So. I was wondering if anyone knows of a hamster breeder or if they actually exist. I'm looking for a white dwarf hamster with black eyes. I had one named Mochi, until earlier today when I found him in his house, dead. It's sort of sad because I'd just gotten home from buying him new hamster food from Dolly's Treasures, in Belmont.
This is Mochi:

Anyone have any tips for me as to where I can find a Mochi look-alike? The San Mateo SPCA doesn't have any hamsters now, and Petsmart and Petco don't have any whites ones with black eyes.

Sorry to hear about Mochi. =(
If you wanna make the trek up to the City, you may want to check out Animal Care and Control (15th St & Harrison, 415-554-6364). When I was looking for a hamster, they had a good amount of dwarves there; maybe they'll have a white one with black eyes!

I don't know but I'm sorry your pet died. I have several cats, including one very aged guy with kidney failure so pet deaths always make me kind of teary eyed.

When I lived in Santa Cruz my little sister found a lost dwarf hamster outside our apartment and decided it would be a good pet. Then she moved and left me with the hamster. The next week it had babies. I think there were five or six of them. They were getting really cute and fluffy and I was about to find them homes when suddenly there were four more baby hamsters! Either there was some brother-sister or son-mother action going on. Then the baby hamsters ate the new babies. At that point I was so freaked out that I took all of them and let them free in the field behind our apartment. I'll never look at hamsters quite the same way.

Wish you had taken them to an animal shelter instead of dumping them in a field. I don't think hampsters can survive on their own.

Yes, never let domestic animals go in the wild. Usually they won't survive for more than 24 hours.
Check out
www.petfinder.com. This website is great -- you can search by area, animal, breed, size, age, color, etc...and they're all rescue/shelter animals!

I know, I know... I was just so freaked out that I wanted them gone Right then. Obviously I shouldn't have had the hampster in the first place (damn sister).

Sara, thank you thank you thank you! My friend checked petfinder yesterday to see if there were any white hamsters but there were none, and I didn't think to check it again until you posted the link.

I'm going to call Santa Cruz County Animal Services tomorrow morning!
And thank you everyone for your condolences and help. My boyfriend kept laughing at my being sad about my hamster. I know, a bit silly, but he was my first furry pet!

Pets are friends. It isn't silly to feel sad when you lose a friend.

I feel sad when I break a glass. At least a hampster is alive, unique, and has a soul, emotions, and a relationship with you. But maybe your new hampster will be a new kind and color -- adopting an animal from petfinder is a mitzvah.

Gil, you are awfully sweet!
