The bartenders are efficient and nice although I'd say calling them friendly is taking it a step too far. And if you've had a little too much to drink they'll fire you up a pizza. Nothing gourmet, I think they are frozen, but when you've been drinking they are damn tasty.
One bit of advice, watch out for the ring game or you may get hit in the head.

Don's Tavern, a.k.a. Don's Mixed Drinks, is sort of hit or miss with me, but I give it four stars for 2 reasons. One is it is more often a hit than a miss. Two is because it's so freaking close to my house.
The reasons it is a miss include the fact that it is primarily men, which may sound good, but occasionally there is this one guy there that doesn't believe I can't live without him in my life. He apparently does this to most girls there so it's not that I'm special. But, he will just follow me around, trying to strike up bad conversations until I finally give in and leave.
But! It's a hit because it is friendly and cheap, the jukebox is pretty good and shuffleboard is free. Plus if your a girl that's going and you bring along a boy everyone leaves you alone. Sort of like pick-up avoidance insurance.
I like going during the weekdays, too because the weekend crowd isn't really up my alley usually and it tends to get pretty crowded.

Sir Nicholas and I had dinner here the other evening and he order chicken fried steak while I had a raspberry vinaigrette chicken. My dish cost $17 and came with roasted potatoes (which were the best part of the food itself) and steamed veggies. The chicken was pounded super flat and completely drenched in a weird sauce that was the raspberry vinaigrette. Nick's dish was served with the same veggies and mashed potatoes that were quite possibly the blandest potatoes that have ever crossed the threshold into my mouth. But, the table next to us all order burgers that came out looking and smelling quite delicious so we'll try that next time.
And I'll likely go back because of our server who was so very awesome. He had perfect timing, great demeanor, and just really made our experience enjoyable enough to warrant a return visit.
I should say that I was at Tahona once it made that switch that so many Boulder places do from being a restaurant to being a nightclub. It's an odd phenomenon, but around 9 or 10 so many places on Pearl Street move their tables out and a DJ in and get the party started.
This was the last stop on our bachelor/bachelorette party and it provided just what we needed - infused tequila for more margarita drinking, a dance floor to practice the "Stanky Legg" for the upcoming wedding reception dance, and an upbeat vibe to counter the sleepiness all the alcohol in our systems was creating.
The bartenders were really friendly, serving us immediately. And, wow. Um, they were good looking. I just hope Coach doesn't read this review.

Catacombs Bar
Categories: Dive Bars, Pool Halls, Music Venues
We went back recently and Pac-Man and the drinks remain the same, but Catacombs is all bright and redone so it looks kind of respectable. While I appreciate the owners making what can only be seen as improvements in most people's eyes I shed a little tear for the old Catacombs. I doubt I'd spend half as much time here if I lived in Boulder now. But, it's still a good college bar.

So, I asked for quotes and catalogs on the things they did. While we ultimately didn't go with their designs I'd highly recommend using them if you have the need and the means. They are so professional and polite I can only imagine they'd make any event special.
I definitely recommend the cucumber and seaweed salad. Delicious! And if you're into specialty rolls try the Z-#9 roll. It's a little pricey, but worth every delectable bite. And finish your meal with their mochi. The day I went they had chocolate espresso and I think it was the best mochi I've ever had.

The people that were here the day I came were super friendly and offered up wine, beer and water for a nominal fee. There weren't any snacks, but Zona's Tamales are just across the street if you find yourself in need of a bite to eat. And I give a bonus star for free garage parking just behind the theater.
The Boulder Rio has an awesome rooftop patio that didn't exist when I went to college here, but makes me wish it had. The margaritas are strong as always so if you find yourself unable to handle the harshness of regular, but not wanting the sweetness of strawberry do what I do and order the strawberry light. This is a blend of regular and strawberry and tastes better than the two original versions.
If you're going to eat I'd suggest the guacamole or queso. But, at the Rio it's best to stick with the simplest of dishes. You know the ones that have been Americanized and so are edible, but not the deliciousness you can find on South Federal.
All in all this is a decent place to catch an afternoon buzz or begin a very serious night of drinking.

We did manage to buy some very delicious goodies though, bread, spinach, tomatoes, giant zucchini and squashes and we ate them throughout the week with pure enjoyment. So, maybe I'll take the advice here and try it on a Wednesday. But, never again will I try the Saturday market.
