I know everyone loves to share their magic remedies.  Bring it on.  I woke up with a sore throat.  This is going to seriously impact my plans for tonight's party if I don't perk up.

Fresh squeezed orange juice with a half tsp of red cayenne pepper.  This will clear out your throat temporarily.  Take a bottle of it with you and sip it throughout the day.

loquat honey does wonders, although it tastes like crap.  Add a dollop of it, along with some sliced ginger and cloves.  Pour hot water over the mixture and drink.

Throat Coat tea by Traditional Medicinals

or else this secret remedy you can find in a Korean grocery store- it looks like orange marmalade (but tastes way better) and you make tea with it. Really great! The jar I have translates to "citron honey tea"

Tried the ginger and have been sucking on zinc drops.  Still no improvement.  Maybe I just need to take a nap and dose up on cold meds.

OK I AM HERE TO SAVE YOUR LIFE!
i just got over a horrendous 2 week sore throat. it's never been so bad for me & i don't have health insurance.
I agree with all the tips above.
+ gargle with salt water
BUT the #1 thign that saved my life is...

A HUMIDIFIER!
it has been amazing. i kept it on overnight near my bed and woke up feeling almost all better. after the 2nd night, i was cured. See if someone you know has one you can borrow. otherwise, maybe try to find one at wlagreens
AMAZING!!

Rinse with salt water... Don't buy anything else, it's a waste of your hard earned dollars... There is really no other way.... Lots of fluids and rest.... You can always see your doc and get some antibioctic if you really can't tolerate any further... Best of luck

Only if you can find "salted plum" with warm water.  Chinese Medicine Center.  Not sure exactly which one, but give your best shot

nasal decongestant (sudafed) to stpo the nasal drip causing the sore throat and ceterol cough drops or spray which has a good numbing agent in it.

cepacol / cepastat lozenges... they disinfect and numb the throat... don't taste that great though.  another trick is hot orange juice.  weirdest thing i've ever done, but it really did relieve some of the discomfort.  If it's the sore throat flu that's going around you'll have to take an advil or two, cuz it's not caused by post-nasal drip alone.

I think I have some of that throat coat in the back of my pantry...  I will have to dig it out.  Yeah - this is not a post-nasal drip.  More of a swollen achy feeling accompanied by a general feeling of malaise.

Sarah- I had those symtoms along with the rest of the sick cold symptoms that a person gets. I went out and bought AirBorne per my moms recommendation and took it 3 times a day. Granted, it is $7 a tube and 3x's a day it lasts about 3 days... but I went from dripping, sore and sneezing to feeling much better after the 2nd day! I think it is the amount of vitamins that is in it that helped my bod do what it needed to heal itself.

Also, if you're really in a bind, there's this thing called "singer's saving grace," which is some sort of herbal throat spray. It's amazing--if you're croaking along and need to give some sort of presentation (or, of course, sing) it can really save your butt. I don't know what it does, but it works. Probably available at health food stores? Or just google it....

Try eating lots of garlic and salty food, or gargle with salt water. Avoid all sugar.

Slippery elm lozenges work really well, so does Throat Coat tea which you can buy at Rainbow or any local hippie mart.

Fresh juices.  If you don't have a juicer, invest in one.

Best recipe for a cold/throat:

2-3 carrots
2 apples
1 beet
1 piece of ginger

Juice and drink immediately.  MMM good and you'll feel better within hours.
