Anyone have any good recommendations for renters insurance? Moving down to DC next week and would like to hear some positive or negative experiences. THanks

The best recommendation is to make sure you have it and that you have enough coverage. Get  replacement cost coverage, not what it is worth.
If you are military or eligible for USAA, I recommend them. http://www.usaa.com If not, try Erie Insurance http://www.erieinsuran... . If you have a vehicle you will be insuring as well, you can usually get muli-policy discounts.
Good luck and welcome to DC!

I have had great experiences with Nationwide for renter's and auto insurance.  The agents are very personable, and they gave me quick and accurate information when I needed to make changes to my policies or file a claim.  The phone number for Nationwide Thacker Ins is 202-785-1966.

Unfortunately, I am not eligible for USAA. Several other people I have asked have renters insurance through Erie and are satisfied. I am also going to contact Nationwide Thacker. Thanks for the advice!

I use Traveler's Insurance http://www.travelers.com/
The rates are great and their customer service is very helpful. I get my payments deducted automatically online. I highly recommend them.

I use Traveler's as well.

Renter's insurance is dirt cheap.  Definitely worth having.

I have Traveler's too.  Never had a claim, but the customer service otherwise rocks!

I actually called Traveler's once because there was a fire in the building and my apartment had gotten all smoky smelling.  They were quite prompt and helpful.  I ended up not needing to file a claim after all (upon further inspection and a prompt move to another apartment, no actual smoke/soot had gotten in; it was just the smell of smoke, and one bottle of Fabreeze was luckily all I needed).

Incidentally, Fabreeze is damn amazing.  I believe its production involves a secret land of faeries.  Before: Couch smells like smoke.  After: smells lightly scented of Fabreeze.  Next day: smells like absolutely nothing.  All scent completely gone.  Faeries clearly replaced my couch in the night.  The Fabreeze is probably just a marker for them.
