Andy F. says:
I keep reading that honey bees are on the verge of extinction..which will obviously create a domino effect, in turn killing humans.
so, what are you doing to save bee's and yourself?

Andy F. says:
sounds like a good start, Lance..
In all seriousness. This schtuff I've been reading has put the fear of God in me. Most articles read as doomsday-ish..Which, I guess is true..seeing as bees make fruits grow and those keep the Dr. away...
oh well..guess it's time to say goodbye to honey bees and polar bears.
it was nice knowin' you all!

Jade "Save the Humans" I. says:
exactly
Maybe we just don't need 10 varieties of Skittles, Triscuits or all the other varieties of stuff on the shelves. Perhaps if our consumption levels were put to a more even level than we can surivive on whatever # of bees there are left.
But lets be real:
No one is going to do anything about this till all the products we buy that are generated by a bees job are dissapearing off the shelves. Untill then we are going go on our happy way and consume, consume. So enjoy that you still live in the era that you can walk into a store and get anything your heart desires.

What kind of progress would result if SF'ans had a protest about the decline of bees?

Barb "ahhh....vacation" B. says:
I called the Smiling Bee guy (bee removal service) to come take the bees out of my kitchen wall instead of having an exterminator co. come out and gas them. He takes the bees back to his own orchard. According to bee groups, it is against the law to kill bees in California but I had 3 pest control companies say this is what they would do.
04/16/2008
Andy F. says:
I was only joshin' Jade..I'm sure as with most protest..it would fall on deaf ears or preachin' to the choir..
But, I totally agree with you..Although, now that we're all becoming aware of this impending doom...NO MORE BEE FOR YOU!
04/16/2008
Amy "Fig Plucking Ninja" R. says:
Erm...guys, this has nothing to do with eating honey.
Jade, that's a great point. It's 100% about saving ourselves. Life will continue on this planet (unless we blow it up) with or without us.
04/16/2008
Andy F. says:
No..it has everything to do with what those bees do for us...Poor things are fightin' a mighty, mighty virus..
Life will continue...with or without Yelp

Q - how did the Smiling Bee guy get the bees out of your house? Did he use a vacuum of some sort? Or did he smoke them out? Also, this may be a stupid question, but wouldn't the bees fly back (to your) home?
04/16/2008
Chris D. says:
raise awareness. are you guys aware yet?
04/16/2008
Barb "ahhh....vacation" B. says:
He brought several boxes for the bees and set them near the entry point of their hive in my wall. Eventually, they made a home in the boxes. I think some of them had a queen inside so the workers would want to establish a hive for her. Eventually, the queen in our kitchen wall would leave to find a box to roost to make a new hive. It took about 2-3 weeks. It was quite a process. He had to smoke the last few out and vacumed the last few and carefully got those and put them in the box. He had to break the wall and take the honeycombs out. Without the bees to cool the honey with their wing vibrations, the honey drips out and will cause mold and rot in the drywall. Then it attracts rodents. We had to cover the wall immediatley in case some workers out gathering pollen would come back. He left a box for them.

Anna D. says:
My dog snaps at bees while they're flying and then he gobbles them up.
I guess I'll teach him to stop.

that is quite a process..my goodness..well, good for you for doing your part...

Last year I planted four lavender plants because I read that bees like them and they're thriving. The plants, not the bees. I use no pesticides or other sprays in my yard. I'm adding more California native plants. There was an interesting article in the Chronicle today about bees and farm subsidies and politics:

Zeke "Easier to Keel the second time" S. says:
interesting read on wikipedia. I guess its mostly honey bees and not effecting the other bees. Honey Bees are not native to the US and many ntive plants are polinated mostly by native bees and will not be effected. The biggest hit is to mass scale factory farming of non native plant varieties...

Write your congressperson and oppose the outrageous farm bill which is nothing but welfare for wealthy farmers. It is very bad for the bees, not to mention our collective fat asses as it pumps more grains and corn and less fruits and veggies into our diets.

hire bzz bees (
http://www.bzzbees.com/) to do a live removal of bees -- they did an amazing job removing a nest of bumblebees from our back patio, including the queen, so the bees can go live a happy life somewhere that isn't next to our back door! pics here

Caroline B. says:
We planted a bunch of flowers that used to attract wild honeybees and bumblebees. Sadly, this year the honeybees have vanished. Also, we don't use pesticides and, fortunately, the landscapers here don't either. Other places I have lived used to spray the whole building exterior a few times a month.
Besides the virus and parasite theories, some scientists think that the beekeepers hauling their hives cross country from field to field for pollenation is exhausting the bees.
