I have to say they are all equally annoying and I think they have become more so as the seasons went on. I am watching reruns.
Carrie is very self-centered and thinks the world revolves around her.
Charolette can only talk about babies and marriage and is majorly prissy.
Miranda is frigid and I cringe when I have to see her eat anything onscreen because she talks with her mouth full and it always looks (and sounds) like she has a bag of marbles in her mouth.
Samantha-Actually compared to the other three she is quite tolerable.
So I guess the question could be..which sex in the city character is tolerable?

at first it was charlotte because she is so fucking one dimensionally stupid. but the longer I watched reruns, the more the carrie character bothered me. She is such a self centered its all about me bitch princess, I was glad guys dumped her. SJP was so convincing, I can't even stand seeing her face plastered about with her dumb ass perfume "Lovely"
I actually like the Samantha character because at least she came across as honest. Miranda...eh.

I didn't have a problem with Carrie, until I saw that skit on SNL with Christina Aguilera (who played Samantha to perfection).  I didn't realize Carrie made so many puns, until they made fun of her for it in that skit...now I can't watch the show without thinking of the excessive use of puns. I can't stand her because of it.  Thanks, SNL!

Carrie - as Peter said on Family Guy, it looks like a big foot.  She gets bonus points for narrating, which makes her all the more annoying.

Any single member of the cast of Grey's Anatomy tops the entire cast of SATS in annoying points anyday.  That show is like a 1 hour douche commercial.  I feel like I'm bleeding just thinking about it...

  15. 10/25/2006 Barb "Full Metal Blogger" B. says:

it bothered me they all ended up happily ever after...with another person ( a man in this case) to complete their lives. It would have been nice to see at least ONE of the characters be able to find happiness through something they do for themselves and empowerment through that! Bottom line, I felt the show was a sham for starting out with this story of women trying to be dating  "like a man" and being independent while dependent on each other, but then all they all wanted was to find happiness through someone else. The Samantha character seemed the best developed as far as she DID want to call her own shots but was surprised to find happiness with the man-stud.

Seems like they play "king of the hill" for most annoying. My knee-jerk reaction would be Charlotte...BUT Carrie takes the cake after sitting through the boxed-set. Her neurotics coupled with dramatics in EVERY LITTLE THING wore me down...& Mr. Big was a jerk.

charlotte. hate her "im so pristine i only wear burberry-go-to-prep-school and gold digged my way to an expensive apt" attitude

carrie's dumb random spats of freakout moments (like her breaking out in random rashes in a wedding gown store...uh...) were annoying as hell.  miranda is funny sometimes because shes so neurotic and sarcastic.  samantha is great but too over the top sometimes.

I think the show deteriorated after season 4. Seasons 1, 2 & 3 were of a much higher quality and not as much of a soap opera. Carrie's outfits were also not as stupid looking at the beginning, much more realistic for a woman who was supposed to be a freelance writer.

Aidan sucked and was never right for Carrie. She needed someone more cosmpolitan and intellectual, not simple minded Aidan.

But, anyway, to answer the original question...Carrie for sure. Hated the voiceovers, hated the puns, hated the self centredness, I always wanted them to show me more of the other girls' stories, which were frequently far more interesting.

Who sleeps with that many people?  I'd be exhausted if I had half as many lovers/fabulous parties/emotional trainwrecks as any of them.

Barb... interesting perspective. I actually think all of the characters found happiness in themselves and that is why their relationships worked out:

carrie: realized that sacrificing her own career/lifestyle for the russian would make her unhappy; it was only after she resolved to follow her dreams that she and mr. big reunited.

charlotte: after harry broke up with her the first time, she continued to practice judaism and live her life... that is when she and harry got back together

samantha: always relied on herself for her happiness, would never let a man determine that for her

miranda: realized it was not a weakness to have a husband/partner, balanced the role of wife/mother/career woman (very cool, imho)

Then,  I learned that in real life she is lesbian, so I guess that's where that angriness comes from.  Not a good actor, as she couldn't hide it.

Jill K, sometimes the narration IS good. But most of the times it succumbs to the inheirent flaw of any film or tv narration. It reminds you that you are watching film or tv, so you can't really lose yourself in it. So sometimes they're good, but most of the time they're pretty cringey. Don't get me wrong, I still had people over every Sunday to watch that show but...so many groans.

I recall that the S&TC online community referred to the voiceovers as, I kid you not, The Moment Of Shit.

maria d, you are so on top of this one. The first 3-4 seasons are the best. Aidan blows.

Does anyone remember the eps where her page rate or per-word rate were discussed? I remember watching one with a friend, a fairly successful freelancer and he went batshit. He was all, "Dude, Norman Mailer doesn't make that much per-word". Carrie was like the Single Girls Erma Bombeck but was higher-paid than say, Tom Robbins.

I second your call of bullshit.  Also, Carrie's alleged income versus her bling was always suspect.  First of all, New Yorkers spend such a monumental amount on their rent , so her affording her apartment was a bit of the stretch to begin with.  Add in the Manolos and the bling, plus all of that fur she was wearing in the early seasons?!?!

I was annoyed with Charlotte for most of the run of SATC, but I have to admit, I loved her relationship with Harry, and found her pretty much adorable after that.  Carrie just got more obnoxious, self-centered, and neurotic.

Carrie got increasingly annoying. And I admit the show got increasingly annoying to me as I watched reruns. I like something about all of the rest of the ladies but they have their annoying moments, too.

On televisionwithoutpity, the recapper always theorized that the writers hated Miranda, which is why they stuck her with the most embarassing story lines, like the whole Weight Watchers/Krispy Kreme thing & they also stuck her with a baby that she clearly didn't want. I was really looking forward to having a woman have an actual abortion on television, which is what the real Miranda would have done.

My biggest problem with the puns is that in the later seasons, the brunch sessions became more like contrived joke/pun sharing, at the beginning of the show, the conversations between the friends were much more realistic and flowed a lot better. And the narration always told us stuff we already know - I hate that!

    maria... good points!

one of my favorite lines in the whole show: "what man trades pussy for purim?" -- samantha at brunch (after charlotte tells the other women how harry won't get serious with her because she's not jewish)

come on, that is pure GOLD, people!

i still love this show, but the more i watch, the more i HATE carrie. she is the worst friend ever and so selfish.

someone was once summing up sarah jessica parker and it fit carrie perfectly too: she always tries to act like the everygirl, but just a little bit better than you!
