We happened to be in the neighborhood and stopped in here on a whim with a Chinook Book coupon.

I ordered the tuna panini, which was pretty darn tasty. My husband ordered one of the rice and bean bowls and it seemed to cut his big hunger right down. We split a large house salad, which was $7 for a big plate of lettuce, a few tomato chunks and a few slices of cucumber. We asked for more dressing as there was barely any on there and she brought us a little thing of plain old balsamic vinegar. Boring!

The interior is somewhat cute but not very cozy.

This is the best coffeehouse/place for nibbles in my neck of the woods.  Sweetness has tasty muffins, crepes, cake, cookies, and also serves  brunch and lunch items. Every time I go in there's something different and unusually delicious-looking on display. Plus, the coffee they serve, Caffe Umbria, is my favorite - I even prefer it to Stumptown Coffee.

Check this place out if you're in my 'hood.  The owner works the counter most days and her staff are smiley!

Bijou Cafe

Portland is full of great breakfast places with fresh, fun ingredients.  Places like the new Bar Carlo on SE Foster and Zell's on SE Morrison.

Bijou Cafe is about $5 more per person than those restaurants (meal and coffee tab for two came to $35 with tip!) and the food doesn't even begin to compare.  My oyster omelet was so-so, the coffee was weak and cheap-tasting (get some Stumptown!), and my husband's roast beef hash was overcooked and tough.  Also, the roasted potatoes are far tastier at other places I've been.

The only thing Bijou has going for me is location... Basically, when you're downtown and you want something more than a bagel and coffee for breakfast, you're kind of in trouble.

I've been seeing Dr. Sonja Pulley for years now.  She's quite good, with nice strong hands and an assuring manner.

Our acupuncturist, Oliver Leonetti, is fantastic!  He always sits with you a for a few minutes to discuss things before treatment and is attentive, kind and patient.  Treatment is relaxing and effective; the office ambiance is soothing and classy.  The acupuncture here worked miracles for my husband's lower back pain.  Highly recommended!

Give me a break... $7.79 for a small tuna melt panini sandwich with NO sides - no handful of chips, no pickle, no nuthin'.  Austere interior with hard chairs and stools and sunlight glaring  through the window. Ugh.

A colorful addition to the Foster-Powell neighborhood.  This is a coffeeshop / art gallery in one.  You can get ice cream, bagels, desserts, and coffee, then walk around and trip out on the art on the walls.  The pieces are pretty out there, from psychedelic to modified comics to mixed media shock and a fun hour spent. Check out Joe Buddy's web site to get the latest on gallery showings.

This is my old reliable when I need to buy a gift for a child.  This story has very little commercial tie-in corporate crap.  Instead, one finds high quality, intelligent and creative toys, books and accessories for kids under 12 years old.  I loved these types of toy stores as a kid and prefer shopping in them now that I'm an adult.  Only complaint: a little on the small side.

Bar Carlo

The new Bar Carlo (opened early 2007) is a welcome replacement of the Russian Restaurant there before.

Bar Carlo is open from Tues-Sun 8 am-3 pm, making it a breakfast and lunch place only. Dishes, which include 3-egg scrambles, omelettes and sandwiches, run about $7-10 apiece.  Local and organic ingredients are used when possible. All dishes come with toast, potatoes AND fruit (no choosing amongst them!), which helps to justify the price.  Stumptown coffee is bottomless at $1.50.

We really like the veggie scramble with its asparagus, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, red peppers, and goat cheese. There's a Mexican-style omelet (forget the name) that my husband orders almost every time.

Service is friendly and quick. Seating is always available, but being people who sleep in late, we're usually walking in for Saturday breakfast at 1pm.  Great addition to our up and coming neighborhood!

biwa

After weeks of looking forward to a tantalizing bowl of noodle soup, I was bummed and disappointed with Biwa.  I don't get what all the raves in the local press are about.

The skewers we ordered, while somewhat tasty, were incredibly small for their price. It was one of those experiences of feeling crestfallen when the waiter sets the dish down in front of you... so...tiny!  I ordered a bowl of udon soup and it just wasn't what I had hoped for. The chicken, instead of being naturally chunky, looked like little balls of pork.  Since I don't like pork, I asked the server about it to make sure we received the right soup.  She had no idea what was in the soup and had to look at the menu and then go back to the kitchen to ask what was up with the chicken.  Apparently, they were chicken "meatballs" - all pink and mushy.  Ick.

We left slightly hungry and $35 poorer. Won't be returning.
