Flavors Indian Restaurant

Categories: Indian, Pakistani

5 star rating
 Update - 6/2/2009
Can't believe it's been so long since I reviewed this place.

We've been back several times and Flavors has locked in its place as our favorite for Indian in this area. That's largely due to the consistency of the food and service. Every trip we leave with a smile, some leftover food, and a satisfyingly full and contented feeling. (Not sure what happened with Ayanna's experience, as we've had one or two slower nights, but never really bad or rude service.)

We've skipped around the menu and have our favorites, but there are so many choices there, we go back and forth between favorites and trying new dishes. Either way, we've not been disappointed.

We've also liked our visits to India's and Apna, but for us Flavors still holds the local crown. Let's put it this way: If we worked close enough to this place, we'd be at the lunch buffet at least twice a week.

Have to agree with Jay on this one. We also liked Flavors a lot more than Red Chilies. We didn't have any issues with service at Flavors, but the place was nearly empty when we had dinner there. (Update: It was July 4th, and several East Indian families started arriving around 8:00 as we were leaving.)

The food was fantastic. Actually replaced our previous favorite Indian restaurant (Sitar, another area code ... never mind). Why? Because the food was light and perfectly cooked and seasoned.

For instance, the veggie samosas had a crisp, thin "shell" yet the contents were fluffy, not mushy. Many times the shell is more like the hard ends of an egg roll, overly deep fried and have a heavy filling. Not so here. This set the tone for the other dishes we had as well.

Same applies to the garlic naan. Not greasy or floppy.

Tomato soup -- delicious taste, and just the right amount of spice. We loved it so much we were ready to go to Flavors' nearby Indian grocery store (in same strip mall) to see about a take-out portion.

I normally avoid tandoori because it's often dried out and leathery. But I got the mixed grill to sample the variety here and was blown away by the tenderness of the chicken and lamb. It's how tandoori should be.

Another favorite was the navratan korma. Again, not heavy, you could tell the vegetables were fresh, well seasoned, just the right portion.

There were cleaned plates and no leftovers here. We will definitely be back as this first visit outshined two trips to Red Chilies. Still looking to try other Indian restaurants, but for now, this is the one to beat. Highly recommended.

North Bowl

 Update - 5/22/2009
Once again, North Bowl provided the setting for a fun get together with our friends and family in the 215. Good as ever.

One problem that cost a star: Lanes 7 & 8 kept experiencing trouble -- odd lane resets (or no resets), trapped balls, etc. The mechanic is always fast to help, but it happened a lot this time. That said, it still isn't bad enough to kill the buzz. Thanks again, North Bowl.

Note: Make sure you call ahead for reservations if you're playing on weekends. That makes all the difference.

Even with a lengthy wait on my last visit, I've never had a bad time at North Bowl. The hour-plus wait for the lane still didn't kill it, because on Friday at happy hour, it's what you expect. That's why they take reservations. We didn't make one this last  time, but did on a previous group trip and it was super smooth. Call in advance if it's a concern.

I don't worry about hipsters. And if you do, then what are you doing in NoLibs anyway? When I've gone here with friends, I'm focused on our group, the lanes, the pitchers, the tater tots and pretzel bites, the tunes, and if there's a wait, the pool tables. In that order. And it's served me and the different crews I've been with very well -- no matter how bad we all are at bowling. Can't recall anyone not having a blast there.

Service downstairs has always been fine to excellent on my visits. The upstairs is no problem either because the bar is steps away from your lane. The place is clean, the equipment is in top shape, and it's a very different vibe than your PBR-league bowling alleys. I'm okay with either type, but given a choice, I'll take North Bowl every time (it wins for all the reasons above). And every trip back to Philly, I do. Highly recommended.

After a few more visits, and better experiences with some rolls, Osaka is nearly tied for first place with Koja II. I love me some Kamikaze Roll, and I'm still a big fan of the gyoza and shumai here, as well as the sake list. Add in the 40% off, and the great food becomes an even better deal.

Service is very efficient. I believe we've had the owner the last couple times, since that looked like him in the Folio Weekly feature a while back (which led us to Osaka in the first place). Not so much a warm, friendly fella. I've started calling him the "Sushi Nazi" ala Seinfeld, but that's an exaggeration. Unless he checks out Yelp, in which case I'm screwed.

I also want to compliment Osaka on a clean interior, including the washrooms, and damn fine music. I'd get rid of the LCD TV showing Headline News constantly, but that seems like a theme here in Jax. I swear, 8 of 10 restaurants have a flatscreen in the dining area. WTF?

So, since it's closer to home, Osaka has wooed us away from Koja II with the charms described above. Loved the sushi at Koja II and plan to return but lately I've wanted to avoid dumpy interiors.

This could be our new #2 in town, behind Koja Sushi II. You can't tell all from the first visit, but this Osaka on the Southside did many things well.

First of all, they're offering 40% off dinners through the end of November (hat tip to Folio Weekly), so that makes a good meal even mo' betta ... if the food is good, which it was.

Here's where Osaka won points with me and the LDC:

    * Wine list had some good mid-range selections, like Yellow Tail, Cavit, Jacob's Creek, at reasonable glass prices and low-markup bottle prices. I'm thinking mostly $6 and $22 range. LDC's hot green tea was also quite good, and we're pretty sure it was genmaicha because it had that nice roasted rice overtone, but subtle.

    * Appetizers didn't disappoint: edamame was salted just right, and the shrimp shumai (fried) hit the spot nicely.

    * Sushi and dinner entrees included miso soup and salad, both of which were quite good. Miso was more substantial and brothy than many watery versions. Salad had mixed greens instead of the usual iceberg, and a tasty ginger dressing -- a nice change of pace.

Where they lost a little love:

    * The sushi itself had some ups and downs. On the big upside, my Osaka Roll was delicious (salmon tempura, avocado, spicy sauce, spicy crabmeat, tempura flakes). I'd go back just for that roll and to try some others. Unfortunately, I got it as part of the Sushi Deluxe entree and none of the 10 pieces matched that triumphant house roll. The pieces were all good: the cuts were big, and the fish was fresh; but just like Crazy Sushi, I felt like the chef phoned it in a bit with two pieces each of the standards (salmon, tuna, yellowtail), plus crab stick, halibut (favorite).

Now, compared to different trips to Koja Sushi II, where the chef really mixed it up with unagi, octopus, clam, shrimp, caviar, and few if any repeats, this double-down approach is really annoying. Why wouldn't you want to showcase your variety of flavors? Why take the easy road? Why would you send out a killer house roll with pedestrian selections sharing the plate?

So I'd definitely go back for the Osaka Roll and to try other rolls, but I wouldn't bother with the standard pieces unless I ordered my true favorites. Service was very good. The place wasn't crowded and it's hard to imagine a wait for a table, even on weekends. That's likely due to the location more than anything they're doing wrong. I'll bet they do a brisk lunch business being right near St. Luke's and that megaoffice park.

Anyway, because of the above, Osaka leapfrogged into the #2 spot over both Sushi House locations (Southside and St. John's Town Center) and it's way closer than Bonito in Fernandina. With those aforementioned caveats, I'd highly recommend Osaka.

Zaitoon Mediterranean Grill

Been back for dinner. It was just as good as previous trip, from the food to the service. Still my favorite dolmades in the area. Lamb done just right.

I have to agree with Layla on this one -- except I don't see Zaitoon as a place for kids (unless they're graduating from med school*).

We finally got over to Zaitoon for dinner and it was another one of those wish-we'd-gone-much-sooner moments. It was a special experience befitting a special occasion. Here's the breakdown ...

Hostess was very friendly. We had no reservations, and it's not a huge place, seating only about 60 or so, but we didn't wait long at all for one of the large, cozy booths to open up. (There's also a fair amount of patio seating for milder weather.) So far, so good.

While we waited, a couple came in, reviewed the menu, and left, quietly remarking that it was too expensive. To be fair, the prices are higher at Zaitoon than at, say, Hovan or Hala. But while they all have hummus on the menu, that's about where the similarities end. Zaitoon is to those places as Cantina Laredo is to La Nopalera.

On to the food: Best vegetarian dolmades we've had in this area -- and beyond. They're plump, and the pine nuts and being served cold put them right over the top. The complementary starter, tapenade and oil with the fresh-baked pita and bread, was also a treat. Nice wine and beer list -- mmmm, Warsteiner. They also have sangria and a full bar.

I'm still thinking about the meat combo entree, mostly because the lamb was exceptionally flavorful and perfectly cooked. The kefta (ground sirloin and pork) was tasty too, but the lamb was still the star on that plate. The dish was rounded out with basmati rice, veggies, and a very good roasted beet and walnut salad with feta. I'll get that again.

As for LDC, the vegetarian tasting plate included more of those divine dolmades, plus hummus, falafel, and another best-in-show winner: spanakopita that trounced a lot of other versions, because it was light, crispy, full of high-quality feta, and even held up well to reheating. It's also worth noting that Zaitoon offers an entree vegetarian plate of the day, different than the tasting plate.

For dessert, we really liked the kanafi, which looks like a bird's nest and is a sweet cream center, wrapped in shredded phyllo dough strings, warmed and served with sweet syrup. I hadn't had it before, but would certainly get it again, and maybe request a bit more of the syrup.

Our server was terrific. Actually, everything was. This is a nice option to have outside of the usual upscale destinations St. John's Town Center, and Zaitoon is also open for lunch. I'll be sure to update this review, since we'll definitely be going back. Highly recommended.

Ceviche Tapas Bar & Restaurant

Wondering if things have changed since some of the older reviews with lower ratings, or we just had a terrific experience.

Whatever the case, a group of us (4) recently dropped in for dinner here on a Saturday, around 7:30, no reservation, just grabbed one of the outdoor tables to enjoy the perfect weather ... and were rewarded with a nearly perfect meal.

Service was good. Sangria (red) was very good. And the tapas we had all disappeared quickly. I don't recall every dish, and it probably doesn't matter anyway because you'll like whatever you like, but standouts for us included the octopus, chorizo, clams, and bean salad -- not all in the same dish, of course.

Plenty of dining choices in that area, but we'd go back there in a minute and would certainly recommend it if you're a tapas fan like we are.

Caught a pretty good show here recently -- Sophie Milman -- during the Daytona Beach International Festival. Not sure if or how the set up differs from the regular shows, but it's a solid venue for jazz.

Downstairs tables were already full, and the place isn't big, so if you want to be on the floor, get there early. The upstairs balcony level was fine though. Great sound and views. Bartender knew how to pour.

Cool interior. Parking in the back. Good times.

Riverside Arts Market

Categories: Farmers Market, Arts & Entertainment

4 star rating

Didn't get to meet up with any Yelpers at this event, but we had a great time here. The Riverside Arts Market will make a fine addition to Jax as long as the rotation of artists and vendors brings some new flavor each week.

Even though we only caught the last hour or so, I was fortunate to bump into some of my favorite local artists (Overstreet Ducasse, the crew from Flux) and meet some new local favorites (Grace Bio, Steven Marque), plus grab some fresh strawberries, all while taking in the perfect weather. That it's a short walk from the bridge to Five Points and the tastiness of Hovan was another plus.

Parking was a breeze in the nearby Fidelity lot. There was plenty of foot traffic, shade from the sun, live music and lots of booths. The website does a fine job with information.

The main reason I give the Riverside Arts Market four stars instead of five is that I'd like to see some stronger artwork represented. There are certainly some very talented artists, although because it's not a juried art festival, a large portion of the market featured crafts and other booths that just aren't my thing. (They may be your thing, and I'll be quick to add that LDC picked up some nice jewelry there.)

My question is whether there will be a steady stream of new artists and work to keep it interesting on a weekly basis. That answer will develop over time, and I'll certainly be checking back on some (but maybe not all) Saturdays to find out. And maybe on an upcoming Saturday, the local Yelp crew can coordinate a meetup?

DaVinci's Pizza

 Update - 3/29/2009
I've been back to DaVinci's a few times since the original review, and their consistency is a big reason I'll keep going back.

DaVinci's still reigns supreme for NY Style pizza in my book. The crust really sets it apart from most other places I've tried. This is a bona fide Brooklyn style pizza. And the crew there is always personable and welcoming.

I wasn't sure I'd find another five-star worthy NY Style pizza place around here after Siena's closed. But DaVinci's has definitely earned it. Strongly recommended.

Another fine pizza option. Sweet. My complaints about NY Style pizza are on the wane, and I'm happy to say that DaVinci's is part of the solution.

The crust here is excellent. It's thin yet not soggy or slippery and can hold up to the toppings, which, by the way, include Italian sausage the way it's meant to be served on a pizza (in crumbles rather than coins). What's also nice about the crust besides flavor is the texture, due to cornmeal (I think).

If there was one thing I'd change, I think the sauce could a bit more assertive with the seasoning. Not trying to sound like an actual chef here, or implying that I've got a better sauce recipe, but LDC makes a sauce that has drawn raves far and wide. That's another story. My point is that the slices really perked up after I added a little garlic and oregano, and hit the wow level I was hoping for initially. Anyway, that was an easy adjustment and one I don't mind making.

I went with Noreaster #2 on this mission, and he concurred with the big thumbs up assessment. I've also been told that others from our region are wild about the pies here.

DaVinci's is a small storefront, with a bar and about 5 stools in front for on-the-spot eating. Their specialty is delivery and take-out. I'm sure they do well with that. I'm just out of range at home, but from work, this is a fin choice I'll surely be making again.

The lunch specials are pretty reasonable, too. Under $5 for two plain slices and a can of soda.

Looks like I'm going to have to start 2009 with a best of the beaches pizza battle, pitting this fine establishment against the other current top contenders (Milano's at the beach and D'Fontanta's). In the meantime, DaVinci's is easily among the top three. Highly recommended.

Abe's Pizza

Category: Pizza

2 star rating
 3/29/2009
This Abe's location has probably marked the end of my 2009 Jax Pizza Throwdown quest. At least in this part of town.

We had hope this time. Sauce was good. Delivery was fast. And hey, it got four stars from Julie, right?

Well, after re-reading Julie's four-star review more closely, I now notice she talked all about the place, and even the place next door, but didn't say anything about the actual pizza. Wish I'd caught that before.

Problem: The crust was so soft and mushy it flopped over like a wet noodle. It had too much powdery flour stuck to it, and it wasn't cooked fully enough, even though I'd asked for well done (and their guy even confirmed "crispy" to me).

Even a few minutes under the broiler didn't help. We can't stand slippery slices that even when you fold 'em in half collapse nearly up to the crust. That's the deal-breaker. And the toppings we had (sausage and mushrooms) weren't the greatest either.

On second thought, I think I'm the problem here. I moved to the wrong part of town for pizza, because the one really good place closed, and several inferior places remain -- even though we're next to a college campus. I can't make sense of it, so I'm going to stop trying. I didn't want to be the guy who complains about every pizza place in the area, but it's turning out that way due to a mix of location, luck and personal taste.

Solution: I'll probably just stick with DaVinci's in Atlantic Beach for lunch and hope that they open a new location in the UNF area (or triple their range for delivery). Or revisit Mellow Mushroom for their gourmet style, since they also get the crust right. Sorry, Abe.

King Tut Exhibition

Category: Museums
Neighborhood: Downtown

4 star rating
 3/25/2009
We thoroughly enjoyed the King Tut exhibit and would disagree with some of the complaints posted here, but then maybe we got lucky.

We got a joint discount ticket for Tut and the Aquarium, which saved a lot on both and included the free shuttle between the two. We also went on Friday afternoon rather than a weekend, so the crowds were pretty sparse at Tut until the tail end of the day (5:30 or so).

So we didn't really see bottlenecks or swarms of kids, thankfully. That the artifact info was above and below the displays helped a lot. In fact, we wished the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit at the High Museum had done the same because those displays had one bottleneck after another since you couldn't read over/around people's heads.

As for the darkness in Tut, I thought it set the tone nicely, especially for the gold jewelry areas. Those pieces were amazing and the sculptures and other artifacts of all sizes and periods/dynasties gave a broader historical context than I'd expected to find (and appreciated).

Is there a marketing problem with the heavy emphasis on Tut and no mummy or sarcophagus? Probably. I can see how people might feel somewhat misled. I've been fortunate to see rich Egyptian collections in London, Philadelphia (visit the Univ of Penn museum's collection), and elsewhere, so maybe I saw this Tut exhibit as completing a picture I'd seen parts of before rather than expecting it to be all-encompassing.

It would've been great to have had more from Tut's tomb, no doubt. And we didn't do the audio tour, so I can't speak to that. However, we did have time and space to savor the exhibit, and came away feeling we'd learned new things and had a rare opportunity to view close up many stunning handcrafted items from the ancient world. For those reasons, we still thought it was a powerful, fascinating exhibit.
