It is strange and a bit scary that there are some pictures that are considered so evil it's a crime to even look at them. I don't know the state of the law but the 2005 child porn bills even restricted access to those images for the defense team and jury. Law enforcement, prosecutors, and some software makers get to handle them for "research" and I'm sure there's a lot of gawking, joking, and pointing that goes on in those circles.
Anyway, even though there's a good (but not accepted) first amendment argument that people should be able to research whatever they want....I think everyone knows that you're not supposed to "research" child porn by looking at it, just like you don't research bombs by making them, airline security by trying to get a gun through the gate, police response by staging a fake bank robbery, etc.
