10/29/2009 Melany S. says:

My husband actually is in the unit who does these Dover Missions and receive the fallen soldiers. It's suppose to be an honoring of the soldier not the president. Using dead soldiers to get publicity. How low can you go? It pisses me off that the Press was even their. How did they find out that obama was going to visit the fallen soldiers. People should be giving tribute to the men who have lost their lives not giving props to the pres for saluting them. Common people.

Hi Shan! Is this seat taken?

  1. 10/29/2009 S B. says:

    Right.

We should "honor" our war dead they way the last administration did: by  hiding them.

He's the Commander in Chief; it's his DUTY to publicly recognize and honor our war dead, and I am glad we have a president to takes that duty seriously.

What's "low" is to try to hide the sacrifice of these men and women because it's politically expedient NOT to honor them publicly.

    Cripes, woman.

Hi Melany.  I'm sorry you're upset.  I heard about the visit on NPR this morning.  Since the military lifted the ban on the coverage of fallen soldiers coming home, the media was allowed to be there.  I believe of the 18 soldiers, only one gave permission for the coverage, and so they reported on that one soldier, but also got to scoop that Obama was there.  While I can't imagine the grief of the families and close friends and other soldiers in their unit, I don't think that Obama was using the issue strictly for publicity.  As the President presiding over this war, I think he owes it to those soldiers to pay his respects, and he should do it to as many as he possibly can.  Now, covering it and making it a media spectactle, yeah that's disgusting--but I thnk that's more of the media's fault in general.  I'm sorry it upsets you though.  War is one of the few things I don't argue about.

how would you like to recieve your dead husband after not seeing him for months with cameras around, it's not a funeral. these men are on ice coming home in crates. uit's discusting that the president is using this to get him publicity. the ceremony is suppose to be silent.

  2. 10/29/2009 olivia "mama said knock you out" d. says:

SB took the words right out of my mouth.
People have short memories and like to twist things to fit the way they see them.
Bush forbidding media coverage of fallen soldiers might mean honoring to you, but dishonoring and dishonest to me.
Obama's act might mean publicity to you, but it seems like long overdue public honoring and recognition to me.

  3. 10/29/2009 olivia "mama said knock you out" d. says:

I personally would be honored to have my husband honored by the president of the US. Luckily the closest he ever got to a war zone was Bahrain (it's still considered combat zone, btw) and I got to greet him at home.

I think you're missing the part where the family gave the media permission to cover it.

It is not dishonest. it's suppose to be a privet event. Only family members are usually invited to recieve their family members from dover. it's not suppose to be a spectical. Again this is not a funeral. Its a man coming home for the first time. his family should get to see him first with out making it into the next big thing.

10/29/2009 Bassey "Wrong girl, wrong kind, wrong hand 2B holding" E. says:

Very true Melany, but I think it's important to remember that this didn't happen for all the soldiers that came on those planes.  All those pictures you see are of ONE soldier and his family gave permission for that to happen.  Every other soldier was received in silence and had the full respect of the media at that time. Obama met separately with the families and he went inside alone--no entourage in the chapel.  He paid respects alone.  I don't believe it was a media circus.

  4. 10/29/2009 S B. says:

Melany ... please pay attention: the families of the war dead have the CHOICE of whether or not there's a public recognition of their loved one's remains when they are returned.

    A CHOICE.

It's disgusting to you? Fine. Don't look. But I believe that family will proudly keep a copy of the newspapers announcing that the Commander-in-Chief, the person who takes responsibility for this war and for our troops, publicly mourned with them.

He did that on my behalf (on behalf of the whole country, who elected him) , at the family's  request.

If you  want to be outraged by that, fine. But you're looking like you're coming down with the Dana Virus.

Melany - I'd like say first off, that I'm glad to see you back on the threads after what happened last time. You got moxy.

Moving on, I haven't heard about what you have posted, but with all things dealing in politics - perception is based in one's ideleogical bias.

As for the lowest you can go - I think lying about a football star that died under friendly fire, covering the facts up, and then making a media show about his heroic actions in fighting terrorists is the lowest thing a president can do.

We don't have to agree, but we can be civil......     right?

The military calls the process a dignified transfer, not a ceremony, because there is nothing to celebrate. The cases are not labeled coffins, although they come off looking that way, enveloped in flags. The media should not be ther. If the president wants to honor the soldiers I think that is great. I think that lifting the media ban should have not happened.

as for Vigorian: Do not talk about my husband You have no idea what he does. He actually has recieved many of the soldiers at Dover. He had missions at the tomb of the unknow. He was there working security at Obama's inogeration. So seriously dont just and say that these men gossip and dont know their stuff.

My point is the media shouldnt be there.

Your point is that families should be silenced. The greatest honor any nation can bestow on it's fallen, is to allow the families who have lost a loved one to choose how they wish to receive their soldier. You are arguing that a family that wanted the media present should have that wish denied. You are arguing for fascism.

The media is kept in check during the transfer.  It's not like paparazzi for The Enquirer.  It's actual respectable news organizations (AP) that would like to maintain a cordial relationship with the military, so I'm sure they wouldn't be so rude as to talk to, photograph, harass the other families that did not give permission for them.  As you can see, even for the one soldier and Obama himself, there's only a small number of pictures that have been released.

"The media should not be ther. If the president wants to honor the soldiers I think that is great. I think that lifting the media ban should have not happened."

But it did, Melany. That media ban was put into place during a largely discredited administrations, campaign to manipulate public perceptions of a tragically mistaken war it was waging and to "smooth over" the tragic consequences of that war.

That, we hope, is over. Government will always have some secrets. But making it *policy* to make the mourning of war dead a "private matter" is a false and cynical way of dealing with what is a very public, political, and important event.

President Obama was doing an important part of his job. A job that was not merely neglected, but actually eschewed by his predecessor.

  9. 10/29/2009 Keon "Dancing Santa" D. says:

The problem is when you start off a post making a very opinionated statement, you have to expect responses that counter or react to that opinion. It's not that people aren't allowed to have opinions on yelp, but you basically are jumping to conclusions or at least making a very opinionated guess about what you think happened.

In a 2006 interview with the military newspaper "Stars and Stripes," Bush said he felt the appropriate way to show his respect was to meet with family members in private."

We should have never left Afghanistan in the first place that is where our fight was PERIOD not Iraq, that was W's war. Those who attacked us were in Afghanistan and they are still there because we had to abandon that to foolishly invade Iraq. The Taliban in Afghanistan "the forgotten war" thrived under our obsession with Iraq which had absolutely nothing to do with Binladen or the Taliban. Iraq was the biggest waste ever in our history. Don't get me started on the subject.

  27. 10/29/2009 Hannah "Empress of The Universe" C. says:

Here's my prob with this whole thing... (cracking open can o' worms)
9 months in, and no decision at all on Afghanistan after the report from the general was turned in in August...
I feel like maybe if he had made a decision, either to surge or to pull out or do SOMETHING after he got his recommendations, he may not have had to visit that dead soldier.

... and here I was feeling glad we have a President who doesn't just jump in on things that require thought, planning, consultation with his peeps, and with our allies.

This is not a time for MBA's proving their decisiveness in order to nail down that December bonus for a short-term gain. We've been there (Iraq) and need to go ahead, accept the fact that whatever happens in Afghanistan will be blamed on the President not acting fast enough, and THINK.

  30. 10/29/2009 Hannah "Empress of The Universe" C. says:

When has he thought, planned, or consulted?  I see him at fund raisers and press ops more than anything.  He met with the guys whose business is war once in how many months?
    Meh.
Planning, consultation, and thought are welcome... and I'd love to see evidence that any of that is going on.

  31. 10/29/2009 Derryk "The Samurai" A. says:

You won't cause all that going on is kept a secret for a reason.

  32. 10/29/2009 Hannah "Empress of The Universe" C. says:

It's not a secret when he speaks with or doesn't... just what they're talking about...
Part of an interview with the general in charge of Afghanistan about the Pres:

"You've talked to him once in 70 days?" Mr. Martin followed up.

"That is correct," the general replied.

this walks the line between FINALLY doing something presidential and cheap theater. When in doubt, wrap yourself around the flag and the military. Bush used to go to Walter Reed - without the press following him around - and visit the families and soldiers there. He'd been doing it for quite some time before it came out in the news. I got the feeling he was genuine.

For those who are asking, yes I do have a problem with him going to Dover for this "meet and greet" photo-op. This is the same man who before the election on his world tour didn't have time to visit with our wounded troops in Germany because he couldn't have his entourage (including photographers) in there with him. So he went to the gym and played basketball. This is the same man who a couple of days ago in Jacksonville told sailors he wouldn't rush his decision on Afghanistan and risk more lives. Yet his very waffling on the subject in the mean time is putting the troops already there in more danger. The same man who said during the elections that "Afghanistan is the right war." Who hand picked Gen McChrystal because he believed him to be the right man for the job. Who he then didn't have the time of day to meet with and study his proposal until the General brought it up in the press. He is playing politics with the lives of our brave men and women who are over there. Get off the pot Mr President and make a decision. Fight to win or bring them home!

If you wanna get mad at presidents, get mad at the last administration who spent most of their time deceiving and bungling. WMD in iraq.. all sorts of stupid crap like that. I honestly get tired of people whining and crying when you had an administration before that blatantly lied about things. Are you one of those people who also believe Iraq had something to do with 9/11. I'm sorry to bash and get personal but there is only so much I can take. It's framed as if some irreparable damage was done to the families and arguments like these really test my patience. I have a feeling if it was George Bush you wouldn't be upset about this at all. Don't ask me how... or why... but Keon's last post made me think. I think any family would be HONORED if the President showed for this, especially if there were children. When people shout what a senseless war this is and the child cries that daddy died in vain, mama can show her child that the President thought daddy was an American HERO. (or mama died).

I will admit I did not vote for Obama nor did my family (not trying to start shit, just stating a fact about me). However, I was honored that he was involved in my sister's graduation from the US Naval Academy. Did I think the press being there took away from her glory? Not at all. Regardless of my political views, I am proud that my sister got to shake that man's hand.

And as far as this latest move on Obama's part, as  (realllly liberal) Republican, Obama won points with me. So Melany, your views are warped like Dana K, babe. You talk about American pride? You have none.

    Kick Rocks, Deuces.

  52. 10/29/2009 Rob R. says:

Every family is given three options as it pertains to the media: 1. Allow the media access, 2. Don't allow any media, or 3. Don't allow media access but have an internal military service tape the proceedings.  The family gets a DVD of the service if they wish with options 1 and 3.  The decision makers are the family, as it should be.

The President, or more fitting in this situation The Commander-In-Chief, can show up anytime he wants.  I don't get why this is an issue.... would you rather him show up to the World Series opener while 18 servicemembers are arriving at Dover AFB?  You fox"news" flunkies would have loved that....
