IQ and I may be hitting Cosi fan Tutti tomorrow. I don't think we'll have time to dine before hand. Does anyone have recommendations for a dinner place afterwards that is open late enough to get a nice meal? I'm thinking Jardiniere but what other options are there, and are they open late enough for post-Opera full dinner?

Kevin S. says:
bump again. i'm going to keep bumping until someone starts coughing up options.

Kevin S. says:
bump. I'm not messing.

Absinthe, but you know that, you wrote a spot-on review of it...ummm, maybe Indigo, though they have a new chef and I'm not sure how late they are open. Might be worth checking into if only to serve your yelping.

Kevin S. says:
I ate at Indigo a loooong time ago so I haven't Yelped it. If you were pickign which would you pick? I have not eaten at Jardiniere. I've heard mixed things about Jardiniere, I don't want to kill a good post-Opera buzz by having a stuffy snotty disappointing meal, but if Jardiniere is really good, I would like to check it out.

Lula Mae W. says:
Have never eaten at Jardiniere, but, people do say good things about the cheese plate and that can almost trump the snooty stuffy card. I've not experienced the new chef at Indigo (recent transition --March, I think), but if the servers have remained the same, they are lovely and helpful and are very good about helping select wines...

For something a little different you might try Paul K or Sauce. If you're going to the opera in a suit, Absenthe or Jardiniere.

Kevin S. says:
Thanks Lula...I suppose we could also walk over to Soluna...

Jardinere can be one of the best meals in the city. I've eaten there - but it was a few years ago.

I would recommend one of the handful of late-night dining spots in SF (Oola, Globe, Brazen Head, etc...) It's a sad commentary on SF nightlife, but on a Wednesday night any other restaurant will be rushing you out the door. I walked up to Corazon after the theater last week and the place was closed at 10:30. I might as well have been in Des Moines...
06/28/2005
Kevin S. says:
Hmmm...maybe we better plan on an early dinner rather than a late one. I don't want to drive and re-park or cab around, I'd rather walk afterwards.

Kevin S. says:
I want to wear a suit, that's half the fun, so maybe Absinthe or Jardiniere. I'll check their hours and call and ask some pointed questions about being rushed out.

Colin S. says:
Max's. Though, after an opera, the wait staff singing might hurt your ears. The portions are ginormous.
06/28/2005
Kevin S. says:
No thanks, I swore off the entire Max's chain after too many nasty meals at several locations.

Sarah D. says:
Kevin, I would definitely go to Jardinere. They are most certainly open for dinner after the show...and the best part is, they're used to the post-opera rush, so the service and quality of food shouldn't be lacking! I like to go there before a show, sit at the bar (you'd have to go early to do this), have some bites, then come back after the show, get a table, and enjoy the amazing cheese and dessert selection...but that's just me. Either way you won't be dissappointed in the food...it's amazing! I would avoid Absinthe like a giant mosquito. There food is seriously lacking, and the prices are not. Perhaps Citizen Cake would be another option...or Zuni?
06/28/2005
Kevin S. says:
Thanks for all your suggestions, I am going to pursue Indigo and Jardiniere, see if they're open late, and maybe Soluna or Absinthe as backups. Otherwise maybe we'll go for pre-theater dinner.

I Q. says:
Do I have to wear a suit? I am not wearing a suit to work!
06/28/2005
Kevin S. says:
I'll bring you a suit to slip into. Are you all enjoying this domestic scene?
Can't get early enough reservations at Jardiniere or Indigo and the latest is Jardiniere at 10:30. Not sure we can make that and looks like we would get rushed out.
06/28/2005
Sarah D. says:
if you can...go to Jardinere early and sit at the bar. It's less stuffy anyway...and they serve the full menu!
06/28/2005
Kevin S. says:
I may call Jardiniere and beg for a 530 table so we can relax, we rushed through a birthday dinner once and it took a lot of the wind out of our sails. Should I tell them it's for George Lucas and then when we get there tell them George had something come up and will be late?

lisa "Boudicca's Mom" g. says:
I have to respectfully disagree with Sarah, I think Absinthe's food is very nice, especially the brassiere menu they serve in the bar.
I find Jardinere too stuffy to really enjoy their fantastic food. Plus, Absinthe makes fabulous cocktails and Jardinere... well I suggest you order wine at Jardinere.
Absinthe serves food in the bar area until midnight.

Mickey "always by your side" R. says:
Jardinere, if you are in you black tie uniform; Absinthe's, if in a suit and tie. Lisa is spot on...as usual.

patrick "tricksy" g. says:
Kevin, I know you like Absinthe and so do I, so I leave that to you. Zuni is always a good stand-by. Citizen Cake? The food always seems so uninspired and a little uneven in execution. Thumbs down to Sauce but, if you weren't super hungry, you could nosh on cheese and salami at Hotel Biron. Wine is a meal, right? I guess Suppenkuche might be open that late. They seldom disappoint.

Kevin S. says:
Well, we are not going tonight. Our ticket connection fell through so we'll have to purchase tregular price ickets anyway, and it seems if you want dinner and opera you need to do it on a weekend or plan way ahead, as early reservations at the aforementioned places were already booked solid. I am so seldom in the city these past few months I'd like to be able to review something while I'm at it, so I'd like to try Indigo again or perhaps Jardiniere. Surely some of these places must be aware that the Opera ends late enough that they could squeeze out a few more turns by going a bit later in the evening and making it well known to opera/music goers. Sheesh.
I wouldn't have this problem in NYC, but then again, I had this problem in Venice! We were eating crappy third rate Chinese food after we finagled our way into La Fenice's reopening week for Traviata.
We have our own charms here to make up for this downfall, don't we?
But thanks to all for suggestions!
