Cherry Creek Farmer's Market

Category: Farmers Market
Neighborhoods: Southeast, Cherry Creek

3 star rating

Hmmm... I think this Farmers Market is a little too jam-packed and pushy for me to really enjoy. While I appreciated a lot of their stands and how friendly the workers were, the people that shove and run over your toes with strollers and let their dogs poop in front of you while you try to decide what kind of mushrooms you want to buy just make this market not for me. I know that is unfortunate for the farmers there, but such is life. And all of these things happened to me during a 45-minute stop at the market.

We did manage to buy some very delicious goodies though, bread, spinach, tomatoes, giant zucchini and squashes and we ate them throughout the week with pure enjoyment. So, maybe I'll take the advice here and try it on a Wednesday. But, never again will I try the Saturday market.

Not surprisingly, this place feels like you're in a garage. And that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's long and narrow with garage doors on both ends that they can open up to our lovely summer nights. There are plenty of tables for sitting and chatting, a Wii for playing games, a pool table, and even naked lady photohunt, one of my all time favorite bar games.

The bartenders are efficient and nice although I'd say calling them friendly is taking it a step too far. And if you've had a little too much to drink they'll fire you up a pizza. Nothing gourmet, I think they are frozen, but when you've been drinking they are damn tasty.

One bit of advice, watch out for the ring game or you may get hit in the head.

Don's has opened up their new expanded space and it's awesome. There is a garage door that opens to the street. It's much more spacious. And the bathrooms are no longer in the middle of the bar.

Plus, they serve Firefly Sweet Tea vodka. It's heavenly.

Don's Tavern, a.k.a. Don's Mixed Drinks, is sort of hit or miss with me, but I give it four stars for 2 reasons. One is it is more often a hit than a miss. Two is because it's so freaking close to my house.

The reasons it is a miss include the fact that it is primarily men, which may sound good, but occasionally there is this one guy there that doesn't believe I can't live without him in my life. He apparently does this to most girls there so it's not that I'm special. But, he will just follow me around, trying to strike up bad conversations until I finally give in and leave.

But! It's a hit because it is friendly and cheap, the jukebox is pretty good and shuffleboard is free. Plus if your a girl that's going and you bring along a boy everyone leaves you alone. Sort of like pick-up avoidance insurance.

I like going during the weekdays, too because the weekend crowd isn't really up my alley usually and it tends to get pretty crowded.

Cherokee Dining On 12th Avenue

I think Cherokee has a lovely atmosphere and awesome service. But, my suggestion is if you go to eat stay with the casual side of the menu - burgers, etc because I don't think the quality of the entrees is worth the price you're paying. With that said, the $6 split of Freixenet is definitely worth it.

Sir Nicholas and I had dinner here the other evening and he order chicken fried steak while I had a raspberry vinaigrette chicken. My dish cost $17 and came with roasted potatoes (which were the best part of the food itself) and steamed veggies. The chicken was pounded super flat and completely drenched in a weird sauce that was the raspberry vinaigrette. Nick's dish was served with the same veggies and mashed potatoes that were quite possibly the blandest potatoes that have ever crossed the threshold into my mouth. But, the table next to us all order burgers that came out looking and smelling quite delicious so we'll try that next time.

And I'll likely go back because of our server who was so very awesome. He had perfect timing, great demeanor, and just really made our experience enjoyable enough to warrant a return visit.

Tahona Tequila Bistro

Hello infused tequilas. You taste so good once you hit my lips.

I should say that I was at Tahona once it made that switch that so many Boulder places do from being a restaurant to being a nightclub. It's an odd phenomenon, but around 9 or 10 so many places on Pearl Street move their tables out and a DJ in and get the party started.

This was the last stop on our bachelor/bachelorette party and it provided just what we needed - infused tequila for more margarita drinking, a dance floor to practice the "Stanky Legg" for the upcoming wedding reception dance, and an upbeat vibe to counter the sleepiness all the alcohol in our systems was creating.

The bartenders were really friendly, serving us immediately. And, wow. Um, they were good looking. I just hope Coach doesn't read this review.

Catacombs Bar

I used to hang out in Catacombs a lot when I lived in Boulder. There were a few reasons for this. The first is they have fast Ms. Pac-Man and air hockey in the same room. This equals hours of entertainment for me. Second they had drinks specials that seemed to be aimed at getting me good and drunk for a fraction of other bars' cost. Third, it was dark and divey and kind of grimey. I'm a dive bar girl at heart so between this place and the Sundowner I was set in Boulder.

We went back recently and Pac-Man and the drinks remain the same, but Catacombs is all bright and redone so it looks kind of respectable. While I appreciate the owners making what can only be seen as improvements in most people's eyes I shed a little tear for the old Catacombs. I doubt I'd spend half as much time here if I lived in Boulder now. But, it's still a good college bar.

This company specifically makes balloon designs from arches to animals for your parties and events. I called them to try and rent a helium tank and they were so nice they referred me to an outside vendor that would be more affordable. How is that for customer service?

So, I asked for quotes and catalogs on the things they did. While we ultimately didn't go with their designs I'd highly recommend using them if you have the need and the means. They are so professional and polite I can only imagine they'd make any event special.

Sushi Zanmai

Private rooms, delicious sushi, and karaoke? What else do you need? I had dinner at Sushi Zanmai recently with a bachelor/bachelorette celebration. While it was a tame celebration, the dinner was fantastic. Our server was super accommodating in allowing us all to have separate checks from the beginning so that we could pay for our own tabs without all the confusion at the end. And even though he warned our sushi might arrive very far apart it didn't and we all ate around the same time.

I definitely recommend the cucumber and seaweed salad. Delicious! And if you're into specialty rolls try the Z-#9 roll. It's a little pricey, but worth every delectable bite. And finish your meal with their mochi. The day I went they had chocolate espresso and I think it was the best mochi I've ever had.

I didn't even know this theater existed until last week when I attended the Fresh film screening. Apparently they do lots of plays, photography exhibits, poetry slams and so on. It's a cute theater, a bit on the smaller side, but that adds to its charm. There isn't a bad seat in the house.

The people that were here the day I came were super friendly and offered up wine, beer and water for a nominal fee. There weren't any snacks, but Zona's Tamales are just across the street if you find yourself in need of a bite to eat. And I give a bonus star for free garage parking just behind the theater.

The Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant

Category: Mexican

They only have happy hour from 3 -5? Is this true of all Rios? If so that's ludicrous. Who can enjoy happy hour at those times? I mean college students in Boulder, sure. But, what about the workingman or woman? At least give us until 6 so we can have false hope of happy cheap drinks. Geesh.

The Boulder Rio has an awesome rooftop patio that didn't exist when I went to college here, but makes me wish it had. The margaritas are strong as always so if you find yourself unable to handle the harshness of regular, but not wanting the sweetness of strawberry do what I do and order the strawberry light. This is a blend of regular and strawberry and tastes better than the two original versions.

If you're going to eat I'd suggest the guacamole or queso. But, at the Rio it's best to stick with the simplest of dishes. You know the ones that have been Americanized and so are edible, but not the deliciousness you can find on South Federal.

All in all this is a decent place to catch an afternoon buzz or begin a very serious night of drinking.
