Claro's Italian Market

Now I am a huge asian food fan and I love living in the SGV for all the great asian eateries around here but sometimes you just want a good sandwich. Not a baguette with BBQ pork (which is a fave), but a italian sub and this is the place to go. I usually come in to get some sandwich meats and a nice country loaf. Pick up some spicy mustard and I am in in hog heaven. My fave is the spicy capicola but since I gave up pork for a while their deli turkey and baby swiss is great also. Pick up some meat and make yourself a sammy.
A really good torta and a drive thru!!! Ahh yeah. Been a couple of times and was always impressed. The Al Pastor is great. The Asada is great as well. Since I recently have given up red meat for a while I was worried that their pollo wouldn't be on par with the rest of the menu but to my surprise they make a great Pollo Torta. Good stuff and recommended.

I DJed here for Club Technique on Tuesday 1/6/09. This was the fist time I have ever been to this location. Getting in was a breeze as we got there early on a Tuesday night. I can imagine this place gets crazy on the weekends. When we walked there wasn't a lot of people but that quickly changed when I got on at around 11:30. The dancefloor picked up and was pretty much going full steam until the last track at around 1:45 AM. I really like this spot and look forward to DJing here again in March.

Musha Restaurant

Met my wife for dinner here on Tuesday before I was set to DJ at Zanzibar around the corner. This is a time where Yelp came to the rescue. We both don't know Santa Monica that well because we live in the east side but after a little search on Yelp we easily narrowed down our choices. Since she works in Culver City we met there are around 8:30 and it was pretty packed. I decided to eat at the bar. I ordered some Edamame and a large Kirin and waited for my wife. When she got there we had the Lobster Roll, the Sashimi sampler (w/ Yellowtail, Salmon and Tuna Poke), the Spice Tuna Dip (Excellent!!), some Tofu Fries, the Musha Fried Chicken, Tuna Yakke (A Korean BBQ Smothered Sashimi with Quail Egg! AWESOME) and the Japanese Pumpkin Croquette. All the dishes were great. The sushi chef also gave us some different japanese salts to try with out dishes. The service was great. The food was excellent. I love the fact that I was eating japanese and listening to salsa music over the PA at the same time. Man, it felt like home. I will be back for sure. This place is great.
Whenever in Pismo Beach this place for breakfast is a no brainer. Delicious Cinnamon Rolls with a variety of toppings (Almonds, Pecans, Walnuts, Walnuts and Raisins, Raisins and Crumb). They have also a Cream Cheese frosting topped one but you can get any of the rolls topped with the frosting. Get it warmed, have a glass of milk or cup of coffee and sit by the ocean. You cannot go wrong with this combo. Thank God this place is a 3 hour drive away, otherwise, I would be there all the time.
Came here for lunch while on a little vacation in the SLO area. Had the Tri Tip Sandwich and the wife had the Steak Salad. The sandwich was out of this world. So much so that my wife kept stealing it away from me. It was the simplicity that made it so good. Fresh Roll, sliced medium rare Tri Tip and a BBQ sauce that I would drink from the tap if available.
The place has a college sports bar look and feel which works for the area. I wish I was closer so I could try other things on the menu but I will be back for the sandwich. Mmmmm that and a cold beer...could be the perfect meal.

My wife for some reason craves Korean BBQ on a weekly basis. While I do love Korean food I can wait a bit, but if she wants some BBQ during the middle of week, we tend to go here. I mean it is a Tofu House and the main attraction is the Tofu Soup but for me...it is all about the Spicy Chicken here. I am all about spice and their Spicy Chicken has it in spades. The traditional appetizers (kim chee, bean sprouts, etc.) are very good but I have a soft spot for the hot picked cucumbers. I love them. I could eat those all day. The tofu here is good as well and the mushroom tofu is especially nice but I usually stick to the BBQ when here. My wife is all about the crispy rise that you have to fight to get out of the stoneware that the rice comes in. I have also had the Jap Chae also which is also very good. All in all, this is a great place to get your tofu soup on...or a nice steaming plate of Spicy Chix!

Mustard's Chicago Style Hot Dogs
Category: Hot Dogs
Just had this place for lunch. For some reason I felt like a good Hot Dog which can be a rarity in LA. I mean of course there is Pinks but who feels like waiting in line for a decent dog. It seems like it is more of a tourist attraction these days anyway. Mustards is a great place for a good Chicago Dog. Nice poppy seed buns, great shoestring fries and a spicy hot dog that just simply tastes really damn good. All Killer...NO Fillers! All in all a great hot dog, great price. Not a trendy spot but who needs that when you just want a good dog. Only wish it took debit cards.
I ate at Gus's about 10 years ago. It didn't leave a impression. The place was a dark and dank, and felt like one of those places that only senior citizens eat, which made sense since the food is bland (no offense old people). After hearing that they had a makeover and new owners the wife and I decided to check this place out this past Sunday for some Q. The decor is much nicer. It has a modern sports bar kinda feel but still a place you could take the kids. Got the cornbread appetizer to start. I am not usually a fan of cornbread as most of the time it is way to dry for my taste. This cornbread however wasn't bad at all and the jalepeno jelly and honey butter was a great addition. For my meal I had the Ribs and Brisket Combo with some BBQ beans and Sweet Potato Fries. The ribs were fall off the bone good. Great sauce (The spicy one is more my speed). The brisket was good but I wish there was some of the bark there. That to me is the best part of a good brisket. The fries and beans were good as well. I wish some sore of bread (besides that of the corn variety) was available to sop up some of the brisket. I also had a Knob Creek Mint Julep (which for those that don't know is basically a bourbon mojito), which was a little strong but I prefer my drinks a little strong over a little weak any day of the week. For dessert we had the Bread Pudding which while I have had better, was still very good and the Fosselman's Ice Cream on top helped a lot.
There are better places for Q in LA for sure, but none that are this close to where I live...so I am sure I will be here again to get my Q on.

When I pull up to the Rosemead stop last night of the Kogi BBQ Bus, the line to order was maybe 75 to 100 people deep. You gotta think, is this hype or is this such a special treat that normal thinking does not apply. I get in line and wait....and wait....and wait... half way there, the chef comes out saying they might not have enough for everyone and that they are leaving promptly at 9:30 pm. I look at the watch. 8:45. I might make it. At this time they are capping the number of tacos you can get to only 3. Damn, why didn't the wife come with me. Oh well. I finally get to order at 9:10 and get a Chicken, a Short Rib and a Pork tack. They smell great, but they smell more vinegar more then anything else. I take them home..
My wife and I try all 3. Good stuff. The tortillas are well made. Thick, but not to thick. The meat was well grilled and I really didn't crave any other sauce on it other then what it came with. It had a kim chee like topping of vinegar topped cabbage. They are spiced good, but I could use more heat. I hate when people hype of the spiciness of their food only to have a medium heat if that. I will have to admit, I think the idea is novel and it may sound better on paper then in application but I will have to try it again to see if they really seal the deal. They only had taco's last night so my dreams of having a Spicy Chicken Burrito are dashed until next time, but I am looking forward to it maybe without the huge ass line.
