Joanne "I CUT HAIR" V. says:
The search of a grand apartment started a year and a half ago....
We found this place called The Enclave...beautfiul apartment community. Gated, tennis courts, two pools, one olympic sized, one regular sized, a kiddy pool, jacuzzi, fax and copy center, beautiful recreation area, and a gym....WHOO HOOOO.... Or so we thought....
after spending a wonderful 10 undisturbed months, we started running into problems...
My car had been vandalized in our underground parking lot, as well as 7 other vehicles that night. Some dumb ass kids decided to jump on cars, YES I REPEAT JUMP ON CARS. Denting my roof pretty badly as well as denting other resident's cars and car roofs as well. Of course, I had to call resident services in regards to it and of course, "Unfortunately, crime happens anywhere, we can make sure our security patrol is more aware of things and if they see people hopping the fence they are sure to make them turn around."
Mind you in this beautiful lovely hotel like community; the neighbors next to us in another "Stonegate"...hmmm an interesting "hyphy" crowd, they are always playing their ghetto music because well I can hear their cars from my third floor balcony.
An incident that happened hours ago, pushed my last nerve.
MY APARTMENT GETS BROKEN INTO. Yes I was stupid to leave my kitchen window closed, yet unlocked (as I have left it unlocked plenty of times, because I felt like my community was SAFE) as I was in a rush to drop off my daughter and go to work for my first client. Someone had decided to crawl through a window no larger than 2ft by 2ft and walk out the front door with my laptop. Our next door neighbor is also missing a screen and their door is ajar as well... LOVELY...
So I find out by receiving phone calls from my fiance while I'm at work. His first question. "Where is your laptop?" I say "On the kitchen table." He answers "NO ITS NOT!!" I said "Call 311 make a police report."
Now I can't sleep. The beautiful apartment community that we had been dying to get into a year and a half ago is not what I expected at all. After speaking to the security officer and him mentioning that for the past year and half almost two that he had worked there, the past two events were not the first.
The worst thing about this whole situation is not feeling safe in your own home.

Sorry that this happened to you, Joanne. I can't believe security isn't more tight in a place like that, especially if it's been hit once before!

That's great that you guys got a house though!

But, you have to lock your house. I have to tell someone where I live to do it. He thinks we live in a place called heaven and no one will break in. Anyone can break in but it's called prevention.

But in Joanne's case, it appears that someone is always looking for an opportunity to break in, and the problem is that the security or management appears to not want to do anything, nor care to make the complex any safer.
Sure, it is common sense to lock everything.. but, knowing that there's someone outside, constantly looking for ways to enter your home is what's scary IMHO. Especially if you have children.. you worry even more.
What really baffles me, is this happened in broad day light. What the hell is security doing?

The boy got caught....!!!
They caught the boy coming out of another apartment. 14 years old...WTF...
Anyhoo about my apartment: there are 8 buildings with over 75 apartments in each building. There are a lot of people living there. I know its common sense, but I was cooking asian food so I opened up my kitchen window to air it out. I closed it on my way out but didnt think to lock it.....
=( Hopefully his prints match those that were on my window....

I've also lived at The Enclave for the past year; we've been counting the days til our lease was over so we could get the hell out. Nothing makes you want to own a home more than living in a cheaply made apartment.
It looks like the new management company is doing really nice upgrades/remodeling to the units, but it's like putting lipstick on a pig - they only do cosmetic improvements and won't repair the structural flaws of the place (roof, flooding balconies, doors that don't fit in their frames). We reported a funky smell from a wall that had visibly growing leak stains on it, and they simply painted over it rather than fix the source of the leak - the roof above us.

No matter where you live, it's still your responsibility to lock up. Like in a restaurant, or Bart, if something gets stolen, they are not liable. They have security, but nothing is perfect or near perfect.
Because you live in a nice neighborhood, it is more likely that someone's going to WANT to break into your house. Poor people do NOT have nice things, so why waste your energy trying to break into their house. Anyways, it's dangerous to rob people in the ghetto. You never know who the house belongs to. Might be a gangsta!
So my conclusion: your apartment, your responsibility to the end. Security is just a facade -- fake comfort. Even the cops do not catch even close to everyone that commits a crime. Also, the richer you are/the richer your neighborhood is, the more careful you should be. It's savage out there [in the world].

Yes I know it was definitely retarded of me to leave my apartment in a rush with my kitchen window closed yet unlocked.
I had to eat it, while my fiance reminded every fucken day that week.
To say the least, we no longer live there. Sortly after my laptop got stolen, our house that we were purchasing closed and moved out two weeks after the incident.
As far as my laptop goes, haven't gotten it back, but I am still waiting on the justice system ot prevail. A detective called me not too long ago saying that the prints that were found in the apartment indeed matched those of the young gansta hyphy kid, who was bored out of his mind during his suspended week in school. And that the SJPD was going to issue a warrant to search and seize. Which I have no doubt in my mind that the laptop is no longer in his property. BUT since he is a minor the parents will have to pay for the cost of the laptop as what the detective said.
So still waiting....I'll have my laptop repaid to me one way or another....

Wow. I am so sorry for your expereience. I am still stuck in a lease there right now and I actually had my car broken into 3 months into my lease. My covertible was torn up and a few (luckily non valuable) items were stolen. I made all the necessary reports and was also told by the security guard there that several other vehicles had been vandelized that night as well. So you know what one of the manager's stated when I asked what The Enclave would be doing in the way of security? She first recounted a story of her father having a convertible and that convertible were not practical cars. Then, she said that at that time they did not have the funds to purchase any cameras, hire more guards or anything...basically she was telling me that they were not going to make improvements.
On top of that situation, I have had the MOST DIFFICULT time dealing with the resident services staff and the managers. From, parking situation to entering my phone into the directory so that my guests can buzz me and get through the gates. Simple requests that took nearly 7 months to complete. They are unprofessional, the apartments are cheaply made and the area is UNSAFE.
Just last week, all the tenants received a "WARNING" letter from The Enclave stating that there had been NUMEROUS DAYTIME BREAK-INS OF APARTMENTS AND CARS. They stated that they are "considering hiring additional security staff" and "considering additonal security measures such as garage gates and security cameras." NOW they're looking into it? NOW after DOZENS AND DOZENS of tenants have already been victims of robberies, vandels, etc.
I have just barely begun to detail what is seriously wrong about this place...but you get the idea. DO NOT RENT AT THE ENCLAVE. YOU WILL REGRET IT AS WE ALL DO...
