After having suffered from what appeared to be a sinus infection for three days, I decided it was time to see a doctor. Since it was a Sunday and I have no primary care physician anyway, I decided to check this place out. I set up an appointment online and headed over. After filling out the paperwork I sat in the waiting room for maybe 5-7 minutes before being called back. The nurse asked me my symptoms, took my temperature, and told me to wait for the doctor. She was polite, but a tad bit curt. And didn't take my blood pressure - which, I feel, should be standard procedure regardless of what you are coming in for. After a 10 minute wait the physician's assistant came in, listened to my lungs, checked my ears and throat (to rule out bronchitis, strep, pneumonia, etc) and agreed that it was most likely a sinus infection. She gave me a prescription and sent me on my way - and she actually apologized for not spending more time (which she didn't need to really, since it was a pretty cut and dry thing). Overall, if you need immediate care I'd say this is the place to go. I'd suggest making an appointment online as it cuts down on your wait time.

Mariscos El Veneno

We sat out in their small outdoor area for this beautiful June summer night. We were presented with the ceviche once we sat down, and it was incredibly fresh and tasty - finfish, carrots, parsley, onion...extremely good. While I was in the bathroom (which was reasonably clean) I was unable to warn my friend about the hot sauce that is innocently presented as salsa. I came back to the table to find her eyes watering and her quickly consuming more tostadas and fanning her mouth. She loves hot sauce, but this stuff truly is INTENSE. You literally only need a few drops to feel the burn.
Since I wasn't feeling super hungry, we decided to split a dish. We also ordered Pico de Gallo, since it is a favorite of hers. We were quite surprised when we were presented with a HUGE amount of food! We had the garlic shrimp, which came with rice and a small salad. The shrimp was cooked perfectly with an amazing garlic sauce. The rice was also very good, and the dish was just overall well-done. It was the perfect amount for two people.
The pico was a HUGE platter (for under $2!!) of chunks of tomato, onion, and cucumber with a smattering of fresh parsley and cilantro. We added a little of the crazy hot sauce to it to liven it up.
Overall, the food here is amazing. For all the food we got, the total was only $13 - great for feeding two people with leftovers. The only downfalls are: 1. Brush up on your spanish, because the menu is a little confusing and is heavy on the Spanglish and 2. The service is kind of slow. First they tried to give our food to someone else. Then, after we got our food, they tried to bring us extra water several times, and then forgot us. It took quite awhile to finally pay our check.
But in the end, if you love seafood, I would highly recommend Mariscos!

Samah
Categories: Middle Eastern, Hookah Bars

I think the best way to enjoy this place is make a reservation and go with a large group for a week night. They aren't as crazy then, so you are less likely to be booted after 2 hours (which they understandably have to do with as packed as they get on weekends). The party package is actually pretty good - $10 per person, unlimited drinks for each person. And each person gets their own hookah flavor - I had a party of 12 and this was the perfect amount for the 3+ hours they were there.
The flavors are great - definitely go with their mixes, and ask your host/hostess what they prefer. Everyone from my party raved about the place, and stated they would love to come back.
As far as paying with credit cards goes - I have never had a problem. In fact, this was one of the easiest experiences I've had splitting a bill with a large party. They were fast and efficient with the payment process. And didn't complain about the medley of 12 different combinations of cash and cards.
The only improvement Samah could make? If they became BYOB. But overall, Samah is one of my favorite hookah lounges in the city.

Smoke Shack
Category: Barbeque
Neighborhoods: Lincoln Park, DePaul
I have been on the hunt for good ribs in the city - so far the best have been my best friend's homemade beer marinated fall-off-the-bone-orgasmic rib special. But he can only make these on a blue moon, so I am seeking a more reliable source.
Smoke Shack is NOT it.
The staff was friendly - the place was dead and they took good care of us, making suggestions, etc. I ordered the lunch special of St. Louis half slab with spicy BBQ sauce, with a side of corn bread. My friend ordered a pulled pork sandwich with the regular sauce.
They serve all the food on metal trays - which is kind of cute. When they first set it down in front of me I had no idea what I was looking at. What was this awkward perfectly square brown thing? Oh. Ribs. I...think? First bite and I realized this was not going to be a good time. They were incredibly, unbelievably salty. It tasted like I had just bitten into a salt lick. What, did they cure these in a barrel of salt before cooking?! The sauce was good, but totally overwhelmed by the rub - which again, I believe was salt with more salt. The corn bread was also disappointing - the texture was EXTREMELY dry and dense and the bread itself was hard as a rock.
My friend enjoyed the pulled pork, which I tried and found to be average at best. Her fries were the best part of the meal.
For a place that is fairly pricey for small portions, I will NOT be going back even to try some of the other menu items. I would much rather save my bucks for a place like Fat Willies or any of the other BBQ places in the city before coming back here.

Overall, the food is good, decent portions, albeit a bit pricey.
As others have mentioned, the place was a ghost town when we walked in - there were maybe 3 other tables occupied with small groups. The server was friendly, and the menu is pretty large. It is split by Tandoor, Grill, Curries, Sea Food, Vegetarian, Biryani, and Breads. Bread and rice come separate - something that really annoys me since it is so vital to this cuisine. I went with the Malai Kofta, while my friends went with the Radhuni Platter (samosa, pakora, seekh kebab) and the Aloo Gobi Masala. We also ordered Naan and Rice.
When the dishes were brought out, I was sure what I was given was not mine - this was partially my fault, not being 100% sure what Kofta was. But the description said "Fresh cottage cheese Kofta in a cashew based tomato and cream sauce." There was very little cheese that I could taste in the Kofta, and I don't think tomatoes had ever even seen the sauce. But it tasted pretty good, and went well with the rice scooped onto the Naan. My friend's dishes were all well spiced for them - they aren't big fans of super spicy food so this was a good intro into Indian food for them. The kebab pieces on the appetizer platter were VERY dry, which was somewhat disappointing.
The other weird thing was the manager came over during the middle of the meal and instructed my friend how to eat her samoa. He didn't ask, "How is the food?" or "Are you enjoying yourselves?" No, he simply came over and essentially told her was eating the samoa wrong - she needed to use the sauces provided to us. Which she did, but it was sort of weird to have someone tell you how to eat.
Later, during our meal, two girls came in and sat down, used the restroom, and got up and left. I guess this is a common phenomena since public restrooms are nonexistant in this city? A Pee-and-Dash? Anyway, the manager saw this and literally CHASED them out of the restaurant, yelling at them. Now I know you may not appreciate what they did, but when your place is THIS empty and they COULD potentially come back as customers? And to disturb the other diners in such a way? That definitely detracted a star.
Overall, the food was decent but overpriced in my opinion. I would save this place for the lunch buffet from now on. A good option for Indian food in the area, but not the best Indian chow. And steer clear of the manager - he'll tell you how to eat and cause a scene in the restaurant from time to time.

Leona's Restaurants

Things started off fine - I ordered off grub hub, and the driver was here a few minutes prior to the estimated time. Always a good thing. I started off with a side of their Psychedelic salad. It was pretty good - I appreciated the fact that it wasn't all romaine hearts. The garlic parmesan cheese dressing was also pretty tasty. I was feeling revved for the main dish - lasagna.
This is where it all went down hill. I got their duo - two small lasagnas. I chose the five classic cheese and the spinach and artichoke.
Both were overly dry, and used way too much ricotta. To me, lasagna should have some moistness, and be gooey from melted cheese. Perhaps this is a regional thing, but I feel like I was shafted by the overabundance of ricotta. I felt like I was trying to choke the stuff down.
The classic had a decent amount of herbs - so the flavor was somewhat okay, but overly muted by the ricotta. The spinach and artichoke was the most disappointing. An almost invisible amount of spinach, and practically NO artichokes! I was hoping for some good chunks of artichokes here - but there were none to be found. I mean geeze - just scoop some out of the jar and put them in the lasagna already! Don't hide them like ninjas in your 2 lbs of ricotta!
Sadly, for what I paid, this is not at all what I expected. I will probably not be ordering from Leona's again.

The Meatloaf Bakery
Category: American (Traditional)
Neighborhood: Lincoln Park
Upon entering I must agree with other reviewers upon the annoyance that there is essentially no seating. Not knowing beforehand and having a group this was rather frustrating, but thankfully there were just enough chairs for all four of us. While I was waiting for my friends to arrive, I was treated to a sample of their special for the day - a loaf made with lamb. The spices were fairly good, but the lamb had a very overwhelming lamb flavor - which means it probably wasn't made with the best meat. But...I'm not a huge baby sheep fan, so I wasn't planning on getting that loaf anyway.
I settled on their 3 loafie deal (which, in all honesty, isn't a deal money wise - it's just a way to encourage you to buy three). I had the Loaf del Fuego (ground pork with chorizo, green olives, hot peppers,
almonds, garlic and a touch of sherry), the Loaf-a-Roma (mozzarella cheese, sun dried tomatoes, fresh basil, beef, italian sausage, and red wine), and the Wing and a Prayer Loaf (wing sauce, crumbled blue cheese, ground chicken and celery). The Loaf del Fuego was my favorite - not too spicy but having a wonderful flavor and being very moist. The Loaf-a-Roma came in second, and was a little disappointing due to the dryness of the loaf and the spaghetti swirl becoming a dried glob on top. The flavor was good though. Finally the Wing and a Prayer loaf was good but needed a bit more of Buffalo sauce in it. Unfortunately the loafies are not served with any of the sauces in the menu descriptions.
Overall, I love the concept. The staff was super friendly and talked to us for awhile while we ate. They have plenty of various types of loafs, as well as a few sides, and even meatloaf sandwiches. AND...they did encourage me to try a food I had been turned off by, and find that I could enjoy it. However, keeping the loafs chilled and then heating them up in a microwave for customers just makes them lose a lot of flavor. Plus, they don't always have what is on their menu, which isn't made clear by their website or menu. Personally I think they should 'half-bake' some of the items, and then be prepared to finish baking them so customers can go home with a fresh baked product. Or maybe even have a way to preorder so you can get a fresh loaf.
Overall, I want this place to survive since it is family owned and has decent food. I think they just need to work on their prep a bit more.

Hot Woks Cool Sushi
Categories: Sushi Bars, Chinese
Neighborhood: Irving Park
First, the delivery arrived when expected - an hour delivery time, which is sort of long to me, but at least they gave a correct estimate.
The untraditional egg rolls were....well, certainly untraditional. And unfortunately not very tasty. They look like your standard deep fried egg rolls, but inside is sausage (ground pork really), cabbage, carrot, peanut sauce, and a TON of Chinese five spice. Now, I like Chinese five spice - but not in huge quantities. I also didn't really like the texture of the peanut sauce in the egg roll. So, maybe worth a try for something different - but I won't be ordering it again.
I love the fact that you can order sushi/sashimi a la carte for delivery, and I added a Hamachi (yellow fin tuna) to the order. Nice large fresh slice of tuna on sushi rice. Yum.
I also ordered the Crunchy Spicy Tuna Maki. Now, when I have had tempura sushi before it was when they actually quick fried the roll itself in a light tempura batter. What I recieved was more of the roll being covered in tempura bits. Not what I expected, but not necessarily bad. Just...different.The tuna definitely had a good spicy kick to it, which was nice since most spicy tuna rolls aren't really truly spicy.
Finally, I also had the raspberry jasmine tea. I love jasmine tea and this was something new for me, and I enjoyed it.
In sum, the sushi was cold and good. The egg rolls, not my thing. My only other concerns are the price (as other have mentioned) and how they package their delivery. Hot items should NOT be in the same bag as the sushi, although thankfully the egg rolls didn't heat up my sushi too much. Also they use a huge plastic container for the sushi that lets it flop all around - with sashimi this could destroy the roll. I think they should invest in some smaller containers, or something with dividers to keep everything in place. After all, part of sushi is the presentation.
Overall, due to its close proximity to me, its decently good food, and online delivery option I will probably order again.

Miller's Pub
Categories: Steakhouses, Pubs
Neighborhood: The Loop
Now first and foremost let me say this place is ridiculously expensive. The beer is pretty average price for Chicago Loop - $3-$4 for a bottle. They also have a large wine selection. But the food is stupid expensive - and they charge for EVERYTHING. They charge automatic gratuity. They charge a SHARING FEE (if you share your meal). There were several other stupid things they charged for. If you are going to charge a crazy amount for the food, why charge us for breathing?
I ordered the burger and my friend ordered the buffalo wings. The food was average. Nothing spectacular and not worth the money. Plus the server was rude to us since we weren't rich douchebags like most of the patrons.
So...Miller's will not be seeing our post-final celebratory business in the future.
