I'm dining with a veggie couple new to the area tonight. Where would you take them. Price range is open but want to get in without a reservation if possible.

where are you, shatangi?  Probably the city but I have a few friends who are vegetarians and  I am so not but we enjoy going to Golden Lotus or Binh Minh Quan both Vietnamese here in Oakland.  Be advised that Golden Lotus is run by Ching Hai who is this kind freaky buddhist self proclaimed master . . .but the food is GOOD . .. even the fake meat stuff 'cause when my friend told me that she wanted me to eat some sort of seitan thingy I said, "Bitch, you're crazy out your head."  And then I proceeded to eat every morsel.  I think that there is the Golden Era (run by the same crazies) in the 'loin.  You can go to Greens as it's such a lovely night and it'd be nice to walk Crissy Field after dinner.

On second thought, go to the Helmand (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). It's a much nicer atmosphere and you'll find a lot to your liking if you're not a vegetarian yourself.

GG, I just read your review on Helmand.  Do you take the menu home with you everywhere you go?  How do you remember all those ingredients?  Or do you write down everything you eat when you're out?

Collin, I frequently take a menu if the place will part with one, otherwise I make note of as much as I can remember as soon as I get home.

I like Bok Choy Garden out in the Richmond.  It's never crowded, so you can dine in peace:  http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Or Angkor Borei in the outer Mission near Cortland. Closer to you, there is Medicine, but it may not suit your tastes.

Alive on Lombard. Raw and great. Beautiful garden in the back.

Anada Fuara is great, but cheezy environment. Never a wait.

Lettus Organic is good. I always feel that I am eating in a museum bookstore when I eat there though.

GG's reccomendation is good... BUT, YOU CAN NOT BEAT THERE $9.99 lunch buffet during the week where you can sample so many goodies. Remember that it is NOT a vegetarian place, but they do have a ton of veggie dishes (I love the pumpkin in yogurt).

Up in Bernal, you can go to Little Nepal (also not vegitarian, but lots of options).

I also love Millenium.

Feel real Organic is high on my list, but I haven't been there yet. The Yelpers seem to love it.

Also, on Valencia, I'm interested in trying the vegan Japanese place.
Chaya or something.

So after all of your wonderful suggestions, we wound up going to my fave restaurant Trattoria Contadina where we were served by Ted, an awesome dude. I guess they were tired of hearing me rave about the place. They did it again. Grazie Trattoria!!
