Quality Inn At Quechee Gorge

Meh.  It's a decent little inn, and everything about it was ok, clean, etc, but there was nothing special about it.  And the nightly rates are pretty steep for what you get.

It's a really short walk to the Farmer's Diner for breakfast if you'd like a little exercise when you wake up instead of driving the short distance.

Farmer's Diner

If you're looking for sausage and bacon in your brunch, this is the place for you.  Locally sourced and oh so tasty, I especially loved my side of bacon with my farmer's breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and potatoes.

The "hog heaven" special I got the next day (bacon wrapped hot dogs ,on buns with coleslaw) was actually a little disappointing, but only because I've tried a lot of bacon-wrapped hot dogs in my day, and these were just middle of the road for dish with such awesome ingredients.  Regardless, it made for an excellent hangover-fixer.

The coffee is decent if not great, and the staff appear to be in a constant battle with their inability to handle the number of people coming in and out, especially when tour buses full of elderly leaf-peepers show up.

Really nice new liquidation store just off the beaten path.

According to one of the nice ladies there, the owner's been in the wholesale clothing liquidation business for 30 years, and recently decided to start selling straight to consumers instead of being the middleman between businesses.  Apparently he's got a working relationship with the people at Betsey Johnson, too, so there's a nice big rack of dresses right out front.  The downside, at least today, is that none of these are bigger than a size 4.  Lame.

They've also got an interesting set of housewares and some pretty awesome mirrors for sale around the store, although these goods are priced pretty high.

Everything here's new, so that's nice.  Opening weekend sales had me walking out with a sweet pair of Diesel sneakers for $15.  Can't tell if prices like that will last, though.

Also, if you manage to go before 11/17/08, there's a 10% off coupon on their website (which I kind of wish I'd known about an hour ago...)

The fish didn't make me ill, despite how smothered in mayo some of the rolls were.   That's good, right?

Got take-away sushi lunch from here.  It was mediocre.

If it weren't for my last few attempts to eat there, I'd give this place 4 stars.

Incompetence at a level I haven't seen in a while.  They're frequently closed for no apparent reason, and the last time I called in an order for pickup, I arrived 15 minutes later to find they were out of burgers, so I get no food, and no one called me back to let me know what was going on.

The sad part is, the food, if you can manage to actually get it, is pretty good.

Goddammit.  You've raised and dashed my hopes yet again.

First this place was Santa Fe, with a decent dinner menu and a really great brunch.  Then it got progressively worse and worse, with dishes shrinking and quality of ingredients going way down.  Then it closed.

Flash forward several months later, where (possibly) the same owners appear to have regrouped, improved the menu, of course raised the prices, but seemingly fixed the glaring problems which plagued the end of the Santa Fe era.

And then tonight we got delivery from here.  The fried artichoke hearts, once plentiful and juicy, were a bunch of shredded flat chewy bits of nasty.  The barbacoa sandwich was smaller, with a bland roll, and had none of the flavor I'd loved a few months back.  And the 3-day mole sauce pork came with way undercooked beans, flavorless rice, and fried beyond recognition meat substance.

A horrible disappointment.  Here's hoping they can clean up their act without turning into a new restaurant this time.

Huckleberry Bar

Oh, Huckleberry Bar!

The beautifully mixed drinks, often classic recipes done right, inspire me to go home and experiment with mixology.  They're expensive for the area at $10, but flavorful enough that you're not likely to be slamming them back.

The cheese plate (specifically the Shropshire Blue and Boerenkaas) make me come back for more late night snacking.

The brunch (2-6 instead of the far too early standard) is tasty, if not substantial enough.  Coffee and a meal off the menu end up at $11, but really you're going to want to add an extra side of hash browns or grits or something, or you're going away hungry.  The biscuit sandwiches are as small as you'd fear, and even traditionally larger dishes like the toad in the hole show up baby-sized.

The music is usually decent if not great, although one recent Saturday, we came in to find hip hop with a "no requests" sign in front of the DJ.  I'll be sticking to weekday night visits and Sunday brunches, I'm thinking.

Crave on 42nd

Crave on 42nd isn't worth the price or the inconvenience of getting there.

I loved about half of the black truffle mac and cheese.  The crusty top and bread crumb crunch added a much-needed texture which was completely lost in the mush below, making the dish a treat to start until it devolved into oily squish.  I loved the finely diced peppers and chives on top as well, which added texture and a little bit of clean flavor.

The $20 hanger steak was downright awful.  Tough and with a dirty-grill carbony char on it that overpowered even the frankly confusing, oily, and barely flavored peppercorn sauce.  The waffle fries accompanying the hanger steak were amazing, though.

I'll also be making that aloe vera and Grey Goose martini myself, thank you very much.  It's a quietly sweet and cool refreshment.

Our waiter was kind of scowly and dour, which was kind of odd, given how friendly everyone else there was.  The guys refilling the water especially were insanely attentive.  I never had more than an inch of water drank out of my glass before it was being topped off.

Let's start with the good - the bulgogi sandwich was a flavor and texture combination I hadn't had before, with its mildly spiced beef and heavily oiled perfectly toasted ciabatta.  The fries were possibly the best I've had in years, thin and crispy with big flakes of salt.

However, the bad here really outweighed this.  The brunch portions for other dishes at our table were super small.  We all ended up at Metropolitan 3 hours later, hungry for BBQ.  Potatoes were bland, eggs arrived way undercooked, and drinks were weak.  And the service was abysmal.  Friendly, but with three waitresses working a room of what, 30 people, you shouldn't wait well over a half hour to get your order taken after you sit down.

Classy and expensive, the drinks are oh so satisfying at this mixologist bar.  Dress well and expect a bit of a wait at the door; this is one of the few places in the neighborhood that actually has a doorman judging you.  Fortunately, his job seems to be more about keeping rowdy already drunk people out and less about being snooty, and the cramped interior does mean they can't fit all that many people in at once.
