A friend is in town for a meeting.  I need to pick a place to meet up with her mid-day (Thurs) in the Union Square area.  I'm trying to think of someplace easy to find if you are unfamiliar with the city, easy to spot someone from, inside, with a place to sit.  Any suggestions?

The little cafe that actually sits in Union Square is a great place to meet for a glass of wine or a panini. Especially if it is a nice day outside.

There is a very large monument in the center of Union Square.  It was my first view of downtown San Francisco after my first visit and was stunning during the holiday season. Shoppers and people from work comingle into large masses that is fun to watch. Ironically, considering the city of SF, the park was named for supporters of the Union Army during the Civil War. There is a very large statue in the center that rises high above, and standing directly near or in front of that statue usually serves as a great meeting point. Hard to miss!

Perhaps Swig on Geary between Taylor and Jones.  Across from the Hotel Adagio which is a pretty easy to spot landmark.  Large window with seats looking out toward street--it's a bar, so they'll likely expect her to order something, but if she's not looking for hard booze in the middle of they day, they have coffee and tea.

if you're looking for cocktails in a cozy place with lounging couches and candles everywhere i say Azul is great! its located in Tillman Alley across from Banana Republic. not open on mondays though i think....its easy to find because they have a lot of signage pointing you to the bar from outside.

oh, but you're not going to be able to spot her walking around outside from inside the bar.... i can't think of a place like that unless you meet her outside first.

try Scala's Bistro on Powell adjacent to the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Tell her it's on the street with the cable car line.

Espresso Cafe, right next to Scala's and a nice and easy place to get a window seat.

Trying to spot someone from indoors is tricky. I have to agree with Taylor - the foot of the statue in the center of the Square seems perfect. If it's raining, you can meet right under the Christmas tree in Nieman Marcus, on the side facing the entrance.

Thank you for all the suggestions.  I think the statue in the square or Christmas tree are both good places to meet.  We'll see how cold it is on Thursday...  I have thin blood from years of living in AZ.

Lobby of Saint Francis, upstairs lobby of Sir Francis Drake, lobby or bar of Campton Place, Kuleto's, Neiman Marcus downstairs cafe or rotunda cafe.
