieties that all basically taste like a chocolate bar melted into a glass.
There is a HUGE selection of really incredible desserts. We haven't really had anything bad, but particularly like the chocolate ecstacy cake, the gelato (although gelatomania down the street has a wider selection), and the tiramisu.
There are some downsides, but nothing to really keep me from giving 5 stars. One downside is that the entree menu doesn't change often so if you visit regularly, you can eventually get bored with the selection. In the past, the staff has been a bit slow, but in the past 6 months or so, the service has generally been good. It's also a bit on the pricey side, especially if you get an appetizer and dessert. It's easly to spend $50 for 2 people if you're not careful.
