I was out at Ocean Beach today and there was nothin' but blue sky, sea, and a clear shot to the Farralons!
It's a perfect day for a green flash at sunset!  No fog, no haze, just unobstructed horizon...

...DYL doesn't end 'til 9 and sunset is a before 8 :)

I'll be up at the Sunset Reservoir looking for the green flash. I don't think the air is steady enough, but it should be a gorgeous sunset regardless.

PS: After the sky darkens a bit, this is a good time to catch Mercury. A small telescope will show the crescent.

I forgot, binoculars will make it easier to find Mercury. But you can easily see the planet without them.

I've heard it said that only 1% of Americans have ever seen Mercury.

jeff... it has gotten a bit more breezier since 2pm, so you're probably right. but it's so nice out that it's worth a shot :)

If the green flash is elusive, it's often easier to catch in binoculars. But don't look too early or you'll see spots! Wait until there's just a small bit of sun left, just as in tiffinie's picture link.

I'm sure you saw a real green flash, tiffinie. So Cal gets very good inversion layers that can make for excellent green flashes. The best one I ever saw was near Santa Barbara.

Hanging out on the boardwalk (I used to live on Santa Barbara Pl in PB) with friends, drinking beer, with nothing better to do than watch a sunset every evening, those were some good old days.
