Since I'm not exactly sure if the "what" is directed to my whole post or just a part of it....so to restate:

- I'm confused by the notion of pedantically correcting someone's spelling (Filipino or otherwise)

-I'm equally confused by the need to call out a person's misuse of a Filipino word or expression...if they are accidentally offensive, sure let them know, and if they're intentionally offensive, beat the shit out of them. But in most cases, as long as the content/meaning gets across, why not let it slide?

-As I understand things, the Filipino language is not set in stone. Sure I can understand the desire to undermine an oppressive colonial influence by using "our own" standards of language, but even modern Filipinos aren't dogmatic about keeping the language "pure". By "pure" I'd like to compare with say, the French, as an example who make a certain effort to insulate the language from exogenous influence.

All of the above are my thoughts under the assumption that the first post was a very serious one. The second part of my post is in there just in case there's an inside joke between you and Heidi, that I'm just not privy to.

Sorry AJ, I have to disagree. I guess I'm looking at it as a form of respect. If I'm learning English, I'd like to know the correct ways of spelling and saying things. Also, I agree that the Filipino language (as opposed to Tagalog) is evolving so fast, with exponentially increasing American influence and the development of text-speak, that Tagalog is literally being phased out of everyday vernacular. I'm very impressed with non-Filipinos who take the time to learn how to correctly say (syllables and tones) and correctly spell Tagalog words, because they took the time to learn and respect my language. I'm equally impressed with Fil-Ams who can understand the language, even if they can't speak it, but have a thirst to learn it as well.

If a non-Filipino is trying to learn the language, why not teach them the right way of saying it? Why?

Racism is fucking wack, and guess what, as part of an interracial couple I've experienced discrimination too. Case in point: me and my figga are in a lovely beach town, chilling in front of our B&B. Some older white couple is sitting there. One of them makes a comment ouf of the fucking blue to Glenn about eating dogs. We both were in shock and basically felt like the wind had been knocked out of us. Later I was so mad, I wanted to smash his fucking racist redneck fat face in....
If you see me with my friends, you would see every color of the rainbow. You would also see a bunch of snarky, un-PC aholes calling each other names that would probably bring this crew to our front doors with burning crosses.
It works both ways, people. I meant no harm, continue to mean no harm, but am fucking sick of being harmed by a bunch of bandwagon jumpers.
