I am in the market for another set of cables as I popped one of mine driving back from Bothell last night. I am not near my car...but it is a 2000 Honda Civic. How does one size the damned things?

I've always had the people at the store do it, it's worked out OK.

Do NOT go to the Les Schwab in Redmond. Last year, they Mister B a set of itty-bitty chains... for a Jeep Wrangler. When it finally came time to chain up, hilarity ensued. Really, really angry hilarity.

Damn you, lack of editing. There should be a "sold" in there. Mister B is not a verb.

I think the boxes for the chains usually list the car models that they support, or was it the tire sizes? I guess you can also grab the info off the side of your tire before going into the store and test them in the parking lot before you leave. Got mine at walmart. Might be a bit hard to find them now.

I'm pretty sure the boxes have tire sizes they support. If you find a store with chains in stock, I'd double check with asking to them or too see a parts book for your car, etc.

I have been looking on amazon with no sizing help. I can't get to the store to get the damned things!

Might have to wait until I can drive again, then just get them for the future.

Get the numbers of your tires and start calling around.  I've been looking for the last two days, but my tires are apparently one of the most common sizes - and therefore out of stock.

I think the boy found some south of downtown and is going to get them for me today.

I know the Firestones don't have any because we were there for 3 hours this morning and they were answering the phone "Good morning and thank you for calling Firestone. My name is Ed and we are out of chains, how may I help you?" Ballard Firestone said they should be getting more tomorrow but they'll go fast!

    http://tirechain.com/C... your tire size

Just gotta find out your tire size.  You can usually look that up in your records from your last tire install or make an educated guess on your car model and type.

Marissa -- based on the stock tire size listed here:  http://www.civicforums... for the 6th generation Honda Civic, I'm expecting that you'd have P185/65R-14 sized tires on your car (you can verify that on the sidewall of your tire and probably on a plaque/sticker on the driver's door B-Pillar (the vertical part of the door frame that's towards the rear of your car) that you can see when the door is open, though the tire sidewall is a better choice unless you know it still has the stock tire size on it (many used cars may or may not, if you bought it used).  The tire size should be formatted like the one I listed above, even if it's not exactly that one.

You'd use that to size your tire chains.  Based on that size I found, here's the link for the tire chains from the site that Sarah posted:  http://tirechain.com/P...

Double check that tire size before you buy...

Ted is correct, snow cable/chains are applied by the size of the tires installed.
If your have stock tires, the tag on the inside of the drivers door will have the tire size as well as the rec commended tire pressure.
