Well, look, everyone who gets caught has an excuse.  The harder it is to deny what you did, the more strained the excuse.

It is strange and a bit scary that there are some pictures that are considered so evil it's a crime to even look at them.  I don't know the state of the law but the 2005 child porn bills even restricted access to those images for the defense team and jury.  Law enforcement, prosecutors, and some software makers get to handle them for "research" and I'm sure there's a lot of gawking, joking, and pointing that goes on in those circles.

Anyway, even though there's a good (but not accepted) first amendment argument that people should be able to research whatever they want....I think everyone knows that you're not supposed to "research" child porn by looking at it, just like you don't research bombs by making them, airline security by trying to get a gun through the gate, police response by staging a fake bank robbery, etc.

Maybe he himself is in denial.  Most people looking at porn online are just curious, doing "research" you could call it.  So he might truly believe he was just investigating what this whole child porn thing was all about.  You know, Americans are so hypocritical about sex...and then thinking, wow, this is interesting research.  I'm not really hurting anybody because I didn't take the pictures, etc.  And as a talk radio guy he's used to playing god in his own little kingdom, getting away with breaking rules that other people can't break.  So he might actually believe he's innocent and got framed.

There are other videos and photos sent by Ward to  SexFairy that does not give the implication of writing a book on it.  He was lucky again to get off so easy.   The woman did not know the man was Bernie Ward until the Feds told her.

Pete Townshend didn't actually view or have any child porn images.  He was investigated because a porn site he joined had a child porn section, along with sections that were not child porn.  What he claimed is that he was doing research for his book by looking into porn.

Pete Townsends excuse worked for him. But now the courts have completely  rejected the 'im writing a book/doing research excuse. because everyone would use it as their defense. A defense attorney can no longer introduce it as a defense for the defendant.

I heard Brian Copeland on KGO this Sunday just roping Bernie Ward... he had debated him on the air, as Ward DEFENDED some PERVO who had a website devoted to ... where child molseters could go weatch 9-year-old girls!!! It was sick, how he defended the PERVO under "he has the right to Free Speech", "What laws has he broken", etc.

He played the whole exchange... weird.

Then Copeland let out that in 2000, or 2001, someone at the station (I think he said a woman) walked in on Ward, while on the air, lopping the mule.. walking the dog... or should I say, 'polishing the bishop'!!!

It wasn't reported due to his 'standing' at the station, but now they let it out of the bag since so  many ________ are defending him at KGO. Copeland wanted to set the record straight.
