i am thinking of taking some friends with me for my birthday to a hot springs. i'd prefer a low-budget, neo-hippie (well, environmental friendly) place than some luxury resort. i was looking at wilbur, harbin, and white sulfphur hot springs - does anyone know anything about these places/has anyone been there or do you recommend another place? thanks!

Harbin hot springs is really lovely, it's a series of mineral spring fed pools of various temperatures. You'll love it, as long as your down with lots of naked people sunning themselves on the redwood decks. there is an excellent hike on the way, just past Calistoga. The general store in Calistoga has excellent gourmet provisions to take up  for picnics on the grounds too.

i hear harbin is the "party" version of hot-springs...couples making out in the pool, a restaurant, a movie theater, etc. have been to wilbur several times...more a place to just...unwind...and chill...and heat up in the pools. it's the equivalent of a weekend-long massage...

Harbin is the best hot springs.  There is a "quiet rule" in most of the hot tubs and sauna - no talking.  But there is another pool where socializing is allowed.  They have a strict "no pick ups" rule too.  Fun to go with friends that you don't mind seeing you nekkid.

My cousin swears by Desert Hot Springs, a small town near Palm Springs. She says it's cheap and that it's so undeveloped and broke people call the town Desperate Hot Springs.

Orr Hot springs in Ukiah- have you looked into that already?
13201 Orr Springs Rd.

I was there once- it's pretty crunchy but it's definitely 'nature-loving' and there is a communal kitchen where you can cook your food (i think meat is frowned upon.)

Details at: http://www.andersonic....

You can sleep in tents on the campground portion of the springs, or rent out a cabin. The rates have changed since I was there 3-4 years ago, so better to call...

Have fun!

PS  - couples are not supposed to make out in the pools ... they frown on sexual activity in public areas, as it can make other guests uncomfy.  There are lots of private areas to make out if you feel the urge.

Harbin Springs: Dances on Thurs. nights, they use hydrogen peroxide instead of chlorine in the pools so that is a good thing. Meditation pool is my fav. No talking, no sex, no kissing...just physical closeness to your partner. Lots of naked people, community kitchen, massages and spa services....

Oh, and by crunchy I mean...  Orr Hot springs is 'clothing optional' so it's not surprising to see people in the hot springs with all their stuff showing. Or walking around on the property, for that matter.

I've heard the same thing about Harbin and used to know someone who got pregnant there. Um...in one of the pools. Hope that's not TMI.

Incidentally, I just reviewed their sister springs today. More out of the way, so not as crowded. http://www.yelp.com/bi...

I second Orr Hot Springs--beautiful place

Harbin has good baths, though...and it's not a "little" new age. It's alot new age. But you can just ignore that. Because they are new age they've got some of the best facilities without being a snobby expensive place. Their cold pool you can swim laps in after bathing in their very hot pool. (I love that!) and they don't use chlorine they have a powerful oxygen filter which is much healthier.
