Joe "EPA demands Bay Area Smug Emission laws-film at 11" B. says:
"At every turn when a neighborhood tries to improve it gets dragged down by the criminal element and the lack of support from city government."
Marc's comment (now 5 months old, damn this thread is old!) seems to suggest there is a separation between the city government and criminal element. Given the current Edgerley scandal, Dellums' thievery of taxpayer money, and De La Fuente's son's rape charge, I can't see much of a difference between the street-level criminals and the city government. Oh yeah, the guys in office wear suits.
I am truly sorry I voted for Dellums and not De La Fuente. I sort of believed that Dellums could unite communities (he ran as a mayor that would listen to the communities, flatlanders included, but has totally ignored our calls for more police) and that De La Fuente was part of the failed City Council that voted for a police hiring freeze in 2002. I should have gone for the lesser of the two evils - at least DLF was able to make a positive impact on his home turf of Fruitvale.
I think criminals believe they have free rein in Oaktown. More cops would lead to fewer crimes of opportunity for teenagers just starting to decide which path to go on in life - do I commit a street robbery to increase my street cred? Maybe not, if there are cops regularly on patrol . . . and I hope the FBI probe of Edgerley convicts her. If Oakland government cannot reform itself, then we institute term limits and bring in outside help.
Oh Jerry Brown, for all your faults I never realized how much you did for our struggling city. You gave us the Strong Mayor Initiative, and now we've put that power in the hands of a do-nothing mayor. Dellums had some great years, but they are behind him now. Recall him.
