Jeremy "Big Papa" S. says:
I just left 21st Amendment and there was a girl sitting by the bar knitting. Yes that's right, knitting in a bar. Can someone help me understand...where did this trend come from and why is it all over SF?

jenna p. says:
baby, its been around for a while. havent you heard about the "knit and bitch" clubs? you can always spot a hipster hangout when you hear the knitting needles clicking. i used to make fun of the obsessive hipsterknitters on the ftrain to williamsburg.

Deb "Try Harder" T. says:
Omigodomigodomigod. Knitting is like. So cool. Cool chicks do stuff and wear unique things. Knitting (and crocheting) covers them both! It's also a great way to justify sitting in front of the TV for too long.

Katie C. says:
macrame is the new knitting.
3/4/2005
Jeremy "Big Papa" S. says:
Macrame? I think its time for guys to start a retro fad. I was thinking since nobody duels anymore, maybe we could that bring back. Any one up it?
3/4/2005
Michael E. says:
I'm trying to single-handedly bring back friendship bracelets...
3/6/2005
Deb "Try Harder" T. says:
Chia pets? Anyone? Friendship bracelets, wow, there's a blast from the past. I prefer the friendship pins myself, as you can display more at once to show off how ridiculously popular you are. Macrame...yeah...let me know how that macrame sweater comes out... :-)

Michelle d. says:
I'm not knitting and I am sooo cool! I do think that knitting, like baking, is therapeutic. But I can get that done by just filing. Or sleeping. And public knitters? Can be a little obnoxious. But not as obnoxious as the folks who do that stitch by trace thing. Although it kinda makes me long to color by numbers again. Oh, to be young again!

Jaena G. says:
I went to ImagiKnit on 18th and Sanchez and to my surprise, not only did they have a great selection of yarn, but a couple of cool-looking chic guys...for some reason, I don't think they were in there to ask about "purl1, knit2!" Hey, knitting is the antithesis of hi-tech...it's a way getting back to basics...

Ellen O. says:
i read recently that quilting is the next big thing and knitting is out... but what about just plain sewing? has anyone been to that sewing place in hayes valley that rents out machines by the hour and does classes? i think its called stitch... looks cool.
3/8/2005
Jeremy "Big Papa" S. says:
Maybe Hayes Valley is where the creative arts action is. I noticed Urban Knitting Studio on Fell...

Mitzi "DVNO" Y. says:
I'm still crocheting. I haven't quite mastered all the techniques yet but once I do...knitting won't know what hit it.

I'm definitely seeing people with homemade scarves everywhere. There's just something satisfying about wearing a slightly messed up skimpy scarf that a friend made for you.

Yes I've heard of it ... way way back in '96 ... tech support at Silicon Valley ... but it was the uncool techie females .. who were not really hip, on the contrary ... and they really used to bitch .. i thought it was weird ..
WOW! .. it's hip now? ... wonder, will Rubik's cube be in again?
another example of a Hegelian Dialectic ...

Gourmet G. says:
Jaena, considering that 18th & Sanchez is in the heart of the Castro, those two guys you saw in ImagiKnit no doubt were gay and definitely into purl1, knit2.

Alisha K. says:
I have been knitting and crocheting with my grandma for years. The good thing about it being so popular now is all the cool yarn. No more boring ugly acrylic! I also have to say that it is super hot when guys knit. I had two straight guys in my knitting group last year (they learned at Waldorf school as children) and it was very sexy to see them totally comfortable in a group of women knitters.

Jim L. says:
For the same reason they were joining book clubs last year and doing bikram yoga the year before that. Being trendy is the bottom line.
5/19/2006
Alisha K. says:
As far as I know, people are still doing bikram yoga and joining book clubs. Yes, knitting definitely is trendy...but it is not exactly a "fad". It sort has been going on since the 14th century.
5/19/2006
Cassio P. says:
The only way knitting can ever be sexy is if the girl is wearing a hat and a scarf and nothing else while she's doing it.
I'm don't know how a man knitting can possibly equate with sexy in a woman's mind. How about a man in a shawl painting your toenails? Does that stir up a bunch of lusty feelings too?
5/19/2006
Alisha K. says:
Not sure why I have to defend what I think is sexy, but here you go. There is something about a man that for one is artistic...cause yes crafting is creative and two is not afraid to do something that is consider "feminine". They are comfortable and confident and could care less what people think.

Vanessa G. says:
Scrapbooking is my craft. But I did make a quilt once.

CINDY K. says:
there was a commercial for I forget what a couple years back - maybe a search engine or something - where this total leathers and spikes biker dude was talking about how he'd found a knitting circle to his liking.
It was hilarious when they panned to him sitting w/a bunch of old grannies, working on their knitting and holding it up to each other to see...heee hee hee. It was cute.
5/19/2006
Cassio P. says:
Sorry Alisha, didn't mean to offend. You don't have to defend yourself. I just thought it was funny. I'm picturing a commercial for a brand of yarn showing hot women making bedroom eyes at a bunch of guys holding sweaters and stockings and crochet needles, looking all suave like they just created a masterpiece.
5/19/2006
Alisha K. says:
No offense taken Cassio P. It is a funny image, I agree...but stil sexy.

My friend Steph crotches really cool food scarves. Some of you might know her as Twinkie Chan. Her little hobby has lander her in Giant Robot, Glamour Italia, and a few other magazines. She's working on a distribution deal right now. She made me a taco salad scarf for my birthday but it's a little too girly for me to wear.

scrapbooking! damn i forgot about that one. add that in with bikram yoga, knitting and book clubs. oh, and 4-girl dinners a la "Sex and the City", but that one is losing steam cuz the show is done.
5/19/2006
CINDY K. says:
but 3 and 5 girl dinners are on the rise...watch out.
5/19/2006

someone please get rid of tevas altogether. please.

I'll admit, I sometimes knit. It's kinda neat to have the scarf around your neck be one that you hand-made.
12/22/2006
Tamara B. says:
Oh, shit. Is this the requirement to be a cool girl now? I have to muster up an interest in knitting and needlepoint and all manner of home economics? God no!

Must. Have. Bacon Scarf. (please be scented)
Cool girls knit because they're cool, literally. That stuff keeps you warm.
My wife is an amazing knitter. She made me a green basket-weave (seriously difficult) scarf I count as one of my most prized possessions. Most knitters I know find it relaxing and therapeutic. She generally has a couple projects going at a time - one with a simple stitch for relaxing and another or two complex ones to stimulate concentration.
Some schools even use it to introduce algebra at the 3rd/4th grade level.
12/23/2006
Nina A. says:
Wow...knitting at 21st amendment?? Was she sitting at the bar?? Or was she waiting to be seated or waiting for her food??
Anyhow...personally, I crochet. I've crocheted for so long that I can't get the hang of knitting. Though I do think it was odd that she might've been knitting at a bar/restaurant....I'd rather her knit than dig her nose or something. Whether it be crochet or knitting...it's seriously therapeutic. Try it sometime...though I recommend crochet :) I quilt as well but I don't think quilting in public is feasible...now that would've been really weird.

Knitting is really relaxing. And then you end up with a scarf! I would never bring it to a bar, though.

BECAUSE US COOL GIRLS HAVE PROBLEMS WITH NEEDING TO DO THINGS WITH OUR HANDS AND MOUTHS AT ALL TIMES, AND KNITTING IS BUT ONE THING THAT HELPS US RELAX FROM ALL OF THE FUCKING WEIRDO BULLSHIT WE HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IN THIS INSANE WORLD. PLUS, MITTENS RAWK!

I saw a woman knitting a pretty sweater at a Giants game....I'd have to say that's brilliant multitasking!
I need to get back into this b/c I have a box full of yarn and a rusty memory. I'm ready to get over my OD on scarves from the holidays.

I don't see what's so obnoxious about public knitting. It's a lot less so than 1 person taking over a table for 4 at Ritual with their laptop for 5 hours at a stretch.

Trumom R. says:
True. You can actually SOCIALIZE while knitting (unless, of course, it's a complex cabling pattern.) People with laptops are, well, so ANTI-SOCIAL...

Sharon "ask me about AVON" J. says:
I don't think Knitting is a trend, but certainly there have been peaks. Like 3-4 years ago it was all the craze, died down a bit, now it's up again.
I remember my knitting days. I would start knitting again if only I knew how to start. There's that lady in Union square in front of Old Nacy who sells her knitting. I like the flowers.
