I'm part of the social committee at my company and after not having a holiday part this year due to the situation of the economy in 2009 and the recent upturn of the economy we are planning our holiday party for 2011.  I tried to look at recent threads for suggestions but the one thread I found for a similar party size did not receive any responses.  I have a feeling my fate will be the same but though what the heck.. it's raining outside.. maybe some party planners are bored..

We don't have a huge budget so I'm looking for any recommendations for hotels that are very affordable.. and not like the Marriott who charges $900-$1500 just to rent the room.. (just exaggerating.. I haven't looked into the prices but assume they are expensive).

Would appreciate any suggestions.  Oh and entertainment suggestions also, in the past we normally do those cheezy casinos so looking for something different.. Thanks!!

I'm imagining you can triple that for a decent Marriott. Hopefully, some party planners will chime in with some budget solutions.

400 hundred people is a lot of people. Hornblower Cruise in San Francisco can be fun and run between $50 -70 person. My old company rented out an aviation museum set up a dance floor and catered the event. I don't know how much it cost but that was pretty fun. I've also been to a company party that was at Beach Blanket Babylon and one at Teatro Zinzanni both were entertaining but no dancing or open bar.

Hotels can be expensive and there are a lot of venues in the bay area.  In addition to your venue, as you mentioned, you will need entertainment.  I can say that as a Family, Children, Corporate entertainer that there are many different types of entertainment depending on your tastes.  More and more adults are enjoying the high-end face painting, glitter tattoos and balloon twisting that children have had fun with.  For information see http://www.BayAreaStar... and feel free to contact me with any questions.  I am Cheryl, the owner, and in addition to what you see on my site, I can also offer things such as belly dancers, henna artists, caricatures, physic readings, stage magicians & stage jugglers, etc.  If you have an interest in something I do not provide, I can lend you a hand in pointing you in the right direction.

Thanks for the suggestions Joie.  I'll keep those in mind, the only thing is we like to host at a hotel so the employees have an option of crashing after a night of drinking..

Thanks Cheryl for the entertainment tips.. I'll definitely mention these different options to the committee..

I had such a hard time finding a venue in SF that could hold more than 300 people.  Finally, I came up with the best idea ever, Hornblower Cruises!  They have 3 boats that hold that many and up to 2000 people actually.  What an incredible way to celebrate...under the Golden Gate Bridge and with the beautiful SF skyline in the background.  Actually the Bay Bridge is more beautiful at night than the Golden Gate.  Their prices were very reasonable, actually less than some of the hotels I looked at and the food was much better than expected.  I received great customer service and would recommend to anyone.  Who wants to be in "event room C" when you can be on the most beautiful bay in the world?  But that's just me, I love the water.

I volunteer at the Humane Society of Silicon Valley and they have done social gatherings and parties there.  Not sure about 400 people plus catering but it's cheap and different.  It's not at all depressing and very clean and modern.

Book a community center, and have Boston market cater. That will make it super affordable!

Is like a big dinner party ? How about going to a place like Sneha Indian Restaurant, in Sunnyvale. They have several large rooms, and there are several hotels just a few blocks from there. This may not be what you are looking for, but it may work out, and cost a fraction of what renting a large hall will cost. I know they have large weddings and company parties, and I have gone there a few time's, only to find the place closed for a private party, or they have 1 part open to regular customers, and the rest for the party.

Not sure if they can do 400, but it is worth looking into, that is if you like that kind of food.
