New(er) to the area and still don't know where I should go running!

Any recommendations on trails in San Jose?  I plan to check out Vasona Lake today but would love to have multiple options for my marathon training.

I'm particularly interested in softer trails...i.e. dirt trails or the like.

Thanks in advance for your South Bay expertise. =)

Oh and the closer to San Jose the better!

The bay area has an INCREDIBLE open space preserve program. I go hiking nearly every week, and I usually encounter runners on the trails. Get the book "South Bay Trails" from Amazon, or check out http://bahiker.com/ for more info. I'm pretty new, too, but my favorite place thus far is Uvas Canyon. It has beautiful waterfalls, which will be very active currently given all of the rainfall we have been receiving. Here are some photos from my last trip: http://flickr.com/phot...

Is the marathon on soft trails? Concrete is much harder to do thus you should train on what the marathon is run on. See if your ankle, knee can take the abuse for 26.2 miles. Just an advice. If it's your first marathon, after 12 miles is when all hell breaks loose. But trails are fun.

If you're willing to go a *little* ways, Rancho San Antonio (near Foothill Expy and Hwy 280) is a wonderful place to run.  It does get crowded, mind you, but it has lots of winding pathways around a cute little farm.  It has simple trails for the casual walker and the monstrous "PG&E trail" that challenges even the most well-seasoned runners!

If you don't mind running on the road, Saratoga has plenty of nice streets to run in.  Around West Valley Junior College the roads are nice and shaded, but you have to watch out for cars.  And, I echo Su P.'s Alum Rock recommendation---go early early to get free parking, otherwise there is a charge.  :(
