Do you have Latitude?

Do you know where your Yelp friends are?

Google just made maps social by launching latitude for Google Maps.  http://google.com/lati...

An interesting addition to the venerable mapping and public transportation planner app.  Now, if it would just find the nearest 4+ star-rated burrito stand, it'd be perfect!

This is the worst idea ever. How in the world can I feign illness if my boss can see I am at the beach?

I think that the FBI and the CIA knowing where I'm at at all times is plenty, thank-you-very-much.

I heard something about Google Oceans which sounded cool. This other thing not so much.

I think this identifies a generation gap. I've noticed that many teenagers and early 20 somethings love this sharing of information while most people my age *ahem* over late 30's-ish, consider this an invasion privacy. I simply do not trust my information being stored in some sinister database or being put out there for anybody to see.

This is like those boostmobile commercials..."Where you at?"

  5. 2/4/2009 Kevin "Double Oh Yelp" N. says:

@Drue actually, it's perfect for that.  The app has three settings: no location sharing, manual sharing, and auto sharing.  If you manually set it to your house, then head to the beach, it will look like you're stuck at home all day!

I think LBS things are pretty darn cool, and it's something Yelp could really benefit from.

I see the privacy issues, but really, it is only to manually-specified friends, can be turned on and off (or even create fictitious data) making the privacy issues pretty low.  Much lower than, say, writing hundreds of reviews and talk threads on a popular publicly-accessible website.

Maybe I'm just 20 years old at heart.  Yeah, I'll go with that one.

How funny, I did some beta testing for this and I was wondering what would come of it. Not my cup of tea, but perfect for stalkers.

I'm surprised more yelpers aren't using this. You can become invisible at will and lie about your location, so what's the big deal?

I do have Latitude and love it. Most of my friends are paranoid and "creeped out" by it though so I haven't found locals with which it would actually be useful.

Mine doesn't use the GPS feature. It uses the less accurate non-GPS technology which can only place me within a few blocks of my actual location. Uses less battery power that way too.

99% of the time I don't really care if people know my approximate whereabouts. If I happen to pay a visit to my favorite crack den whorehouse, I'll just turn it off.

  11. 2/16/2009 Kevin "Double Oh Yelp" N. says:

Better than turning it off:  just set it somewhere benign.  You go to a crack den, make it look like you're at Church.  You go to see your mistress, make it look like you're at a jewelry store.  Playing hookie from work; set it to your house so you look like you're home sick rather than at the bar at 2pm.

Honestly I didn't care (i am along the lines of thinking privacy is gone anyway.. live transparently)....

but the idea of not knowing where your friends are, but being able to meet up with them is cool.  Think of trying to find friends at Bay to Breakers, and not needing to call or anything.  They say, "meet up with us when you are ready."

    So you do.  Cool.

Not sure what the "privacy" complaint is about anyway. Your cellphone company already has the ability to track your location, both in real-time and in the past. So does the government. If someone's really that freaked out about "privacy" they shouldn't be carrying a cellphone, using the Internet, registering to vote or paying taxes.

Here privacy is different.  The cell company only has authorization, that you approve, to track for 911 and emergency services.  Trust me... if you don't pay taxes, they will be more inclined to find you than if you don't.  Probably more private to actually pay up.  =)  Then they may leave you alone.

It does sound like you saw Eagle Eye tho.
