Coffee & Tea Trip
The iced coffee to go is AMAZING! They have pre-made french pressed coffee for the take out crowd. I am a sugar and soy girl... but loved this brew straight up.
Also purchased an ounce of Lemon Ginger Green Tea to take home... I do not frequent tea places so I was happily surprised when the bag was marked with a suggested steep time.
We also picked up some great new flavors of cup cake! Lemon is still my favorite, but the updated tomato soup (now with chocolate genache & chocolate butter-cream) was divine.
Hoping to score one of the green tea cupcakes on the next trip :-) -

Went on the opening day. They handled the crowd like they had been open forever!
The almond was awesome and the black forest was REALLY dense (in a flour-less cake / fudge sort of way) but was not overly sweet.
But the lemon??? OH MY GAWD!!! Hands down the best lemon in the area!
They were out of the tomato soup... I'll be heading back to give it a try once they start taking orders :-)
They are middle of the road in price for the area, but have a HUGE tea selection and even recycled travel mugs... um... I mean travel mugs made from recycled plastic :-)!

hmmm... I wasn't too busy after breakfast at Lola to consider spending more $ in Douglasland... sorry... it just didn't seem right to have the tags out on the empty cupcake tower.
The cookies looked amazing and the muffins were unusual and well composed so we tried a sampling before continuing down the street to Yellow Leaf.
Chocolate Chip Cookie - crisp with large chunks of chocolate
Chocolate Cookie - brownie on the inside with a crisp thin crust on the outside
Savory Brioche - Light airy bread portion with sweet figs, creamy chevre crumbles and thin strips of crispy bacon. Something had spice on it... both hubby and I had lightly burning lips, but we couldn't place a taste or an ingredient... it didn't distract... it did seem strange.
Caramel Monkey Bread - Small segments of light sweet bread dough coated in cinnamon melded together and topped with cinnamon sugar crisp topping. The caramel sauce was the highlight of everything!!! They should bottle it... couldn't have been more creamy and complex!
The food we tasted was 5 star... the service and availability on a holiday morning with the sidewalks and streets empty 0 stars.

Hubby had pancakes with a dreamy peachy / citrus spread and vanilla marscapone oh... AND maple syrup... amazingly fluffy tangy fruity sweet combination.
I had scrambled eggs, bacon and smashed potatoes. The potatoes are covered in thyme and sea salt and are creamy goodness on the inside. The eggs were heavenly!!
The bacon was a dry hard board of salt... total loss.
Our waiter had more than half the room and I couldn't manage to flag him down to get replacement slices.
Bring your sunglasses if you sit with your back to 4th avenue... the shades don't shade much.... the food was soooo good I'm not marking off for the star my hubby used to cover his eyes.

I was in the area (and in the 7 to 10 day window) so I stopped by to see if my glasses were done at about 2 PM on a sunny 1st of July.
No glasses... "we'll give you a courtesy call when they come in."
When I got home there was a message from the District Manager of ABC&E. She was very apologetic and is giving me a generous discount on my purchase. Oh... and my glasses are ready for pick up.
Time stamp of the message... 11:35 AM
Sigh... will be trying again today (calender day 10).

Don't expect to be told the true price from the receptionist. Having read the reviews, and played the technician game at many other places around the country, I thought I would be one step ahead and ask the receptionist what the 'extras' cost.
We don't have a price list that you can review before ordering. You have to have a technician walk you through the process.
How much for progressive bifocals? The ones with no lines?
$80
OK... not bad... I'll take an appointment and give this a try.
The exam was VERY fast... I didn't even realize that the doctor didn't set up both eyes with the new prescription and ask me to read something.
I had already picked out a frame from the cheapest rack... but it was a half frame. That would be $210 extra for no line bifocals.
What about the $80 charge?
Oh no... the cheapest would be $99 for 1 pair of lines bifocals and 1 pair without bifocals.
Sigh...
I over heard a mother and son get a 15 minute pitch on the anti scratch coating. They said no 11 times while I was trying to find a pair of full frames that wasn't soooooo thick. And after they walked out I got to learn about the child support payment problems 2 of the 3 technicians were having.... I had to rip another star in half and use them as ear plugs to keep going.
How much to make the second pair full sunglasses....
wait for it...
"I'd have to ring it up in the computer and then tell you"
nope... $329 was my final limit.
7 to 10 days from now I may update this review with the outcome of the pick up visit.... or I may leave it be a mystery... if there is a way to get through the exam and selection process honestly I sure couldn't figure it out!
There were 3 other large groups of multigeneration oriental families. Kids running around, people laughing... a great happy place to read the paper and enjoy some great dim sum!
All of the dumplings were perfectly cooked, the crispy biscuits were tasty with tender fillings. Nothing was too sweet or too strongly seasoned.

Lunch Review:
Great food if you are willing to slow jam your lunch.
There is one chef and one server. Grab a menu and seat yourself.
Three parties were eating when we walked in but there were 4 take out orders filled in the 15 minutes before our meal was served.
The cup of velvet corn soup was forgettable, but the hand cut noodles were amazing! We took home enough for at least one meal each.
Ask for your check when the entree is dropped and you have a chance of having your card run shortly after you finish. We caught a break with no other patrons coming in after us, but it was noon when we left and the place was empty?
I will be returning this weekend for the Sat / Sun dim sum and will bring reading material since the food was worth the wait.
There is a set dim sum menu and no way that carts could fit between the tables. Can't wait to see what they cook up!
The quality of the pasta salads on the salad bar was great, but actual ingredients for a lettuce based salad (beets, tomato, celery...etc) were mixed together like small children were allowed to run a muck. Not just a stray pea here and an errant beet there.
If this is a one time deal I'll update on our next trip and give back a star... but the employee that was restocking empty items didn't even try to replace the muddled selections.
Lobster and Crab ravioli were amazing. Cheese tortellini was very fresh with a vibrant filling.
We used a http://restaurant.com certificate for this visit with no fuss or hassle.
Huge crates of produce and a constant stream of cars through the parking lot.
Lots of starter veggies and annuals at the start of the season... gourds galore in the fall.
One star of frustration over the guesstimate for the bark and gravel... worth the time to head over to West Valley Highway to one of the establishments that sell by weight.

Piles of mini and full sized cupcakes. Taking our cue from the previews reviews we stayed away from the mini's and went for a 6 pack of full sized cakes.
Not as moist as those on 4th avenue, but moister than those from across the street.
The pucker wasn't very sour and only the frosting was Almond but the two chocolate cakes were distinctive with one being more of a mild milk chocolate taste and the other closer to a devils food (but not that moist).
The coffee was well mixed and VERY strong and the cupcakes traveled home without incident.

There was one other woman shopping while I was there... the entire 10 minutes the worker had a loud personal conversation with another gentleman and didn't even look at me when I checked out.

Loaf of sourdough is very sour and very chewy and very hot and makes a perfect appetizer / mop for the plain tomato sauce.
Located just across the way from the Waterfront Seafood Grill this was a great post Elite Yelp Event destination for the post cocktail party meal.

If you come to my house for a holiday you expect a cupcake sampler plate... not just the corner store kind... but something different... something you haven't seen me review.... something you can tear apart in a flurry of flying forks and oh and ah over the tastes and textures.
Where to go for our 4th of July gathering???? Why not Dahlia Bakery? We could branch out... get some good bread... the possibilities seemed endless!! We walk through the door at about 9 AM (2 and a half hours after opening) and what do we learn... No cupcakes until at least 11:30!!!
EEK... what is a south sounder to do! We purchased a sampling of pastry, walked out the door, turned left, walked 2 blocks, and went straight back to cupcake bliss!!
We're going to be in the friend dog house because the American and the Green tea didn't make it to tomorrow... but it was ooooh sooo worth it!!!
The Italian butter-cream on the American cupcake was like a souffle - light, airy, creamy and transformed into a beautiful texture you don't expect.
The green tea was very moist, slightly denser than average (lighter than the black forest) with a taste I can't even describe... not strong, no after taste, not sweet per se, certainly not bitter... I wish that I had gotten 5 more to figure it out :-)!
Hubby tried the vanilla bean DRY soda (brand name not just ending note) and enjoyed the balanced flavor.
I am kind of glad that we don't live closer or our cupcake crawl would surely come to an end... all be it a blissful one :-)!
