Seriously, I'm starting to get really picky about the reviews ppl write... especially by those with no pic and just 1-2 reviews. Is Yelp getting so big that it's being used for business owners and their employees for self promotion? Geez... it's a bit obvious and a waste of space.
Just venting...

nah, I've invited friends to join, and sometimes it just doesn't stick. :) i have to admit my work productivity has gone 100% down since joining yelp.... maybe the 1-review yelpers are actually the smart ones...

I concur with Melanie, Yelp just doesnt float some peoples boats. But it sure as hell blows my skirt up. My work work ethic & productivity has gone down the drain. Thanks Yelp!

Along the same lines as Becky's comments, I've also noticed that some biz owners are telling their patrons that had a good experience to give them a good review. So I guess I'd be more wary if a business has tons of 5-star reviews from these 1-review, no-pic folks.

Dilip "Traveler" M. says:
Yes, I do agree that biz owners might be doing this...but hey, eventually the "yelpers" will catch up and give the right review :)
All is fair where biz $$ are involved :)

yeah, i understand that there are lots of new yelpers and that some yelps are asked for by business owners... but i still get iffy and frustrated reading some of the "amazing," 5-star yelps that just aren't consistent with everyone elses. especially those ones that follow up the 1-2 star reviews... it just takes more effort to check out the "new" yelper profiles as well as those that don't quite seem to make sense.

becky f. says:
oh, and to the new yelpers, your credibility goes way up if you at least provide some picture... it doesn't even have to be of you...

I'm with Melanie and Mike in that I've gotten people to join, but they haven't been into writing reviews or posting pics. You can lead a horse to water...

There are some places reviewed that seem fishy to me. They have all glowing 5 star reviews. It is hard to imaging that NOBODY has anything negative to say. There is ALWAYS a sour-puss in the bunch.
I imagine the owner creating multiple Yelp profiles and 5 starring his own businesses?

Rachel M. says:
I've tried to get friends into Yelp as well, but it doesn't always stick. I think some folks like using it as a resource rather than actually providing reviews - I'm tending to go that way.
Maybe it would help if the inactive accounts were deleted after a certain time - after emailing the person, of course. Honestly, it's a waste of time to see the people who review ONE place and don't even bother to fill in any information. I want actual reviews by actual people - not the human equivalent of domain squatting.

I totally agree with Rachel and "Stupid F."... maybe I'm not as optomistic as the others, but it does seem like it gets more difficult to judge a place when there's lots of 1-review yelpers. Thanks for your input guys! i'm not alone!

Yes a lot of people I know use it for a resource but I'm like the only one I know who uses Yelp to yelp. I also know a few who like to use it to just read it for fun.

joanne, sorry to hear about that nasty review of yours... i flagged it just as i think many of your supporters have... glad that there's this type of forum for us to vent/discuss stuff. i can't believe that things can get so crazy on yelp... with the fake reviews, mean comments by competing businesses and sometimes horrible business owner/chef responses to customer opinions. still, i gotta love my yelp!

Joanne "I CUT HAIR" V. says:
Whether her review was real or not, I just felt that it seemed too fabricated. What was written in there was a bit harsh as well. Understood when people get angry they get angry, but that just seemed straight NASTY. Although we, as a salon, can't figure out who it is and granted people do sometimees use other alias than their own name; there were things as a salon we all could work on. So, YES that review from Thea brought up a lot of controversy in the salon, we the stylists thought it was funny because: it happened a few days after a settlement hearing happened between my old boss and I, and I'm not Chinese, and I'm not FAT...(a bit chubby in my eyes, BUT give me a break I had a baby)
So yeah...Yes glad we have Yelp and these forums to vent. I love my yelp. Yes it's helped with business at our new salon, my own business, and it's a great place to read about new restaurants and share great ideas....
Unfortunate for those who use it for demise!!! Damn those Villians...It's up to you and I and the rest of the Yelp Superheroes to stop these crazy antics!!! hahah lol Okay ENOUGH!!!

Sorry.... I'm still trying to get a pic up.... but I like Yelp!!! I've used it a lot before when deciding on places, but I've finally decided to join.

Philly P.,
Welcome to yelp! I don't think the OP was talking about newbies like you that are making efforts to make yelp a great place. it's the ones that have been on here for months and months and ONLY have 1 glamorous review. After browsing the site a little more, you'll spot them...
SYOY! (see you on yelp) ;)

I've invited some friends, and they haven't had time yet to update their profiles. my husband will be the last person to put a picture up. he hates myspace, and probably thinks this will be similarly annoying. it's taken the time i spent on myspace and moved it here! lol

yup, i agree with jeannette... i was recently new to yelp and happened to get incredibly addicted... and of course, there's many who have to slowly warm up to the whole concept.
so for those who are new and trying to get into yelp, just take heed to the possibilities that there are others who may use this fantastic site for questionable reasons. you probabaly know what i mean!
