it's 2am and you're walking out of the crescent. you've just spent a wonderful evening with many of your closest friends, drinking, singing, dancing and drinking.
also drinking.
booze, i mean. y'know, getting... oh, what's the word the kids are using these days... CRUNK. (is that still en vogue? i think it might be PWNED now, i saw that somewhere.)
you're telling your friends about how awesome it was in New York when you stayed out dancing til 4am and could still grab a bite to eat when you were through. you long for that life here in this beautiful city, if only just for the next hour.
you stumble onward up the block debating whether or not your stomach is ready for a slice of pie from that shady joint on Broadway (y'know, the one inside a convenience store), but you know it's in dire need of something or tomorrow morning is gonna be hell.
you round the corner and see a LiteBrite-like sign dazzling your intoxicated senses with it's neon rhythms- well, mostly just the one sense... y'know, sight.
...and the sign proclaims thus: OPEN
could it be? have the karaoke gods bestowed this special gift upon thee for this one hour? cautiously you stumble through the door and approach the host with your query,
"until what time are you open, good sir?"
(at least, this is what you intend to say in your mind, it actually comes out more of a booming, "what TIME 'splace opentull?")
"we're open 'til three."
you nod solemnly as you turn to look at your friends, all now making their way through the door.
"they're open 'til three."
FIN
...
Epilogue:
the cheese bread was really effin' good. the plain pie was a tad cheesier than our particular style, but the thick-ass crust sure did help to soak up some of that boozin'! the server was a little shaky getting our order in line at first, but everything came out quickly and correctly. the two salads ordered were both declared delicious by all.
overall review: 'spretty goodwin yr drunk, but i'll still stick with Pagliacci for my pizza needs.

now i know you're a doughnut shop and cafe first- and second-most, but we regulars and neighbors always appreciated your tasty options for lunch on those afternoons when a table became our office and there was work to do.
being a pescatarian, i can only speak for the tomato/mozzarella and the tuna sandwiches. having tried each new option, it is clear: the breads are unsatisfactory- the wheat plain, the focaccia starchy. the added slice of cheese to the tuna- a cold cheddar triangle which cannot be melted by any device in your shop... truly uninspired.
i know times are tough and you're looking to find more cost efficient solutions, but with solutions this bland and unappealing, you might as well save yourself the cost of sandwiches altogether. i'm done buying them.
still, your delicious caffeine and cake creations grip my very soul (which is not to mention your delightful and gorgeous staff). so, yes, i will be back. regularly. but consider your income $12 a week shorter.

i am one of the fortunate souls that can claim this as their closest neighborhood cafe and i'm so thrilled about it.
the blueberry/cinnamon donut is teeth-rotting heaven.
the mochas are consistently delicious, utilizing dilletante's ephemer chocolate.
while it is a quiet place with lots of folks keying away at their laptops, headphones on, i've never felt any external pressure to be quiet. the music was recently switched to Musac, but it still manages to be mostly listenable and is never too loud.
the wi-fi signal is consistently strong. the staff is always friendly and attractive.
i love this place. LOVE IT.

during round three of our card game (in which i got eight cards right, basically making me a medium), the "psychic" proceeded to tell the three clients that she was going to have major, personal surgery soon. it was mildly awkward, we felt, but we continued to wait...
until we heard her say to the "single" gentleman, "there's more i would like to tell you, but there are too many eavesdroppers in the room..." (my friend and i taking a strong hint, AS WE WAITED OUR GD TURN) "so maybe we should meet at Starbucks." (!?!?) a silent moment passes. then, "now i'm not saying we should have sex. i'm not implying that, but i'm putting it out there."
at that, my friend and i grabbed our bags and got the fuck out of there.

honestly, this might be the best karaoke experience in town. first, there are two easily distinguishable sets of song binders: one set organized by artist's first name, the other by song title. in the artist book (my preference), the organization is made even more helpful with a bolding of each artist's name on their first song, making it super-easy to scan the pages for your favorites! it was a nice touch that i'd never seen before and will cause a loss of a star for every other karaoke bar without, henceforth!
the song selection was not quite as wide as the Crescent, but there were some options i'd never seen elsewhere. (case in point: Rebel Rebel, which i rocked the first chance i got, followed spectacularly with Christy A's rendition of Let's Dance ... back to back Bowie!)
on this particular evening, there were two DJs. as we learned a few songs in, it was the first night for one of them. he started the night off for us with a spectacular version of Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, complete with a little growling and whistle outro. at his station throughout the rest of the night, the man danced, laughed, sang along and generally brought the fun up a notch with introductions and what.
the stage was great. not only was it positioned in such a way that one feels like a real headlining act, but the speaker and amp setup was positioned just right, creating a hearty sound throughout the space. i could hear myself quite well on stage and knew that the levels were just as good on the other side. seriously, karaoke has never sounded this good.
moreover, in addition to the always-a-great-idea smoke machine, there was an occasional laser light show beamed on singers as well as a machine that shot foam out over the dance floor. seriously. it was like a gd flaming lips show up there!
the regulars i met here were all outstanding, not only in quality of performance, but in the general sense of plain-ol' great folk. one dude in particular deserves a shout out: Jon Wayne Brown! he not only kicks out the early-country/rock/abilly jams, he also carries the world's largest zippo lighter and captures karaoke sets for youtube: http://www.youtube.com... ... great to meet you jon!
take it from me folks, i love a karaoke. hula hula is where it's at.
down another flight and again a locked door. by the third floor down, we started to get the hint.
we continued down trying to find an unlocked door, thinking that surely one of them would open- what use was a stairwell with only locked doors?! at some point, we reached a sign saying that the 40th floor was open, so we trudged our way down.
absolutely exhausted and laughing at the sheer ridiculousness of this whole thing, we reached the 40th floor. sure enough the door opened! but behind that was ANOTHER DOOR...
LOCKED.
we could not believe this.we had just walked down 34 flights of stairs with the knowledge that it would be over then. we had long ago given up the idea of looking out one of the windows.
so down we went... another 40 floors... occasionally we laughed about it, but for the most part we just agonized over the pain we were all feeling deep in our legs. there were many breaks, during which we simply looked at one another, shaking our heads, knowing how foolish this all was.
when we reached the bottom floor, i half expected the door to be locked. by this time we had spent over a half hour in this stairwell and it felt like an eternity. when i opened the door only to find another behind it, just like on the 40th floor, i just about had a nervous breakdown. lucky for us, door #2 actually opened this time, and passing through it, my friends and i all cheered and had a good laugh. i cannot imagine what that must have looked like from an outside observer.
IN CONCLUSION, this place looks freaking awesome in our skyline AND provides a spectacular view, if you are willing to pay for it, but do not enter the stairwell. thank you for your time.

the staff was great- friendly and hip, which was good because i didn't have the internet to tell me where i needed to be. i was directed to some fine eats and the best punk club i've ever been to (http://www.yelp.com/bi...).
the adjoining restaurant served delicious food til 2am, and i caught an AMAZING show in their lounge (KINSKI, Subarachnoid Space, Lickity) and enjoyed a few cigarettes by the fire outside- much appreciated on a night with snow!
i slept very comfortably and warmed up quickly with the big space heater.
i don't do hotels often, but the price seemed reasonable for the location and quality. recommended.

as far as a punk rock festival goes, i could not imagine a better venue. i danced my ass off, got right up close to a few bands, had 3 different rooms to drink, each with a different vibe. i had a blast!
