Freddy's Frozen Custard

The fries were really skinny. Tasted ok, but they were really hard to eat. It was actually kind of frustrating. Too much work to get a few fries in the mouth. I like the steak fries at Red Robin, where you get lots of potato with minimum effort. Freddy's fries were the opposite.
My veggie burger tasted ok, but the combo was around $7.25 (fries and drink). Pretty pricey IMO.
On the plus side, the frozen custard which was really good. I think in the future we might return for this, but get the dinner somewhere else.
For other recreation, there are several trails throughout the park and also a small fishing pond. The water itself was murky and uninviting, but there were at least some fish in it. There is a nice road that winds it's way between Bastrop and Buescher parks, which is nice to drive on, but would be even better to bike on.
My only complaint with Bastrop State Park is that it close enough to Hwy 71.that you can hear the cars traveling past at night. We'll be back to the park for daytrips (bbq, swimming, and fishing) since it is only about an hour away from Austin. Recommended!

I had been wanting to visit Los Reyes for a while now. I have been wanting to go to a Mexican restaurant that reminds me of my favorite one back in my hometown growing up. I guess you could say it would be California-style Mexican? Anyhow, we finally made it to Los Reyes with a coupon for free queso in pocket. I really don't care for queso, and it's usually a red-flag for me when I see it on a restaurant's menu, but hey, it was free from the local neighborhood newspaper.
Los Reyes has both TexMex and Mexican food on the menu. I barely looked at the TexMex page, but quickly saw that on the Mexican food page, a photo of their Carne Asada plate. Then my eyes focused in on one of my favorite words: Carnitas. Of course I had to order that. Not only is it my favorite, but also a good indicator of how the rest of the dishes would be. My wife ordered the Carne Asada plate, and the kids got some fried shrimp and fries.
While waiting for the main dishes, we munched on the complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were ordinary, but the salsas were really good. One was like a puree, and just a tiny bit of spiciness (good for kids), but the other salsa was chunky and had a lot of heat. It was excellent. The queso was ok, another good one for the kids. We also ordered a "Mexico" margarita, which has the three layers one for each color on the Mexican flag. It came in a huge glass goblet. You need two hands to pick it up. It was a pretty potent margarita, and was enough for my wife and I.
The food arrived and I was pleasantly surprised. There was a good amount of Carnitas, served with rice and beans. The meat was great! Tender pieces of pork, with the outsides a bit crispy from being fried. It tasted excellent. On a separate dish came a large amount of guacamole, not-very-spicy jalapeos, and pico de gallo. I chose corn tortillas, and ended up making four packed tacos, and still had plenty of food left on my plate.
The Carne Asada was also tasty. The meat was tender and flavorful, and also came on a plate with rice and beans, plus pico, guac, and a roasted pepper.
The shrimp and fries plate was just ok, but good for the kids. Not sure if adults would like it, as it was very basic.
The service at Los Reyes was great. The staff were all friendly, and the food was served quickly. The restaurant was very clean and there was no wait on a Tuesday evening. I'd say it was about a third full,.
I'm looking forward to trying their other dishes, although it will be hard to not order Carnitas again!
If you want a taste of an authentic izakaya restaurant, Mr. Max is for you.

The service was nice and friendly, but you could tell they were still in training mode. When asked if we'd like more chips for our running-low basket, instead of bringing more chips or a new basket and switching with the old one, they just took the old one (which still had 1/4 left) away, and we waited a couple minutes to get more chips, leaving us with nothing to munch on. Also, when they brought us the credit card bill, they didn't leave a pen. Just little things that I expect will be remedied with some on-the-job training, and nothing to give only two stars for. But the food is another story.
The menu is a mix of burgers, steaks, tex-mex, and home style comfort food. My wife got a mushroom burger, and she thought it was pretty good. The pattie was fresh and tasty, and there were plenty of toppings. The bun was kind of a sweet roll, which should really be an option. She said it wasn't just a sweet bun, but more like a Hawaiian sweet roll as far as sweetness goes. Would have been nice to have the option to get a more regular bun. As a side, she got the fried okra, which was ok.
Our kids got their kids' plates, and while the chicken fingers were decent, the bean and cheese tacos were not. The corn tortilla was dry as could be, the beans were tasteless and cheese seemed like it was cut in strips from a one-pound block. It also wasn't melted. I had a couple bites, and the whole thing was like cardboard.
For my entree, I had a burrito, with the spinach and mushroom filling. It was topped with chili con queso, and another chili sauce. For one thing, the burrito was huge. But when I dug into it, the filling oozed out and didn't look very appetizing. I think the spinach was actually spinach dip, like you would have with crusty bread. It tasted way too processed. Also inside the burrito were small mushrooms, a layer of the tasteless beans and a layer of Mexican-style rice. I ate more of the burrito, but then had to squeeze out the spinach-dip because there was just too much of the stuff. I was hoping I would be left with a regular bean n cheese burrito, but it ended up just like my son's taco: tasteless. I'm not lying when I say that anything from the menu at Taco Bell would have been better, and at a fraction of the cost. I never put tabasco on the food I get at restaurants (except Chipotle), but I resorted to the green chile tabasco in hopes of salvaging what was left of the burrito. It did not work.
On the plus side, I also ordered a side of a "Cheesy potato casserole". This was actually tasty, and I ate all of it. It was more like cheesy home-fries.
I really hope this restaurant refines their menu a bit. I honestly think that the recipes are of bachelor-level cooking. My burrito recipe could have been, "combine 1 pint HEB spinach dip, 1 can refried beans, roll in tortilla, cover with scoop of queso sauce". Definitely not something that I'd serve in a restaurant and charge $9 for.
I feel kind of bad writing this negative review, because the staff and owner seemed really nice. But the food was really not good.
